36119 Summer Finisher Awards

1. 10-point task creation -- the top three readers for the Summer 2021 Challenge, as determined by overall points, will each get to create a 10-point task for the Fall 2021 Challenge. (We will use the top 3 finishers who are not already creating a task for the Fall season).

2. Random -- All participants (except mods) who claim at least five books during the Summer 2021 season will be automatically entered into a drawing for a $25 US Amazon gift card to be awarded at the beginning of the Fall 2021 season. As this will repeat from season to season, the winner will not have won the drawing in either of the two previous seasons.

* although participants may be eligible for multiple rewards, only one will be granted per challenge. (Random excepted)

* Participants that create tasks for three consecutive challenges are ineligible for a task-creation reward on the fourth. Instead, the member will be asked to submit a group read book. Eligibility is reinstated on the following challenge.

36119 20.1-20.10 Riding the Metro

Read 10 books set at least 75% in 10 different real cities. "City" is defined as at least 100,000 population as per most recent published data. For very large cities, the book may include the greater metropolitan area. If a small country has no city of that size population, then the largest city in that country.

For this challenge only: We will consider England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland to be different countries rather than just the UK; the boundaries for North America are changed to include only the United States and Canada while Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean will count as part of South America. And an added note: Russia counts as either Europe or Asia, Egypt counts as either Africa or Asia, and Turkey counts as either Europe or Asia as these countries straddle a continental boundary.

There is no set itinerary to follow - books may be read in any order.

Scoring:
20.1-20.5: 20 points
20.6-20.9: 25 points
20.10: 35 points

Bonuses:
100 points finisher bonus
50 points for reading cities in 10 different countries
50 points for reading cities on 3 or 4 continents
100 points for reading cities on at least 5 continents

Repeats
Riding the Metro may be repeated three times.

***5/19 Edited to reflect the addition of Turkey as a multiple continent country.

36119 15.1-15.10 Ten Degrees of Separation (TDoS): Read a chain of ten books chosen from the 5-star reads of ten different RwS members.

First, select a RwS member and read one of their 5-star books. For your second book, find another RwS member that has also given the first book 5-stars and read one of their 5-star books. For the third book, find a RwS member that has also given your second book 5-stars and read one of their 5-star books, like so:

15.1 -- Bleak House, rated 5-stars by Elizabeth (Alaska) and Anika
15.2 -- The Elegance of the Hedgehog, rated 5-stars by Anika and Jennifer N
15.3 -- The Grapes of Wrath, rated 5-stars by Jennifer N and Deedee
15.4 -- Tobacco Road, rated 5-stars by Deedee and Rebekah
15.5 -- The Godfather, rated 5-stars by Rebekah and Caroline.....

Hint: There is a quick way to search for member's 5-star reads. Click on the RwS "Bookshelf" link on the top right. On the top left below the RwS photo icon, enter a book title in the search box. On the results page click on the "view group reviews »»" link. An example..

Scoring:
15.1 - 1st book = 15 points
15.2-4 - 2nd, 3rd, 4th books = 20 points
15.5-7 - 5th, 6th, 7th books = 30 points
15.8-15.10 - 8th, 9th, 10th books = 45 points.

Completion bonus: 100 points.

Repeats
TDoS may be repeated three times during the season. While members may not be used more than once in a single chain, you may revisit a member's shelf in subsequent repeats.

36119 Please be aware that short stories on Goodreads need to have been published separately from their magazine/journal or anthology. You may find stories added here that do not belong, and those may be deleted at some unknown future date. To be sure your reading for 10.1 will be on GR when you want to claim the task, we urge you to choose stories that have an ISBN or ASIN on the GR record. If you have questions about a specific entry, please ask in this thread.

36119 Summer Styles

With the introduction of our all sub-challenge season, this is a much shorter list than other seasons.

1. Before 1996 (5 points): Read a book originally published in 1996 or earlier.

2. Review (5 points): Share your thoughts about what you are reading. Post a 50 word or better review to let us know the good, the bad, and the ugly.

For this summer season, we will be suspending our lexile rules. Now is the time to dust off those titles that have not made the cut in previous seasons and get them read!
