This counts for the task, but because the MPE has 96 pages, it does not qualify for combo points.

Will short stories published as a collection posthumously count toward the 20 books? I can see 2 sides to this.

We will accept one collection of posthumously published short stories as a book. If an author's stories are collected multiple times posthumously, it still only counts as one book.

EDIT: I could also ask about translations, too, where the ..."

Books where the author is the translator do not count for this task. Only original works.

36119 For this task, it'll only be considered YA if Brooklyn Public Library has it listed as YA. So if it's a foreign language graphic novel that BPL doesn't carry, we won't class it as YA for this task.

Polls will close Nov. 30. It does not currently look like "make money" is going to win, but if there's a turnaround and it does, silver will be fine.

36119 Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "To understand this fully, can the women talk about a man in other than a romantic way? I will probably use this only for combo, but I'm wondering if they can say a man is a good father, or lawyer, ..."

Generally, no, there has to be a conversation that is not about a man. But in the case of a murder suspect, that might qualify if the conversation is really about solving the murder or what the next steps are or something similar.

The point here is to look at whether women are portrayed only for their relationship to men or whether they are given inner lives that don't revolve around the men around them. So if two women are talking just about their male boss, it won't work. But if they are talking more broadly about work/work conditions, that can pass.

For example:
Woman 1: "The boss is such a jerk."
Woman 2: "Yeah, and I hate the stupid ties he wears."
Woman 1: "Not to mention his ratty shoes."
-->FAIL - they're talking about a man

Woman 1: "The boss is such a jerk."
Woman 2: "We've really been putting in a lot of hours lately, and no one seems to notice."
Woman 1: "Yeah, maybe we should just start leaving at 5pm on the dot every day and see what happens."
-->PASS - they're talking about work

Woman 1: "I think this serial killer is a man."
Woman 2: "Yeah, statistically speaking, they usually are."
Woman 1: "Well, I guess we should pull the list of suspects from the computer database."
-->PASS - they're talking about solving the crime

Does that help?

36119 Yes, we will also accept graphic non-fiction or memoirs.
Nov 22, 2024 11:16AM

36119 The lexile rule will apply. If you read a YA graphic novel without a lexile, then it won't qualify for style points. If you read an adult genre graphic novel, the rule about graphic novels will not apply and you can get style points for combos, non-western, aged, oldies, and jumbo.

Note that if you post a graphic novel to a task other than 20.7, it will not qualify for style points.
