35559 @Jessi

ok i am AWFUL at narrowing down a list so i've got my 'actual recommendations' and then also a runner-up list lol. i figure you can never have too many book recs anyway ;) i tried to pick books that weren't super well known so hopefully there's at least a few that you haven't heard of before

my recs

Envy of Angels (Sin du Jour, #1) by Matt Wallace urban fantasy / comedy

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins sci-fi / horror

The Hanging Girl by Eileen Cook mystery / thriller

and then the runner-up list because there's just so many great books out there. you can pick from the main list or from these if one of them sounds better to you. sorry if i over-whelmed you with choices lol i've obviously read way too many books ;)

runner up list

Nightlife (Cal Leandros #1) by Rob Thurman urban fantasy

The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle horror

Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix horror / comedy

also i just wanted to say that since you enjoy the october daye series, seanan's incryptid series - first book Discount Armageddon - is also urban fantasy and really good and so is Rolling in the Deep which is a sci-fi / horror story written under her mira grant pseudonym. not part of the 'official recs' but just thought i'd mention them since i saw all the october daye books on your shelf!
35559 haha glad to know you're enjoying them! we sped up a little bit with the last few because the other people wanted to read them before christmas got here. we're starting on her incryptid series on january 1st if you're interested. first book is discount armageddon [the mods put up the thread earlier today] and there's only 7 out now so not such a huge number to read as the toby series
35559 @Jessi I'm gonna work on picking my recs for you today but I just wanted say that I was going to rec the October Daye series and I went to your read books and saw you already rated all of them 4 or 5 stars lol definitely one of my favorite urban fantasy series though

35559 haha wow that is BIG tbr. i think mine was somewhere around 650 at the beginning of this year and now it's just under 550 ...not counting the 46 books on my new releases shelf, but i can't actually read them if they aren't released yet so i like to think it's not cheating to keep them separate ;) for 2019 i'm hoping to get it under 500.
35559 @claudia i mean the luidaeg definitely still has the potential to do terrible things and sometimes does, but also she's one of the few purebloods to think of humans/merlins/changelings as like ...people who should not be murdered / not expendable in general so she's pretty much always gonna be on my good side for that lol
35559 yeah, the luidaeg is built up as like this big ~scary monster~ but i'd actually say she's the nicest of the firstborn we've met so far lol

35559 @Mods can we get a buddy read for Discount Armageddon (InCryptid, #1) by Seanan McGuire for 1/1/19?

for anyone who did any of the early buddy reads in the october daye series - this is a similar series by the same author but it's only got 7 books out now instead of 12 if you want to try something a bit easier to catch up on lol
35559 i'm probably not going to finish it til next week at this rate - i'm still at 25% lol. just not motivated to read it again so soon i guess, but the flip side to that is that i remember most of it thankfully.

i agree it's so creepy that toby's grandma basically stole her ex boyfriend. like ...your grandma is literally banging the father of your child, what kind of redneck nonsense is this lol and it's so shitty that she blamed toby for being gone for 14 years because like she KNEW she was fae the whole time so she had at least an idea of what was up / it wasn't toby's fault. ugh.

i'll go request the thread for incryptid. maybe we can get some of the people from the earlier buddy reads in this series involved again lol
35559 yeah a lot of the people in faerie seem to be very all or nothing about a lot of things
35559 yeah i've read all her books lol i was actually going to suggest we start the incryptid series in january if you guys were interested. there's 7 out now and 8 is out in march so we could probably get through the whole series before then.

i agree that janet/miranda is just awful. it kind of almost makes sense how amandine is though because like (view spoiler)
Dec 19, 2018 09:34AM

35559 haha thanks, it definitely took a lot of discipline to keep myself on track. think i'm gonna dial it back a bit next year ;)
35559 @claudia yeah there is a lot of weird plot holes with selkies and elf shot. like a few books ago it said it was always fatal to selkies as well bc they were basically humans w/o the skin but back when connor got shot they said it only killed him bc the arrow itself hit a fatal spot so i'm just like ???? i guess i'll give seanan a pass bc she's got a LOT going on but it's still kind of annoying. although i guess w/ gillian maybe the reason turning her into a selkie worked is bc shifting blood always seems to 'burn it out', like how october survived even though she is still part human ...lots to think about lol
35559 hahaha omg

“Toby Daye took over the Silences just so she could fuck the King of Cats on the royal throne,”

i lost it there. also i feel like that's the kind of thing that tybalt would find hilarious but toby would be absolutely MORTIFIED
35559 haha yeah, when i first read it i actually read it all in one day, but this time i'm gonna take my time with it. i still remember most of it from a few months ago though.

also omg do you have the link to that tumblr post because that sounds amazing and also way too accurate lol
Dec 18, 2018 05:35AM

35559 i started Blood Oranges today, which is my 90th and last book! it's definitely been a little bit exhausting but i've officially read or deleted all my books from 2016 and it feels soooo good. my tbr is still way too long but i feel like i've made progress and gotten better at DNFing stuff that isn't working as well.
35559 @Cathy haha that was my thought too re: gillian. i was like did she not JUST get kidnapped? i guess in reality it was at least 5 or 6 books ago but STILL. and yeah cliff and miranda are just the worst. why is everyone that toby knows the worst? also good point about her being legally an adult. like if she wanted to go see toby they wouldn't be able to stop her.

@Claudia yeah the whole thing is like ????????? although also kind of makes sense in a way with the way the dochas sidhe powers are. i'll wait til cathy catches up to you to get into it though lol
