It had been so long since I'd eaten anything that the pain was unbearable and the growling from my stomach was so loud that I was sure the picnickers could hear it.

I waited patiently, watching as families gathered their trash and tossed it in the garbage cans. When they were far enough away, I quickly retrieved their castoffs and searched for something edible. I looked right and left, hoping no one had noticed my scavenging and almost cried tears of joy when I found a peanut butter sandwich with only a child sized nibble taken out of it.

I was just about to take a bite when I heard a familiar voice saying, "You know, Casandra, your family has been looking for you for months. Maybe you should consider coming home. The company might not be the best, but the food..." he trailed off.

I stood staring down at the smushed up bread in my hands and wanted to weep. I'd left for a reason, and knowing what he knew, how could he ever think I'd want to go back there?

"I know what it was life for you, Cassie," he whispered. "I told them I'd find you, but I didn't promise I'd bring you home. Let me take you to Phoenix. If we leave now, we can be there by morning and you'll be safe. You know I'll protect you."

I chewed at my bottom lip, nervous. Yes, Christian would protect me, but why? What would be in it for him? I cast him a sideways glance and made my decision. Tossing the sandwich in the trash, I turned to him.

"Yes, Christian. I'll go with you." I just hoped I wouldn't live to regret it.

Kristen Ashley has become another favorite author of mine. Her writing style is completely different from Pamela Clare's but they both know how to tell a fabulous story!
