Discussion Questions, Day Four - Parts 7 & 8 || Pages 227-312 (end)18. This book is based around biochemical warfare. I haven't heard of any cases of this in our world. What do you think would happen if someone released a deadly virus on purpose to your country, your neighbouring countries and the world? Do you think we would response similarly or differently? Taking into consideration the time periods.
I think there would be utter panic, looting, and general dystopia. I would hope that some people who remain immune would find each other and band together. If I were immune, I would hope I would find like individuals and find a safe shelter.
19. What do you think about Gwen's act against Hook with the Katana? And the scene afterwards? I was surprised by Gwen's actions as I haven't come across Wendy/Gwen fighting like that before
Again, Gwen had been alone for almost a year protecting her sister and brother and probably had to do some horrific things to survive. I'm not surprised by the brutality
20. Hook's and Jack's actions at the end of the book surprised me a bit. Hook with his gloves and Jack staying behind -
"With a last glance at the ship, he places a hand behind his ear, touching the mark of the Marauders branded on his skin. Finally, he dashes inside the burning building." What do you think this tells us about the way they behaved throughout the book?
I think it shows again the brutality they received as children from their mom, and his unwillingness to go back to her defeated.
21. What do you think will happen in the next book? What will happen with the Queen of England and Germany?
I think perhaps they might die in the next book
22. What do you think of Spinale's interpretation of the Lost Boys, Pete, Gwen and Belle compared to the original (or the Disney version)? The extra characters (The Professor, the Queens? Is it better, the same, worse? Why?
I think it's a more "believable" world - we do have biochemical viruses that could exterminate/incapacitate a good number of people, Bell contrived "wings" the help her fly, and they all lived in a dystopian version of our world. The Disney version is tame and more of a fantasy to me - but I still love it.
23. What are you final thoughts on this books - plot, characters, setting, genre, etc? Will you read the next book? If no, then why not?
I really liked this book and hope to continue in the series down the road.
Discussion Questions - Day 3 19 Aug 5&6 pgs152-226 13. So Jack is Hook's step brother. Were you expecting that? Guess it makes sense as to why he knows all about the palace etc How do you think he ended up with the lost boys? How much of his story do you think Pete knows?
I was not expecting that. I don't think Pete knew much, but he might have suspected that Jack was not with the Lost Boys entirely.
14. When Hook picks up Gwen's dad's dog tags and reads the name, do you think he has made the connection between Gwen and the Professor ( assuming our guess that the professor is Gwen's mother is correct) ?
Yes, I think Hook had an inkling but wasn't quite sure.
15. It's sounds like Jack is like a male version of Cinderella and perhaps the true ruler of Germany. Did you expect him to betray the lost boys. Why do you think he wants to go back to Germany with Hook?
Probably mother issues just like Hook. They both want to have her adoration. Once i learned he was Hook's brother i knew he would cross the lost boys.
16.The Horologia virus was sent to England from Germany. When Queen Bloodred chose to bomb the weapons factory. Do you think she did it on purpose in order to release the virus or was she trying to stop England finding a cure?
I think the Blood Queen did it on purpose - she's an evil Queen
17. We now know for certain that the professor IS Gwen's mother. Given Jack's apparent betrayal and the fact that Gwen is the immune, do you think Pete will believe Gwen didn't know all along? Do you think Hook might try to convince Pete she did in order to get him to had her over?
I honestly believe Gwen had no idea, and that Pet will eventually believe in her, especially if Hook tries to undermine his trust. Hook is very untrustworthy.
18. How do you think this is going to end? Do you think Pete can save the lost boys? What do you think will happen to Hook? Given this is book 1 of a series, do you think this will end with a cliff hanger
I think/hope Hook will be eaten by crocs, Pete will save the lost buys with a cure from Wendy and her mother, and since the other series seem to deal with other retellings, I'm hoping there is not a serious cliffhanger in this one.
Discussion Questions--Day 2 (pg. 77-151, audio pts. 3 & 4)7. The novel is told from two POVs, Gwen's and Hooks. Should Pete's POV have been included? Why or why not?
I like that it's told only from Gwen's and Hook's POVs. They both see Pete in different ways so it's almost like we're getting a clearer picture of him from listening to it from opposing viewpoints. I think Pete's POV might dilute the other POVs
8. In many ways, both Hook and Smeeth are "lost boys" as well. What are your thoughts about how you become a Pete, Hook, or Smeeth because of, in spite of, your life's experiences?
I think Hook had a horrible childhood at the hands of his mother who is still alive, so he's hurting emotionally and physically from ongoing traua. Smeeth is lost but want to follow someone and Hook needs someone to berate and order around given his upbringing. Pete lost his family and then was surrounded by other lost boys. His inner character, and probably the way he was raised before he lost his family, helped him develop a sense of justice and nobility
9. Almost all of the Lost Boys have given up their birth names and taken on nicknames. Is there a significance to this?
I think so. They lost everything else and taking on new names help them stay more positive and focused on the things they can do or their current personalities - like Gabber.
10. When Justice is made the temporary leader, Pete says to him, "Try to go with your gut, kid. Not by the rules." Where is the balance between following the rules and going with your gut?
Rules are just guidelines, especially in the light of the disaster they're all iiving with. Going with your gut helps you make sure you are seeing things more clearly, not strictly by the rules.
11. Who is your favorite character and why?
I like Bella. I think she's a tough little girl
12. What moment in the book, so far, has made you decide you like or dislike it?
I love the dystopian steampunk aspect, and the possible alternate history of some biological virus getting losed in the bombing, so I was "hooked" right away
Cool - Michelle don't worry about those mail order brides unless they start with a U...like Utah Mail Order bride...
