40917 2025 TV Episode Spell Out #2 - Only Murders in the Building
Duration: Aug 01, 2025 - Jan 31, 2026

For this round, we are going to spell out episodes from Only Murders in the Building, an American mystery/comedy/drama television series. The show focuses on a trio of strangers with a shared interest in true crime podcasts, who become friends while investigating a succession of suspicious murders in the Arconia, their upscale apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side, and producing their own podcast about the cases, titled Only Murders in the Building. It's first season premiered on Hulu in August 2021 and is currently renewed for a fifth season.

This is a spell-out challenge. This is a six-month challenge, so please choose enough phrases to give you a minimum of 30 books, and any phrase you start should be completed, even if it puts you over the 30-book minimum.

We're going to keep the same twist that the first 2025 TV spell-out had, as this show has relatively few episodes per season as well. To participate, you must pick a title from each season. If that doesn't get you to 30 books, you may pick titles from whichever season you like until you make up 30 books.

CHALLENGE RULES - PLEASE READ!
See this thread for more detailed rules for CCC challenges.

❖ If you want to participate in a challenge, sign up by posting at least a partial list of the challenge requirements. This gives us a post to link you to, which you can use to update your books as the challenge progresses.

❖ Books must be at least 150 pages long (unless they are graphic novels, see below) and may only be used for one task in this challenge, but cross-challenge posting is encouraged.

❖ Graphic novels must be at least 300 pages long, but two books can be combined to make up the page count as long as they both meet the same criteria.

❖ For author's initials,
-In the case of a hyphenated first or last name (i.e. Sarah-Kate Lynch, Kate Dyer-Seeley), the first letter of the hyphenated name may be used (not the second initial directly following the hyphen).
-If an author uses what appears to be "two last names" (usually a female author using her maiden name and then her married last name; i.e. Kathy Hogan Trocheck), the last initial of the two names counts since the maiden name is now serving in the place of a "middle" name.

❖ For each book you read, please post a link to the title and mention the author and the date you finished reading it.*

❖ If you want the challenge moderator to verify those books as you post them, please copy/paste your update into a new message. If you do this while you still have the Edit window open, it will copy all of your formatting, etc. too. It will make it easier on the moderators if we won't have to scroll back through the entire thread looking for "message #15," or to follow links back to an original post.

❖ When you complete the challenge, please post your entire list as a new message to make it easier for everyone to see what you’ve read :) If you don’t repost your list, your name will not be added to the list of those who have completed the challenge.

Rereads are allowed, as long as you read the entire book and not just skim the best portions! :)

* If you don’t know how to post a link to the book title, cover or author, see the instructions HERE.

To finish, you will have to complete a total of six tasks, choosing at least four of the tasks from the Trivia section of the challenge. You do not have to choose the tasks beforehand; you can fill in as you go. You may choose to do all 10 tasks if you wish also. Happy reading!

ANGOLA
A country on the west-central coast of Southern Africa, it is the second-largest Portuguese-speaking (Lusophone) country in both total area and population.
🚩Read a book whose title starts with a letter in ANGOLA (ignore A, An and The or equivalent if not English).

Stats

- Capital: Luanda
🚩Read a book whose author's first and last initials are in the word LUANDA (letters can only be used as many times as they appear in the word).

- Population: 37,290,193 (2023 estimate)
🚩Read a book whose total number of pages contain at least 2 of the numbers in the population (tell us the page count).

- Area: 481,400 sq mi
🚩Read a book whose year it was first published has at least 2 of the numbers in the area (tell us the year published).

Trivia

1. Once home to a prosperous fishing village, housing a school, hospital, airstrip and chapel, Ilha dos Tigres (Tiger Island) is now nothing but ruins. It was established in 1860s by fishermen from Portugal and lasted for a century, with its last inhabitants relocating in the 1970s. Over the years, Ilha dos Tigres has been periodically linked to the mainland, then back into an island, based on tidal currents. It has been in its current island state in the 1960s, when a large storm came through the area and caused its inhabitants to relocate.
🚩Read a book either first published or set during the 1970s (tell us which year your book is set or published) -or- read a book in which a natural disaster occurs (tell us what).

2. The Mwila or Mumuhuila are a semi-nomadic ethnic group living in the Huila province of Southern Angola. They are mainly subsistence farmers, growing maize and other crops, raising fowls, cattle and goats. The women of the Mwila tribe have ornate hairstyles – they use a red stone, oil, butter, tree bark, herbs and sometimes cow dung to make a paste for their hair. They use headrests to protect their hairstyles. They also wear brightly colored necklaces to represent various stages of their lives – once they wear it, they never take it off for the rest of their lives.
🚩Read a book whose cover shows a woman’s hair prominently (post the cover) -or- read a book that covers various periods of a character’s life (tell us who, if it’s not the MC).

3. The Iron Palace is a historical building in Luanda, believed to have been designed and built by Gustave Eiffel, of the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty fame. The history of the building is a bit of a mystery, no official record of it exists. It was pre-built probably in France in the 1890s and was destined to go to Madagascar (probably). What is certain is that the ship carrying it ran aground on Angola’s Skeleton Coast and the Portuguese rulers of the colony claimed the ship and its contents, including the palace. During Portuguese rule, the building functioned as an arts center. During Angola’s civil war years, it fell into neglect. It has been revived since then, but its use is still uncertain – it may be used in the future to house a diamond museum or a restaurant.
🚩Read a book whose cover shows a very recognizable piece of architecture (post the cover) -or- read a book whose main character works at a museum or a restaurant (tell us where).

