Chapters 31 - end
29. Vin yells at Kell that he is “no skaa” he’s “just noblemen without titles”. I think there is some truth in it. Kell or was it Marsh - at least one of them - explained somewhere in the book that their mother was quite clever disguising herself as a mistress, a low born noblewoman, so that her half-breed children where raised among the noble… So Kell actually never lived the life of a normal skaa. Still there is his time as a thief and his time in the pits. They might have given him insight and changed him… still do you think Vin is right to tell him something like that?
I think it was good that she said those things. She needed to say it just to get it off her chest, and he needed to hear it too, because even though he spent time as a thief and in the pits he grew up not as a normal skaa but as a nobleman. I believe the life we live as a child and the things we experience then are what mainly shapes us as a person, so however much insight his experiences later in life gave him that's still not the same as growing up as a normal skaa.
30. Vin explains and shows Kell that she can pierce copperclouds. Something generations of Mistings and Mistborn have tried but never accomplished… Could this be the explanation why the Inquisitors are able to find Mistborn and is that really the reason the Lord Ruler thanked Mare, because she as a Tineye gave Kell, the Smoker and herself away? How can it be possible that this kind of power exist?
I believe that's a good explanation. I'm not sure exactly how it works, maybe it just has to do with strength... I'd love to learn more about it!
31. ”House Hasting is gone? Who will feed us?” - “So frightened”, Vin thought. “I was never like that…was I?”
This is one of the quotas on how much Vin actually changed during this book. There were always a lot of hints, like the dresses and opposing Kell and yeah, but this one actually reminded me of the Vin in the beginning, crouching, hiding and being afraid. And now - close to a year later - she can’t remember what it was like to be like this.
Not much of a question, but maybe a point to share thoughts on ;)
Vin does change a lot in a very short time. But I can imagine it's easy to get used to certain things - food on the table, a roof over your head, nice clothes... It would feel strange in the beginning, but as time passed the memories of one's old life would fade, like they did for Vin. I enjoyed reading and seeing the gradual change in her, how she gradually got used to her new life, gradually became stronger, more self-confident, skilled and outspoken.
32. Things start to move. Kell and Vin are at the house where they are supposed to meet Marsh, but they find a disabled body, blood and every hint that an inquisitors work. But there is a letter, Marsh last words…
Do you think they killed him for information, break him, who was part of the revolution so long, him who had kept his powers as a Misting hidden so long… What will become of the crew? Are they in danger? Is everything over now (because we still have two books ahead)?
Tell me what was going on in your mind when you read these pages?
My first reaction when I read this was extreme sadness, and pain for Kell. I have siblings, and couldn't even start imagining losing them in this way. So I felt a lot of pain for Kell, because obviously those brothers loved each other even though they didn't show it much.
Then I thought they killed him to get information about the rebellion, because I thought they must have figured out he was just an infiltrator. So I was so afraid what would happen to the rest of the crew!
33. Chapter 33 starts again slower… to calm for the things that happened shortly before… It felt to me like the calmness before the storm breaking loose. And then the wheel starts turning a new gathering, the word of Spook and Renoux being captured…
Hell is definitely breaking loose now… did you think it would happen like this or in any other way?
I agree, it definitely felt like the calmness before the storm. And what a storm! I was a bit surprised at how things unfolded. I try my very hardest while reading to not think too much about what might happen later on in the story - I want to just stay in the "here and now" and let everything unfold in front of me, letting myself be surprised. The ending of this book was such a rollercoaster, there were just so many turns from bad to better to worse than ever and so on... So exciting to read!
34. Elends stumbles right in the middle of the catastrophe… Reminded me a bit of a prince on his white horse coming to safe his princess from the dragon. Except for the facts that Elend is not even a Misting and close to powerless in this situation and Vin is the powerful Mistborn perfectly fine at saving herself and him…. As we saw just a few chapters ago. I had to laugh quite a bit about this moment!
