Hi berenice, I agree with you about Inan and Amari

I think Zélie is scared because the incantation was so strong that it awakened even the royals magic who maybe had ancestors who were Magi. so now the fight for their freedom and for justice won't be that easy against royals with magi abilities

Berenice, the buddy-read idea of the next book is absolutely brilliant, I would love to do it again with you guys

Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning

"My name is MacKayla, Mac for short. I'm a sidhe-seer, one who sees the Fae, a fact I accepted only recently and very reluctantly.

My philosophy is pretty simple - any day nobody's trying to kill me is a good day in my book. I haven't had many good days lately. Not since the walls between Man and Fae came down. But then, there's not a sidhe-seer alive who's had a good day since then."

When MacKayla's sister was murdered, she left a single clue to her death, a cryptic message on Mac's cell phone. Journeying to Ireland in search of answers, Mac is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to master a power she had no idea she possessed - a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae.

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister's death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho...while at the same time, the ruthless V'lane - an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women - closes in on her. As the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac's true mission becomes clear: to find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book - because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control both worlds in their hands.
35559 Hi Guys,

You make a valid great point about Inan here and I agree with you but at the same time the way the author used Inan makes him feel like a tool to explore some issues not a freaking character, which makes it so hard for people to connect with
it's okay to use your characters to make statements just don't make them feel they're only there just for that purpose
35559 Rick wrote: "Yeah, I forgot to mention that I enjoyed seeing Amari begin to act like someone strong and in control. I was angry at the way she stabbed the dude on the boat in the arena. I did not buy that she w..."

yeah, I totally agree, I think this is the book where underrated characters are the best like Tzain and Amari

Inan was so indecisive the whole book, like just pick a side and Zélie's has made so many stupid decisions but I'd like to give her some slack, she went through a lot
35559 well, I think this book have a strong beginning, stronger ending and just below average middle that was just meh for me
but I still appreciate that the author made for her a story a place when she can portray true life issues like police brutality, racism and oppression

the pacing was a problem for me and that's what made some parts of the story feel lackluster while others were brilliant.

the ending was unexpected in so many ways, I didn't think Inan will get killed off in the end but I think it makes sense for the king to react in that manner, but Oh How I loved the development Amari goes through in this book, it is refreshing to see her get past her trauma fight for what she believes in and stand with what's right.

I think the incantation at the end was so powerful because of Zélie's ancestors involvement that it awakened the doormat powers in the royals who have magi ancestors

I will definitely be reading the next book in the series and I think this one could've been great have the author not fallen for the allure of YA cliches
35559 so I just finished reading the book and I'd like to discuss it further with you guys
35559 Rick wrote: "That is a good run down. I can't help but think that if I were one of the gods there, I would have picked someone I could rely on more."

the chosen one trope is rarely done right unfortunately :(

I agree with you rick about not having a lot of things to talk about. I find the middle of this book underwhelming and the pace is slow. After the great first chapters, I'm totally disappointed with how the author is handling the pace and the plot progress.

About the characters and the stupid decisions they keep making. It feels like the author can't find any way to create threats but make her characters behave in a stupid illogical way. I mean who would actually think that stopping for a night and a day is a good idea when everything is on a stake.

but I still have hope that the story will get better with time
I just can't believe that Zélie is in so stupid, I mean let's rehash every idiotic thing that she does :

she helps Amari even though she doesn't know her and that was the only way to move the plot forward and yet by helping Amari she condemns her village to a massacre

She slips up and let Inan discover where they are when she's talking to him in her dream and that's the only way he could've tracked them down

instead of just leaving when Inan finds them, she chooses to attack him which result in the kidnapping of her brother and Amari and loosing the scroll

Says yes to the celebration which means that they are giving more time for the king's men to capture them.

Zélie does the most stupid things who are coincidentally very convenient to the plot development and I don't like this manner of storytelling. it lacks creativity

Thank you, Rick for sharing this article with us I totally agree with you about the cruelty we live in and how it's so easy for some to promote hate speeches to try and oppress a minority

Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake

"I need Owen to explain this. Because yes, I do know that Owen would never do that, but I also know Hannah would never lie about something like that."

Mara and Owen are about as close as twins can get. So when Mara's friend Hannah accuses Owen of rape, Mara doesn't know what to think. Can the brother she loves really be guilty of such a violent crime? Torn between the family she loves and her own sense of right and wrong, Mara is feeling lost, and it doesn't help that things have been strained with her ex-girlfriend and best friend since childhood, Charlie.

As Mara, Hannah, and Charlie navigate this new terrain, Mara must face a trauma from her own past and decide where Charlie fits in her future. With sensitivity and openness, this timely novel confronts the difficult questions surrounding consent, victim blaming, and sexual assault.
