Honeybees

Duration: Nov 01, 2025 - Jan 31, 2026
Completed: 0/12

1. Honeybees are super-important pollinators for flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Bees transfer pollen between the male and female parts, allowing plants to grow seeds and fruit.
🐝 Read a book with flowers, fruits, or vegetables on the cover (yes, there needs to be more than one); post the cover OR a book with ADULT on the main GR genre page.

2. Honeybees live in colonies or beehives. The hive's members are divided into three types: the queen, the workers, and the drones.
🐝 Read a book from a trilogy; tell us the trilogy´s name OR a book with more than five of the same thing on the cover; post the cover

3. One queen runs the whole hive. Her job is to lay the eggs that will spawn the hive’s next generation of bees. The queen also produces chemicals that guide the behavior of the other bees.
🐝 Read a book with QUEEN in the title (plural accepted but no other variations) OR a book with a queen as a significant character; tell us her name.

4. The workers are all female. Their roles are to forage for food (pollen and nectar from flowers), build and protect the beehive, and clean and circulate air by beating their wings. Workers are the bees we see flying outside the hive.
🐝 Read a book by a female author AND with a female main character; post the link to the author’s GR page and tell us the name of the main character OR a book with wings shown prominently on the cover; post the cover.

5. The drones are the male bees. Their purpose is to mate with the queen. Several hundred live in each beehive during the spring and summer. In winter, when the hive goes into survival mode, the drones are kicked out.
🐝 Read a book by a male author AND with a male main character; post the link to the author’s GR page and tell us the name of the main character OR a book set in summer or spring.

6. Bees produce honey as food stores for the beehive during winter. The workers produce 2-3 times more honey than they need, so we get to enjoy the tasty treat, too.
🐝 Read a sweet book; briefly explain OR a book with a sweet food of some sort shown prominently on the cover; post the cover.

7. If the queen bee dies, workers will create a new queen by selecting a young larva (a newly hatched baby) and feeding it a special food called “royal jelly.“ This enables the larva to develop into a fertile queen.
🐝Read a book where a speaking character dies; tells us who OR a book where the main character has a baby.

8. Honey bees fly at a speed of around 25km per hour and beat their wings 200 times per second!
🐝 Read a book with more than 200 pages; tell us the page count, OR a book set in winter.

9. Each bee has 170 odorant receptors, which means they have a great sense of smell! They use it to communicate within the beehive and to recognize different types of flowers when looking for food.
🐝 Read a book with two of these numbers in the year of publication: 1, 7, 0; tell us the year OR a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in ODORANT RECEPTORS; post a link to the author's GR page

10. The average worker bee lives for just five to six weeks. During her life, she’ll produce around a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey.
🐝 Read a book whose title begins with a letter in TEASPOON (disregard A, An and The) OR read the twelfth book in a series, tell us the series name.

11. The queen can live up to five years. In the summer months, she can lay up to 2,500 eggs a day!
🐝 Read a book first published within the last five years (after 2020); tell us the publication date OR a book with more than 2,500 ratings; tell us how many ratings.

12. Over the past 15 years, colonies of bees have been disappearing, and the reason remains unknown. Referred to as colony collapse disorder, billions of honeybees across the world are leaving their hives, never to return. In some regions, up to 90% of bees have disappeared!
🐝 Read a book where a character disappears; tell us who OR a book you think is among your top 10% favorite books.

Trivia

1. A total solar eclipse occurred at the Moon's descending node of orbit on Thursday, May 29, 1919. This specific total solar eclipse was significant because it helped prove Einstein's theory of relativity. The eclipse was the subject of the Eddington experiment: two groups of British astronomers went to Brazil and to Principe to take pictures of stars in the sky when the moon covered the sun and darkness was revealed. These photos helped prove that the sun interferes with the bend of starlight. The expedition to Principe was led by Sir Arthur Eddington.
🚩Read a nonfiction science book -or- read a book whose cover shows stars in a night sky (post the cover).