Powerless as he is, he is still one of the most courageous characters, heading off with just a few soldiers to save Vin. Of course, he's also one of the most in-love characters, and people being in love often do stupid stuff... ;)
35. When I first read the fight between Kell and the Steel Inquisitor I hardly could follow what was going on. Pushing and Pulling, up and down, left and right, back and forth… It made not much sense because I couldn’t picture it. Did anybody have problems with this fight and making sense of the Allomantic powers that where in action?
This scene was amazing! I did have a bit of a hard time following it - but maybe that's just because I wanted to quickly see what happened, so I might have skimmed through a couple of paragraphs... But it's so well-written, I'm stunned!
36. Aaahhh finally the Lord Ruler makes his grand entrance. And what an entrance! I don’t have any words to put it all in here so I just give you this (Creepy if you ask me!):
But after all there is a little something… With Kell being 36 and the Lord Ruler being there for thousand years… how can he look younger than Kell?
Could there be a connection to the things Vin and Saze discussed during their last walk in Lord Renoux gardens? A Keeper being able to store up age, but how could the Lord Ruler still look that young? He has to store an creepy amount of age to appear like this…
I wasn't so confused about the Lord Ruler looking so young, because from the very beginning I suspected some kind of magic keeping him young. No idea how, though. I must admit though, that I gave no thought at all of the discussion about Keepers...
37. And by now everybody should know why the hell I wanted to do the last DQs. Yes I knew this was going to happen. Doesn’t make it any better. How would have expected THIS?! I clearly remember how many said that they like Kell and that he is a great character… And now the reader is left with this mess… Typical Kell.
For me this was a lot like Sirius death in the Harry Potter books, you read it but you really can’t get your head around the fact that it happened even reading it twice doesn’t make it any better… And I didn’t cry until the next chapter when the Skaa finally leaving their houses and gathering to worship him…
Just say whatever you think needed to be said….
That's a very good connection to make - it's very similar to the death of Sirius actually. In the back of my mind, I feared that something like this would happen. Still, I didn't want to believe it, and even as I read it I didn't want to realize it actually happened. I found Kell very interesting from the beginning, and I grew very fond of him throughout the book. However, I've realized that something bad usually happens to my favorite characters, so I usually try to keep an emotional distance... Still, it was so sad and I spent the next few pages hoping to find out that it was all just a trick and suddenly he would reappear.
38. And finally a few things about the Kandra. It is in fact the killed Lord Renoux who appears with Kells body. That’s what Kandra do. They are grown up mistwraith. Taking the body and duplicate the deceased.
Very, very nasty if you ask me. I’m totally on Vins side when she is repelled by this sight. I would guess nobody expected something like this.
I didn't expect it either, and it is kind of nasty. Okay, it's very nasty. I'm pretty sure I would have reacted in the exact same way as Vin.
39. And finally we understand what Kell had planned. Why he had asked Saze about so many religions, what I bet not many of you noticed ;) and what he meant when he said he would take on the Lord Ruler and why he spread the rumors…
I’ve no clue how to put anything about this topic in a question of sorts…
“There is always another secret.” - Kelsier
I can't believe how many clues there are to events, scattered all over the book, and I missed so many of them! But that's good writing, I guess - I certainly enjoyed all of these little surprises.
40. Last but not least… Vin enters the palace and faces of the Lord Ruler. Just awesome… Until the last page everything could have happened and in fact it happened.
Marsh is alive and lives up to his nickname “Ironeyes” … The Lord Ruler isn’t the man we got to know from the logbook and stangely enough he has Allomanci and Feruchemistic powers (which is the reason he could live this long! Remember how Vin tried to burn Saze storage from one of his metals? Feeling the extra bit of power but unable to reach it?)
And that’s the end of the first book, the evil Lord is defeated… but he had quite some last words. Any idea what he could have meant? And even more what will happen in the second book?
That was such an awesome ending! I couldn't tear my eyes off the pages, I just kept reading and reading - and it's been quite some time since I read a book like that... The final words of the Lord Ruler made me feel very uneasy - I think something bad will be waiting for our heroes in the next book... I desperately want to continue reading this series!
