35559 PART ONE - Day 1 & 2

1. Assuming most of you read The Girl on the Train or at least heard about it, what did you expect going into Into The Water? Have your expectations been met so far?
--- I expected the book to grab me from the beginning and make me want to finish reading ASAP. I was a little confused with the writing style and who the speaker was from chapter to chapter.
2a. When Jules was first told about Nel, she was relieved for a moment, because it was no one she 'cared about'. Then she was angry. What to you think happened between the sisters that drove them apart so badly that Jules doesn't even properly know her niece? How has this introduction formed your first opinion of Jules?
--- I have no clue as yet. I am keeping my opinion to myself until I learn more.
3. Katie's sudden death understandably was very hard on her family. Her mum took pills upon pills to numb the pain, but "after a while she came to grasp that the horror of rediscovering her daughter's absence, over and over again, was not worth the hours of oblivion." What are your thoughts on this quote? And where do you think Louise vanishes to in the middle of the night?
--- Maybe she goes to the water to remember.
4. Into The Water is told from quite a lot of different perspectives. Do you think this adds to the story, or does it make things more complicated? Does it affect your reading flow?
--- Yeah jts hard tk keep track. Normally I lime different perspectives as it adds more to the story.
5. Nickie Sage claims to be a psychic and sees or at least feels things that others don't. Why do you think has the author, Paula Hawkins, included this character? Do you think she actually is important to the story, or could it be told without Nickie? Do you personally believe in the occult like tarot readings and seances?
--- I think it fills in gaps in the story and adds to the book. I don't belive or disbelieve.
6. Nel was working on a book on the Drowning Pool before she passed away. Do you get her obsession with the river, and is this the only reason so many people from Beckford seem to have disliked her? Would you personally choose to read a book like hers?
--- Not my cup of tea or book. I see about obsessions as J have my own that people don't understand.

35559 DQs 4: Chapter 28 - Epilogue

22. Jazz made a shocking decision to go visit Billy after no contact with him. He asks G William to help him get in quickly. Why do you think Jazz finally made the decision to visit Billy? Would you trust what Billy tells you?
--- He wanted help finding the impressionist and knew his dad could give him insight. I wouldn't trust him but Jazz thinks he knows when hus father is lying.
23. Why do you think Billy’s request to Jazz about moving the birdbath signified? Do you believe it was a signal? Or just another way to mess with Jazz's head?
--- I think he wanted to make his mom happy. Obviously he meant something else.
24. The Impressionist tells Jasper that he was never supposed to talk to him or see him, which leads me to believe he was taking orders from someone. Do you think Billy was telling the truth about not having contact with him? Do you have any theories of who is pulling his strings?
--- I thought it had to be Billy and that he was not to mess with Jazz because that is his son.
25. The Impressionist has a pretty terrifying trophy in his finger belt! What do you think is the significance of the dual “L-O-V-E” and “F-E-A-R” tattoos?
--- I think it means fear that which you love as it has the ability to harm you.
26. “Sure you are. You just ain’t killed no one yet.” Do you think Jazz killed his mother? Or is Billy messing with his head with the note?
--- I don't think he killed his mother.
27. Final thoughts of the book and overall rating? Are you intrigued enough to continue
--- I really enjoyed and would love to read the next book to see what happens with Jazz and Billy.
35559 DQ 3 Chapters 18 - 28

14. After sharing his theory and brainstorming, Jazz totally manipulated Connie and Howie to get them to go with him to look for evidence instead of calling the Sheriff. (And we've seen him manipulate a lot of people, especially women, before.) What do you think about this behavior?
--- That is what he was taught by his father. It is second nature to him.
15. Jazz spends a lot of time taking care of his Grandmother, and she is awfully toxic. Why do you think he is so determined to stay with her instead of going to a foster home? Is Melissa right to decide to move him out?
--- She is his only famiky and he may think that makes him a better person to take care of her. Melissa is just doing her job and even though it might be best for him he is also losing the ladt of his family.
16. Wow the scene with Ginny was very intense. What did it make you think of with regards to Jazz - his feelings of pleasure conflicting with trying to help? Do you like him any less or more?
--- I like Jazz and am rooting fir him nit to give in to the dark thoughts.
17. Erickson keeps showing up and being pretty abusive? Is he a red herring or something more? (Ha I guess don't answer this if you have read this book before - unless you remember what you thought at the time.)
--- I think there is something more going on with him that meets the eye. I just don't know if it is good or bad.
18. How did the Impressionist know about Jazz's room (or did he?)? Do you think he is going to interact even more with Jazz now, even though it is against orders?
--- Yes he wants to show Jazz tbat he is smarter than him and his father. He may already be interacting with him but I haven't figured oht who the killer is.
19. The scene with the dog and learning not to cry was really horrific. I think that interposed with the scene where he cries when talking to Connie are important. Any thoughts?
--- He is trying to hold on to his humanity. The ability to cry in good and bad situations is very important.
20. Speaking of Connie, what do you think about what she said to Jazz in Chapter 28?
--- She is wise beyond what you woukd think. She is the voice of reason in the story.
21. The Sheriff should not let Jazz be involved.
35559 2: Chapters 9-17

