Brooke, I liked The Woman in Cabin 10. But everyone told me In an Dark, Dark Wood was even better! I only am into the first couple of chapters but looking forward to this read!

18. Do you have a favourite character? I love Starr's parents and Uncle. One of my favourite lines from her Momma is:
"Seven's not a mistake, I love him to death, but Maverick made a mistake in his actions.
I love Starr's parents too! They are so real. Actually, the author has really done a great job developing all the characters.
19. Did you think it was a good idea for Starr to be interviewed on TV? Between that and the family hiding DeVante do you think the King will do more than just threaten them?
Starr was interviewed anonymously, and I think her reasoning was justified. But yes, her family is putting themselves in danger with everything they are doing.
20. So exciting that her Momma got a promotion. Have you ever been successful for a job you REALLY wanted?
I wish I found the job that I REALLY wanted! I'm still looking! LOL!
21. Here we go. The Grand Jury. What do you think the outcome will be? What should it be?
I finished the book and know the answer so won't comment.

13. How would you react to seeing a tank in your neighborhood? How do you react when you see those scenes on TV? Is your reaction different if the scenes come from another country versus coming from your own country?
I can't imagine seeing tanks in my neighborhood. I'd be scared to death! I think when I see scenes on TV I think, we'll that's not happening here. So, I definitely have a different reaction when it's happening in our own country. It's scary that it has to come to that extreme measure.
14. What do you think of DeVante now that you know he was hiding the truth from the Carters? What do you think of his reasons for doing so?
I hate that he lied. His reasons for stealing the money make me have a bit of sympathy. However, he's putting the Carters in danger and they are trying to help him.
15. What did you think of Starr’s dad’s and DeVante’s reaction to her revelation that Chris was her boyfriend? Do you think they are justified in their negative response?
She knew what her father's reaction would be and she was right. I don't think they are justified. Everyone is a person. Race is only what you see. They should get to know Chris as a person before making judgments.
16. There was an explosive argument between Starr and Hailey. Do you think Hailey is truly racist, or just says racist things? What do you think of Starr and Maya’s moment of bonding over minority status?
Isn't that really the same thing though? Can you say racist things and not be a racist? I feel like since Starr and Maya are some of the few minorities in their school they'd bond. And after Hailey's remarks they have even more reason to bond since she treated them both badly.
17. If you were in Uncle Carlos’s shoes, would you have punched One-Fifteen? It may cost him a job he loves, but he doesn’t seem to regret it.
I think yes I probably would have. That's his family that One-Fifteen messed with and family always comes first.

9. As Starr and her family huddle around the TV after hearing gun shots the night of Khalil's funeral, they watch news. The news anchor speaks of "multiple reports that a gun was found in the car" and the fact that "there was also suspicion that the victim was a drug dealer as well as a gang member". This comes after the police chief gave a statement stating that they saw no reason to arrest the officer who shot Khalil. What do you think they are trying to do with that information? Do you think it's valid? What about the protestors? Do they have right to be upset about the situation? Does their means of protest get their point across?
I think they are trying to cover their butts! Yes, protesters have a right to be upset. The number of unarmed African Americans being killed by police is alarmingly increasing. However, I don't think the rioting and some of the ways they are going about making their point are justified.
10. Starr has been giving her boyfriend Chris the silent treatment for a while now and when he confronts her about it, she tells him that he wouldn't understand. Her rationale for that is because he's white. What was your reaction to that statement? Do you agree or disagree with that? Can Chris understand where Starr is coming from?
I don't think she's giving him any credit and disagree. If she can't share her feelings than I don't think it's a good relationship.
11. The protest at Starr's school "For Khalil" really upset Starr. She mentioned that her "Williamson rules go out the door and the Starr from Garden Heights shows up". Do you think we are going to start seeing more of "Starr from Garden Heights" while she's at school? Do you think the two personas were necessary?
Yes, I think with the heightened media of what's going on with Khalil's death we will be seeing more of the Starr from Garden Heights appear at school. I understand why she has the two personas, but I don't think she's able to completely be herself by acting differently.
12. At the end of chapter 11, Maverick, Starr's father, tells Starr, "if you're ready to talk baby, talk. I got your back." Do you think that Starr is going to talk? Do you think that she should talk? What do you think you would do in that situation?
I think she will end up talking and I think she should so that Khalil's death was not in vain. It's hard for me to say what I'd do. I'd hope that I could speak up and have the support of my family but I understand why it may be difficult for her.

Had the worst day of my life today basically... car caught on fire had to call fire dept.. it really wasnt a big deal but of course i still panicked..it was a ..."
So sorry to hear this Romina! It stinks but glad that you're okay!

I think for the most part people have different personas. Especially how they act at home versus out in public.
6. We are introduced to Starr's prep school friends. Hailey makes a comment related to "fried chicken" and Starr gets offended. Do you think Hailey meant the remark in an offensive way, was it intentional or not? Was Starr being hyper-sensitive? How do you think this will affect the relationship between the two girls in the rest of the book?
I don't think Hailey meant it to be offensive as she was relating it to their recent lunch. Starr was being hyper-sensitive due to the circumstances surrounding Khalil's death. I think this will put a strain on their relationship since it seemed to be divided already.
7. Throughout this section you feel the underlying guilt Starr is experiencing regarding the relationship between her and Khalil, or lack thereof. Do you think this was a conscious decision on her part, because she wanted to distance herself from life in Garden Heights or was it inevitable, a natural progression as they got older?
I think it was a natural progression. Part of it was that she was at a different school and on a sports team. That takes up a lot of time. Plus it seems Khalil was involved in gangs and drug dealing andI don't think Starr would not have been okay being around that.
8. Starr is asked to recount the events of that fateful night to the detectives. How do you think she handled interacting with the police officers? What does this say about her character?
I think that she did well. It would have been difficult for me to control myself as well as she did if my friend was killed by a cop and they seemed to be putting the blame on the friend.

1. Starr is considering whether to admit she was at the scene or not, due to fear of her own safety. What do you think you would do in that situation.
I'm not sure. I understand why she's afraid. She's going to be thrown into the spotlight as the only witness and I'm guessing if she does admit she was there it's going to be a she said/he said type situation.
2. Do you think Uncle Carlos is right when he says that the police officer may have felt threatened because he knew Khalil was a drug dealer?
No, drug dealer or not, you have to give Khalil the benefit of the doubt. There was no reason to believe he was armed or going to hurt the police officer.
3. Starr is reluctant to trust the police with her statement, and I think I would feel the same in her situation. Do you think that Starr should trust the police?
I think I answered this in question one, but no, the police are looking out for themselves. I don't think she should trust them because they aren't out to protect her. They are trying to justify one of their own shooting and killing a drug dealer.
4. What are your thoughts on Mav's insistence on staying in the neighbourhood despite the fact that Starr has lost two friends in her short life to both a gang shooting and a police shooting? Do you think that life would be safer for Starr if she moved away?
Yes, I think life would be safer for Starr if they moved away. She's in a neighborhood with gangs and shootings. I would not feel safe raising my kids there.

Good luck Alissa. I had to give up on Strange the Dreamer.....was too big for me to try to force myself to read it. It just didn't interest me.

Wow, great haul Laura! Happy reading!

I voted for the July BOMs. If Firefly Lane wins I'll have no choice but to read it. lol"