2. The Pico Cao Grande (Portuguese for "Great Dog Peak") is a towering needle-shaped volcanic plug peak. Its summit is 2,175 ft above sea level and is often shrouded in cloud. The volcanic plug was formed by magma solidifying in the vent of an active volcano. The plug is a recent phenomenon, having formed as part of the Cameroon line of volcanoes roughly three and a half million years ago in the Pliocene.
🚩Read a book with a needle shaped object on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a half-step book (>100 pages, or as many half-step books as needed to make up the page count; tell us the series).

3. Sao Tome and Principe were uninhabited when they were discovered by Portuguese explorers around 1470. The Portuguese colonized Sao Tome during the 16th century. They imported slaves to work on sugar plantations and the island became a staging post for the Atlantic slave trade. During the 1800s, cocoa was introduced to the islands and by 1908, Sao Tome and Principe had become the world’s largest producer of cocoa.
🚩Read a fiction book with dessert recipes in it (tell us the name of at least one recipe) -or- read a book in which slavery exists (it could be real life or not).

4. The annual Auto de Floripes held every August 10 is one of the most beloved cultural attractions of Principe. This is street theater which involves the entire population of Principe (around 5000 people) in a reenactment of the battle between Christians and the Moors. The story centers on the attempt by the Christians to recover the holy relics stolen by the Moors who demand that Emperor Charlemagne pays homage to the local gods or hang from a tower. Everyone in town is assigned a character and dresses up accordingly. The whole drama is enacted over a period of three days.
🚩Read a book in which something valuable is stolen (tell us what, use spoilers if needed) -or- read a play (shorter books less than 100 pages are fine for this option).

5. Leve Leve is a lifestyle, a mantra that the Sao Tomeans subscribe to, which translates to light in Portuguese. It is used as a warm greeting, and it is meant to act as a reminder to approach things with a lightness – take it easy, so to speak.
🚩Read a book that is light either in subject matter or the number of pages (if using number of pages, tell us the page count) -or- read a book with a carefree, happy go lucky character (tell us who).

6. When walking through Obo National Park, visitors may spot more than 900 species of plants, 100 of which can only be found in São Tomé and Príncipe. The most beautiful of these may be the orchids, the majority of which can be found growing on trees. The park is also home to a rare variety of begonia which grows to be 10 ft tall. Some animals in the park, like the Sao Tome olive pigeon and the giant sunbird, are examples of something called island gigantism, where animals on the island resemble those on the mainland, but are much larger. The reverse, called island dwarfism, is also seen – the Sao Tome ibis is much smaller than its relatives on the mainland.
🚩Read a book with a flower name intact and standing alone in the title or the author’s name (plurals okay, no other variation) -or- read a book whose page count is at least 150 pages higher than the average of the last 10 books you read (tell the average page count and that of the larger book).

CHALLENGE RULES - PLEASE READ!
See this thread for more detailed rules for CCC challenges.

❖ If you want to participate in a challenge, sign up by posting at least a partial list of the challenge requirements. This gives us a post to link you to, which you can use to update your books as the challenge progresses.

❖ Books must be at least 150 pages long (unless they are graphic novels, see below) and may only be used for one task in this challenge, but cross-challenge posting is encouraged.

❖ Graphic novels must be at least 300 pages long, but two books can be combined to make up the page count as long as they both meet the same criteria.

❖ For each book you read, please post a link to the title and mention the author and the date you finished reading it. If a challenge task gives several options, make it clear which option you’ve chosen. If the task calls for an item/color on the cover, include a link to the book cover.* If it’s not obvious from the book title or cover, be sure to explain how your book fits the task. If you don’t, you won’t get credit for completing that task.

❖ DNFs do not count for this challenge!

❖ If you want the challenge moderator to verify those books as you post them, please copy/paste your update into a new message. If you do this while you still have the Edit window open, it will copy all of your formatting, etc. too. It will make it easier on the moderators if we won't have to scroll back through the entire thread looking for "message #15," or to follow links back to an original post.

❖ When you complete the challenge, please post your entire list as a new message to make it easier for everyone to see what you’ve read :) If you don’t repost your list, your name will not be added to the list of those who have completed the challenge.

Rereads are allowed, as long as you read the entire book and not just skim the best portions! :)

* If you don’t know how to post a link to the book title, cover or author, see the instructions HERE.
