We people are hilarious! Thanks for joining, new peoples. Look forward to talking with you about stuff.
What confuses me is that a lot of the people who are the most angry at my reviews try to make the argument that books are 'just entertainment'. If they really thought that, why argue about them? When pursuing the great path of doucheness, at a certain level of accomplishment, it's impossible to not react douchily to everything you encounter. In a knee-jerk fashion that might lead to contradictory debating points.

I've been wanting to do this, but I'm too overwhelmed by the prospect of trying to pick reviews. Just trying to decide my favorite review by Aerin sounds very difficult..or Ceridwen, Elizabeth, Brian, a dozen others. Then, choosing from THOSE would be even harder. Ugh. I may try it sometime, but I'm not ready yet.

good point; I'd prefer the notdog contest.

A non-masturbation contest? That sounds about as much fun as a hot dog NOT eating contest. Where you just sit there and don't eat hot dogs. Or soy dogs, or whatever.
Masturbation is a hard habit to break. Why would one break that habit?

From my experience with vegetarian meat, Boca burgers have nearly no flavor, but a pleasant, fleshy texture. That's the only contribution I can make to this discussion, because I'm still eating meat. It's a hard habit to break, but I've cut down substantially.
can you guys share it?
and can one of you explain it to me?VirJohn was the contracted nickname of Virgin John, who earned said nickname in Christie's thread above, and Ceridwen's Ulysses thread. He was a fun guy. Ah, memories.
We're living side-by-side in peace nowAre you and John friends, Eh? You're like the Boddhisatva of Goodreads. You're as forgiving as Gandhi.
Oh, the nunchuk video was hilarious! It made me laugh so hard I cried.

To the stockades with both of ye!

This thread has so many funny moments that it needs its own greatest hits package, but that ninja VirJohn video was simply wow. My face and stomach hurt now I was laughing so hard.
---From Ceridwen's Ulysses thread.
It was such an obvious nickname, it's possible we both came up with it in separate places. I'm pretty sure this was the first post in the Ulysses thread to use it.
(P.S. I invented that play on his name and people've been using it without fully accrediting its cleverness to me. Betta recognize.)I disagree...I thought I invented it. I'll check the post where I first used it...be right back with the time and date.
oh my God, i wish i could read that one right now!Actually, it was copied into one of Jasmine's posts..that comment is still there!

I feel you usually explain your ideas clearly, Keely, and I don't think there's only one way to interpret any work of art. As Frank Zappa said, "If it sounds GOOD to you, it's bitchin'; if it sounds BAD to YOU, it's shitty." I rarely feel like getting agressive about books...unless someone starts trolling me. But I don't get nearly enough of those...I should probably study your reviews so I can attract more. I have a lot of fun with 'em when they show up.

I've disagreed with a couple of people about books and politics. But, if anyone has held a grudge...uhh, other than this
John guy some of you might remember, who has blocked me from even reading his reviews. (If you scroll down in this review a bit, you'll see why he hates me.) If I have any other enemies, I don't know about them.

I've consistently liked your reviews a lot, Keely. I think I even name-dropped you in one or two of them. I'm sure I did in my review of The Gutenberg Elegies.
Although I have thought about contesting your views of A Game of Thrones...

Although I'm all about anarchy and confusion, I'm also all about ruling over the serfs with an iron fist.
It's much harder to do that after throwing yourself out of power.

Crap, I was hoping I could finish my non-review before it was discovered by anyone but Kelly. I guess I should be faster about doing these things...Glad you liked it!

Caris has a tendency of doing that when he joins groups. So far, I'm not especially sure WHAT he has enforced, although he HAS threatened to throw me out of my own group. The power has gone to his head very quickly, I guess.

Van Morrison name drops like a motherfucker.
In "Summertime in England," he name drops Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake and T.S. Eliot.
He name drops Kerouac, including a couple specific books (Dharma Bums and On the Road) in "Cleaning Windows."
And he has songs that heavily name-drop other authors: "Tore Down a la Rimbaud" (Arthur Rimbaud), "Rave On, John Donne," (Which is actually a song completely about Donne) and probably 100 others I'm not thinking of. He's a name-dropping fool.

I'm not aware of that connection, Brian, but I've discovered recently there's a whole genre of music that has developed out of the steampunk lit genre. I don't know how I feel about this...yes I do. I think it's perty dorky.
Led Zeppelin have a lot of songs that incorporate Tolkien characters..."Ramble On," "Misty Mountain Hop," and I'm pretty sure there are others.
I'm sure I'll think of more...of course, "White Rabbit" by Jefferson's Airplane is a terrific Alice in Wonderland song.
