35559 Questions for Circe are completed. Is there a spot on the spreadsheet to link them?
35559 DQs for Chapters 9 through 15

9. Circe's character goes through quite a few developments in personality in these chapters, both positively and negatively. How do you think the time in Aiaia has changed her?
I definitely think it has changed her. She's grown a spine and is not so easy to walk over anymore. She is become hardened though which is not in her true nature or maybe it is to a point.

10. "But in solitary life, there are rare moments when another soul dips near yours, as stars once a year brush the Earth" (chapter 11) - when I read this quote, I felt sorrow and sympathy for Circe, for all her life, she has been dealt the bad hand. What did you feel? Do you think Circe felt any real connection with Daedelus or do you think she is attracted to anyone who treats her a little differently from her family?
I think for someone who is so starved for any type of positive attention that she would have to be attracted to anyone who treats her better than her family. I don't think there's a real connection other than he's not destroying her confidence.

11. Every chapter in this section explored her relationship with a different character - Daedelus, Madea, Pasiphae in Crete and we get a sneak peek at her relationship with Odysseus. Each experience affects her adversely, sometimes positively, most times negatively. Which character did you like/ dislike the most and why? How do you think that character changed Circe?
I disliked Pasiphae the most. She was just terrible. Madea was kind of a snake in sheep's clothing pretending to be who she was. Daedelus was the most likeable. Odysseus was just a flat out pain in the neck jerk. There's no liking him. Typical user and abuser.

12. Circe's trust in mortals is shattered after her traumatic experience with a man. How do you think this will affect the rest of the story? Do you think she'll come to change her opinion?
She is now more careful about giving and receiving her trust. I think it will majorly affect the rest of the story because it changes her character. It shows her transforming into what she will be in the end.
35559 Day 2 DQs Chapters 4 - 8

5. Circe's first love does not end so well. What did you think of the creation of Scylla?
I think Circe was not ready for such a relationship. Scylla became a form of revenge.

6. Pharmakeia is introduced in these chapters. What are you thoughts on how magic is defined in a world of gods and godesses?
I found it very confusing as far what they could and couldn't do with Pharmakeia. I guess magic is considered to be more hands on in your face than what the gods and goddesses can do.

7.Madeline Miller pieces together Greek mythology to tell this story. For example, Glaucus was said to have found the herbs, rather than been given them from Circe. What do you think about how Madeline Miller uses characters in Greek Mythology to tell her story?
I have little to no background with mythology so I couldn't begin to tell the differences between the story. I would imagine like any author that Miller embellished the story to make it more palatable to the reader.

8. What is your opinion of the relationship between Hermes and Circe?
It's a win win situation for both of them. I think it's good that she didn't fall for him.
35559 Day 1 DQs Chapters 1 - 4 (for October 2nd)

1. Our setting for this book is the world of Greek mythology. What is your background with Greek mythology? How do you think your knowledge and opinions of Greek mythology will influence your reading of this book?
I have a very limited background with Greek mythology. I just have never gotten into it really. I know some of the basics and that's it. I don't think it will influence me at all.

2. In the first few chapters, we are introduced to Circe's family. I found myself having many different feelings about the characters presented. Which relationship has caused you the most emotion? What is it about that relationship that causes those emotions?
I would have to say her parents. They were either ignoring her or belittling her there was no in between.

3. Why does Circe approach Prometheus? How do you think this will affect her later in the book?
I think she was curious about mortals. She found him to be like minded and she could empathize with him.
4. How does Glaucos's position affect what he sees in Circe? If Gaucos was invited to a family reunion of Circe's, how do you think he would compare her to others in her family?
I think he would fit right in! He used her the same as everyone seems to do. I feel he felt obligated at the start but later didn't care once he got what he wanted.

35559 No but I will now and for Truly devious
Oct 17, 2020 11:59AM

35559 Just entered my last book. Let me know if we need anything else
Oct 17, 2020 05:34AM

35559 Haha if I get 4-5 hours I’ve had a full night of sleep. My brain just can’t shut off
Oct 17, 2020 04:53AM

35559 Geez Lexi did you sleep at all last night? Thanks for all your hard work!
Oct 17, 2020 04:30AM

35559 Truly devious has steak in it as well
Oct 16, 2020 10:57PM

35559 I’m going to read Truly Devious. I was going to
save it for the next round but I’ll use it now. I did a search and it has pasta, salt and lemon in it so I should be able to cover what we need with a couple of words to spare
Oct 16, 2020 10:25PM

35559 I’ll find something else
Oct 16, 2020 10:13PM

35559 I have it covered. I’m going to read Garfield...Recipes with Cattitude! I’ll read it tonight and have it on there in the morning.
Oct 16, 2020 06:52PM

35559 Just updated my two missing books. I know you're reading a cookbook for the missing vinegar spots Lexi. How many other books do we need? I can get something else in before the deadline.
Oct 15, 2020 11:31AM

35559 Sounds like a good plan. I should finish this “vinegar” book today. It’s pretty bad. I don’t know how it won an award and I must have been asleep when I thought it was a newberry award 🤣😂😅 I’ve hit a string of not so great books...
Oct 11, 2020 11:32AM

35559 Cool! I guess I just missed it 😁
Oct 11, 2020 10:57AM

35559 Geez how did I get that wrong? I guess I saw the gold thing on the front and didn’t look at it.
I didn’t realize we could read cookbooks. That would have made it a whole lot easier to find vinegar
Oct 11, 2020 10:25AM

35559 The second book in that series mentions it I think 4 or 5 times. I just hope the book is decent hahaha. It won a Newberry Medal Award so it can’t be too bad I wouldn’t think
Oct 11, 2020 05:46AM

35559 I found a book Raspberries and Vinegar this morning that has vinegar mentioned 15 times of which I'll be able to use it 8 times.

I forgot to add that the copy is on the spreadsheet as the last sheet.

35559 Lexi-
I copied the spreadsheet today to see if I could sort it to find out which words we need a little easier and which meal numbers needed vinegar. Completed meals are highlighted. There's a few meals that I think we are missing some items on yet for example 67, 100 and 101. 100 and 101 are kind of jumbled but I didn't do anything with them. I only messed around with the copy I made. I don't know if you want to take a look at it and if it will actually be any help. I'm going to change out what I can for vinegar on both sheets since I have a book to add to replace what I am taking away from previous books.
