35559 Volunteering for Cheery!
35559 Question! I JUSTTTT finished reading this in May. Would I still be able to participate in DQs since I read during the challenge, or no?
Jun 08, 2021 07:56AM

35559 Honestly Brittany! lol what are the odds!! Oh well. I was planning on reading Addie LaRue soon, so at least the odds were in my favor for that one. Maybe we'll finally get to do DQs too

35559 Wowwww. I would have waited to read Cerulean Sea had I known it was going to be a BOM
35559 DQ Day 3
Chapters 21 to 33

11. For someone claiming and trying to be body positive about herself, Willowdean sure isn't giving anyone else any slack. Her description of Hannah, like with others, was just mean. Do you think the author is projecting Willowdean's insecurities on how she sees herself onto others?

I think it's clear at this point that Will is not as confident as she pretends to be. Those who are extra judgmental of others tend to view themselves the poorest.

12. What did you think about the incident Patrick kneed in the balls incident? He didn't seem like Mitch's best friend saying that (honestly, maybe Patrick and Willowdean should date). What did you think about her mom's reaction and the resulting blow up between mom & daughter?
Side note: to anyone with teenagers, we are here for you.

I was proud of her! Super lame she was suspended and grounded when really she was just standing up for herself. Patrick deserved it. Though I know teens are hard to deal with, there is just SUCH a disconnect between Will and her mom. It's almost painful to listen to. Wills mom is so absorbed in her pageant world, she's almost blind to the daughter right in front of her.

13. Did anyone else want to high five Ellen for calling out Willowdean on her crap? What did you think of their argument? Do you think the rift will be repaired? If so, do you think a Dolly Parton sing-along (thanks Cat) will be part of their healing process?

The argument was so petty. I think Will just thinks of herself and Ellen had every right to call her out. Lol and then Will really thought she could get away without an apology. Though again....Callie is annoying as ever. I hope not because I heard Cats was terrible lol, and I don't think I can take a Dolly Parton musical.

14. Based on the blurb, Millie's attitude and pep talk while at the restaurant is what I would of expected from Williowdean. What do you think of these girls deciding to enter the pageant? What did you think of Millie's pep talk?

I think it's good for them. I mean there's no reason they shouldn't be able to, and I'm glad that they're starting to realize that

15. Thoughts on Mitch? Where do you think his and Willowdean's relationship will go? Do you think she'll crush his poor soft heart?

I don't think it's going to go anywhere. She pretty much said she isn't interested in him and I think he's going to be crushed. I personally think she just wants a Bo rebound.

Willowdean is so annoying lol. This book is annoying. But imma push through for the points for my team.

35559 Lol...as much as I'm disliking Dumplin...I LOVE Bo ahhaa. he's just like all the boys I decide to make bad decisions over.
35559 DQ for Day 2
Chapters 11-20

6. Picking up on the previous grief question to turn it around towards Willowdean and her mother. Will seems to think (I'm paraphrasing here) that her mother is a heartless cow and wants to use Lucy's room all to herself without any consideration whatsoever for anyone else. I can't help but wonder though if the mother isn't somehow trying to be close to Lucy - her own sister - by setting up a craft room in Lucy's space. Everyone deals with grief in their own way, and while yes, I agree with her (unlike Will) that the dusty old things will eventually need to go, I feel like she's trying to find a way to cope at the same time.

I don't know the question here, but in question 5 I had pretty much summed up that people deal with grief differently. Personally I think Wills mom is just selfish, but this could be her way of dealing with grief

7. Will and Bo. Thoughts? More particularly, Will's reaction to finding out that Bo will start going to the same school?

I think Bo should have told her, but Will sorta overreacted. However, I'm hoping that Will wasn't just Bos summer fling :(

8. The more I read, the more I wonder how Ellen and Will are (still) friends with the way they talk to each other. According to Will, they are drifting apart because Ellen is having sex and because of Callie (she doesn't quite say it but it is definitely there). Their interactions however do make me wonder, a lot. I feel like they're friends more because it's a habit than anything else. They're both dependent on each other - Will because she doesn't seem to have other friends and can't stay in the pool alone? Ellen because she needs a back-up when she goes to pick up her pay check?) What do you make of their friendship now that we know more. Irreparable rift? Habit? Undying friendship?

It's weird. I think they both deserve to have other friends, but I also don't think you should let your friends be shitty to your other friends. I do think Will is too overprotective, but Callie isn't exactly nice to Will.