8. "If I catch killers, then maybe that means I'm not a killer," says Jazz. Howie then goes on to give a great reason why Jazz isn't a killer (love Howie)...are you seeing killer tendencies in Jazz?
--- No, I think he sees that but I see a kid who was forced to see and experience thi gs he should not have to know about by his father.
9. Jazz has another interaction with Jeff Fulton, do you think that Jazz should share information about Billy Dent's victims with their families? If so, how would that impact his mental health?
--- No maybe if he was older but now it would only confuse him more than he is.
10. We see vulnerability in Jazz through the dreams he is having of cutting flesh, that he believes is his mom...and thinking that he killed her. Do you think these are really flashbacks? If so, why?
--- I think that that is just a dream his subconcious formed based on the stories his father told him.
11. Enter Office Erikson once again, he comes from the town that one of the ladies was killed lived in, and we saw his behavior when he picked up Jazz from the high school. Why do you think G Williams isn't doing anything about this abnormal behavior and potential connections to the victim?
--- He may not know about it or he knows what Erikson is really doing in town.
12. EDIT: Question removed
13 I really enjoyed the first books in Cynthia Eden's Lost series Broken (LOST, #1) by Cynthia Eden
35559 DQ set 1: Chapters 1 - 8

1. What are your first impressions of Jazz? What is his motivation for spying on the crime scene and requesting to help investigate?
--- My impression is that he is a scared young man trying to keep the demons at bay. He is scared he might be like his dad and wants to help the police by showing that he may know more than them about serial killers.
2. "Ever since arresting Dear Old Dad four years ago, G. William had kept in touch with Jazz...". How would you characterize the relationship between Jazz and G. William? Why is the sheriff so adament about one body not meaning a serial killer? Is he trying to protect Jazz, himself, or both?
--- G. William may have assumed the role of mentor to Jazz as he is part of the reason that he has lost his father. He is trying to protect them both by refusing to think that a serial killer is responsible for the death in tge woods.
3. Howie has been the only friend who stayed with Jaspar after his father's exposure. Jaspar claims that he needs Howie to keep him "close to the line of safety and legality". Do you think Howie realizes what Jazz needs from him? Why doesn't he get angry when Jazz gets him into trouble?
--- Howie seems a little juvenike compared to Jazz and may see him as his only friend and that is why he goes along with him. Jazz is also his protector and stood for him when no one else did so he may think he owes him.
4. Deputy Erikson has caught Jazz's attention twice now with his behavior at the crime scene and his unexplained appearance at the morgue. Do you agree with Jazz's assessment of the deputy, or do you think there is a reasonable explanation for his actions?
--- He seems suspicious to me and there is mote going on with him and he is keeping a close eye on Jazz for some reason.
5. The Impressionist states he "had been given a rule" not to interact with or harm Jaspar. Who do you think might have given him that rule and why?
--- I hope it wasn't Billy or someone trying to impress him.
6. Jazz has the mantra, "People matter. People are real.", as a screensaver and pictures of all his father's victims in his room? Do you think this actually helps or hurts him? Is Connie right about letting go of the past?
--- I tnink that keeps him grounded and is important for his sanity. Connie is right and he may need to visit his father to start on closure.
7. "His upbringing... told him that women were simultaneously special and useless."
--- The 3 are special and useless to him as they help him function on a day to day basis but they cannot cure him.
