woman - Bobbie is a woman MC and in charge of the "new" tommyknockers
jet - an airplane lost power over Haven
bottle - Gard often had a bottle of alcohol with him
talented - as the townsfolk "became" they become very talented tinkerers
water - they couldn't get the water to put out the fire
power - the tommyknockers used battery power (and organic battery power)
clothes - a local shop right outside Haven sold a lot of t-shirts from nosebleeds
emerald - the cover is green like an emerald

I really like the stories.

My thoughts: (view spoiler)[This book was really bad. There were venomous snakes, tiger venom spider eggs, unicorn wolves, weird owls, buddhas and martial arts. The premise (I think) is that someone was trying to investigate a serial murderer, but the plot was really hard to follow. I'd give it 1/2 star if I could. It could be that the book lost something in translation, but I finished it because I needed it for a challenge. Glad it's over. (hide spoiler)]

My review: (view spoiler)[This was a very weird retelling and mashup of Pride and Prejudice and Fifty Shades of Grey. Parts of it were quite funny, but a lot of it was just not my cuppa. I really liked both original stories, but this writer just didn't grab me. One of the least memorable sentences:

"Oh My! His mouth was so...so...mouthish."

I did like the way the author made fun of the book itself within the book, often referring back to the original novels that were mashed together. At least he acknowledged the ridiculousness of his own work. (hide spoiler)]

31. When Genz started to torture Rosa, it made me think back to the other murders. It started off with 1 hand, then 2 hands, then 2 hands and a foot. What do you think the significance was of cutting of the victims' hands and feet? It didn't appear that he did the same to his prior victims so why the escalation?



32. On that same note, now knowing that the girl was not Thulin in the first chapter, do you still believe the same or have another theory on why Thulin reacted the way she did when she saw the chestnut man at the first crime scene? Was there a valid reason which was not explored, or was it more for dramatic effect?

I honestly don't know - I think she was just in shock

33. Some of us guessed earlier on but we now know what happened to Kristine. Why do you think Genz kept her alive this entire time? And after what was done to her, why do you think Astrid went along with this plan? Was she of sound mind?

I think that she wanted to torture Rosa even more by keeping her alive and using her to make those chestnut dolls. To bring Rosa nightmares and make her suffer.

34. I thought the plot was wrapped up nicely in the end but that last chapter with Linus Bekker was a little ominous. What do you think he will do next? Do you think he'll take over where the Chestnut Man left off?

Lunas Becker is a scary dude. Yes I think somehow he will pick up the torch.

35. With how lengthy this book was, did it keep your attention throughout? Did it end as you expected? How did you rate it?

Yes it definitely kept my attention, and I liked the way things started to speed up near the end of the book. I gave it 5 stars. I loved it. One of my favorite Scandinavian crime books to date.

36. I read that not only is Netflix adapting this novel into a series, but that the author is writing a follow-up novel. Are you interested in reading more by this author? Interested in reading more in this world/series?

Definitely, I hope it picks up where Linus Bekker left off, and that Thulin and Hess somehow develop a relationship they are both afraid of.

Day 7 - Chapters 99-113

26. How convenient that Hess found the chestnut people & animals by accident in the photo from the case in 1989. I honestly thought this could have been carried out /written better. What were your thoughts? Did you still remember they had requested the photos but never looked at them?

Yes I remember they requested them. Perhaps the tech person is somehow involved and delayed getting those photos to try and keep Hess from finding the killer

27. Lol after the chapter in which Genz and Thulin went for a run I made a note to ask you guys what your thoughts were of him, and then there was this big reveal! Did you suspect him at all?

Yes I did suspect him! I thought he was acting a bit funky before the reveal.

28. It had been mentioned before that Rosa was in the foster system. Did you pick up on it back then and already make the connection? What was your theory?

I did not, but I thought the back story about the twins her parents wanted to adopt was very interesting too.

29. Wow, that last chapter 113 - didn't expect this background story to hit me so hard. Did you expect anything like this? How do you feel about Rosa, her parents and the twins right now?

I think Rosa is somehow connected to The Chestnut Man but I don't know how. I think she did a really bad thing with the twins and maybe the twins are the ones acting out now...

30. Also, where is Frederick Vogel??? Do you think he plays a part in this, or was it just a coincidence that he wasn't there when Rosa asked about him?

I definitely think Frederick is involved somehow. Whether he's protecting Rosa or doing something more nefarious I'm not sure.

To kind of pick up on the bonus question of Day 4 - I think this book would make an amazing tv show, do you think or hope it'll get made into one? Would you watch?

I think this could be a really good cable show - I would watch it.