9. And this inevitably brings me to Will's interactions with Callie. It seems like Callie is at least trying, even though there is the fat-girl-issue, but she isn't completely ignoring Will, unlike Will herself, who barely manages to be civil to the girl. Sure, I completely understand the jealousy of thinking that someone is stealing your (best) friend from you, but it isn't helping Will's case that she is basically being a douche to the girl.

I don't AT ALL think Callie is trying haha. It's fake trying. Considering she's literally mocking Will behind her back? That isn't trying.

10. Did anyone else have that moment of "oh shit, something really terrible is going to happen on the date" when Ellen and Tim tell Will that Patrick Thomas is Mitch's best friend. Or is it just me who thinks that there is a very obvious lack of mobbing and finger-pointing? Not that this is a bad thing, on the contrary! Though I do find it odd since Will has A LOT of issues and basically hates people who are not Ellen (and Bo)

I forgot who Patrick Thomas was, but I honestly think Will is just doing this to get "back at" Bo. My guess is that she doesn't actually like Mitch.
35559 DQs Day 1 - Chaps 1 - 10

1. What do you think of Willowdean? Does she feel like a sufficiently real person?
Ugh, not to me. I don't know how to explain why I feel this way though unfortunately.

2. What you you think about her relationship with Ellen? They are starting to keep secrets from each other now - do you think that this is the start of a drifting apart or will they stay close?
I think that's just how high school friendships tend to be. Though I did think Ellen's friend at the pool was really rude, and it wasn't cool that Ellen didn't stick up for Will at all. That being said, Will does need to recognize that Ellen can have other people in her life.

3. Bo is interesting - the opposite of Will in terms of being reserved in comparison to her chattiness, but with something lurking in his backstory. Do you want to have a guess at what's up with him? Would anyone NOT have done the same as Will and followed him to the abandoned school in the hopes of more making out?!
LOL im 24 and that's exactly something I would have done. I like that Bo is all mysterious and everything.

4. Will claims ownership of "fat" when she introduces herself to Bo. How successful do you think she is in her aim to stop it from being an insult?
I HATED this part. It doesn't feel confident to me. It just feels like she's saying it out of insecurity. There's more to people than being "fat" or "skinny". And if people are going to make those judgements, then let them. They suck anyways.

5. Lucy has clearly been a big influence in both Will and Ellen's lives, and yet they haven't been talking about her at all since her death. Do you think this is a normal reaction to a sudden death? Would you be like Will's mother, and get rid of everything, or keep it?
I think that everyone copes differently with death. I feel like that's what is being portrayed with Will and her mom. Her mom is trying to get rid of everything as her way of moving on, and Will is still wanting to cling to everything. Everyone heals at their own pace :)

35559 I'm kinda glad I don't need to re read Midnight Library for this month because I hatedddd that book. (mostly due to the mental health approach. I suffer from anxiety and depression and I think the author is super against medication which really bothers me. I think different things work for different people and you shouldn't like.."shun" one or the other)
Jun 05, 2021 12:26AM

35559 ugh I started Dumplin....absolutely not my thing. I'm gonna push through tho for our DQ points!
Jun 02, 2021 05:29PM

35559 This was probably answered and I forgot. I'm reading Before and After, and there aren't really "characters". it's like...Nonfiction and it's about real people from the Tennessee Children's Home Society, so it feels wrong listing them

35559 How come we haven't used my other Super Powereds book? Did I input something wrong :(?
May 28, 2021 10:14AM

35559 I read Glass in highschool, the whole series actually. I loved them
May 27, 2021 10:32PM

35559 It's SO cliche and "Pinteresty". It hurts my dark dark soul lmao.

But im gonna push through because this was recommended by a ton of teams so we can use it for that
May 27, 2021 04:46PM

35559 I know I'm in the VERY small percentage that doesn't like it....
May 27, 2021 02:55PM

35559 Y'all....I've gotta say it. I hate The House in the Cerulean Sea. I'm making myself finish but it is SO painfully cheesy and corny. It pains me how nauseatingly "sweet" this book tries to be
May 17, 2021 11:08PM

35559 It worked fine for me?
May 17, 2021 11:51AM

35559 Just updating, I'm still working on my 3 books right now. life has been super busy!!!
May 13, 2021 06:56PM

35559 Nobody answered my question before haha..about if there are mini challenges in this challenge! I've never played before so I was curious