4. About 30min north of Luanda, is a barren beach with a strange sight – as many as 50 rusting ships on or near the shore. The beach is officially the SaoTiago Beach, but locals call it Cemiterio de Navios or the ship cemetery. There are a few different stories about the background of the ship cemetery. Some say that it was initially used to offload cargo, but it wasn’t an ideal port – many ships blew or washed aground during storms or heavy seas. When the Port of Luanda was built, the ships that had run aground were abandoned. Some say that it was always meant to be a cemetery for ships, with damaged and derelict ships towed to the spot and left to rust away.
🚩Read a book with something rusty or abandoned looking on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book that has been lying around on your TBR from the year you’ve joined Goodreads (tell us when you added the book).

5. The national tree of Angola is the Imbondeiro or the African Baobab. According to legend, the Imbondeiro tree was the first tree ever planted. But after it grumbled about the majesty of other trees nearby, the gods picked it up and planted it upside down to quieten its muttering.
🚩Read a book with a tree prominently shown on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book with a major word in the title beginning and ending with the same letter (like Baobab).

6. About 25 miles outside Angola’s capital city of Luanda, erosion from wind and rain for thousands of years has carved canyons and ridges out of weathered rock. This is Miradouro da Lua, Portuguese for Viewpoint of the Moon. The rock formations are called the karst landscape, which forms from slowly dissolving limestone and other semi-soluble rocks.
🚩Read a book in which the author or main character has a name that means the moon or moonlight (see note; tell us the name if it’s the main character) -or- read a book whose cover shows the moon prominently (post the cover).
Note: You may use this list for moony names: https://creativenomenclature.com/baby... There are a few names here that mean clouds or something unrelated to the moon, ignore those.

Completed: 0/7+

At least 4 need to be added to TBR before Jan 1, 2025.

1. Paper/Documents/Bills that I've hung on to for years because maybe it's important? Yeah, no. In the shredder they go.
🗑️Read a book with paper of some kind on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a physical book.

2. Those knickknacks I bought years ago because they were cute and were on sale but they don't fit anywhere in my home, so I stuffed them in a closet just in case I felt moved to change my decor.
🗑️Read a book with the inside of a residential house on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book that you picked mainly because of the cover (post the cover).

3. Expired medicines that I didn't use and didn't throw because for one thing what if I felt sick enough to need them one day and another, because I didn't know how to safely get rid of them. (Turns out flushing is better than tossing some meds in the trash, and in any case, there are places near me that take unused or expired medicines).
🗑️Read a book in which someone is sick enough to need medication (tell us who) -or- read a book in which a character doesn't do something because it might be unsafe (tell us how your book fits).

4. My old clothes that stopped fitting me years ago, but I hung onto because they were cute and what if I accidentally did manage to fit into them again?
🗑️Read a book with unworn clothes shown on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book whose protagonist works with clothes in some way (tell us what they do).

5. An ice cream maker that I bought when I also bought an ice cream making book, both of which I used twice and never again. I'm keeping the book though, because it's a book and it looks pretty.
🗑️Read a book with a dessert shown on the cover (bonus for ice cream, post the cover) -or- reread a book.

6. So many plates and mugs that I've hung onto in case I need them when hosting friends but the only time I remember they exist is when my younger cat gets in the cabinet and knocks something over.
🗑️Read a book in which the main character entertains and feeds guests -or- read a book with a cat on the cover (bonus for a tuxedo cat, post the cover).

7. The drawer full of mystery cables that go with something, but I have no idea what - I'm fairly certain I'm going to regret this one, I'll need one of these very soon.
🗑️Read a book marked Mystery on the main page -or- read a book in which a character makes a decision that they come to regret (tell us how the book fits, use spoilers if needed).

8. Some of my old yarn, crochet hooks and macrame tools because I would have used them by now if I wanted to, wouldn't I?
🗑️Read a book in which the main character has a hobby (tell us what their hobby is) -or- read a book with yarn or rope on the cover (post the cover).

9. A drawer full of user's manuals - some of the gadgets themselves I no longer own. This was the easiest toss and made me feel quite accomplished.
🗑️Read a book that's easy to read (tell us why) -or- read a nonfiction science book.

10. My son's art from when he was little - I'm sentimental, but I really don't need a paper that has a single line on it, right? (I confess, I packed them all in boxes and put them in the garage to deal with some other day).
🗑️Read a book with something that seems to belong to a child on the cover (a toy, a small shirt, a cradle all work, post the cover) -or- read a book that tugs at your heart.

40917 August 2025 Scavenger Challenge - Summer Cleaning
Duration: Aug 01, 2025 - Aug 31, 2025

I missed spring cleaning this year because I had a few other things going on which made me feel overwhelmed at the thought of deep cleaning my house - it's daunting as it is. But I thought I could tackle it during summer considering it's too hot to go out anyway. I've been sorting and tossing out things I should have thrown/donated/sold years ago, and thought I'd put a challenge together so I can toss some stuff out of my TBR too.

There's a little twist in this challenge - out of the seven books you read for this, at least four have to be added to your TBR before the start of 2025. Do tell us when you added it.

Let's go!

Stuff I got rid of/intend to get rid of during my summer cleaning:

1. Paper/Documents/Bills that I've hung on to for years because maybe it's important? Yeah, no. In the shredder they go.
🗑️Read a book with paper of some kind on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a physical book.
