I've got a Jess book. the "character" is the author - it's a polemic type thing but with lots of personal experience, so I think it works as a memoir-adjacent book

I think that Holden Caulfield is the polarising factor - you either get on with his viewpoint or not. Cynicism, especially in a teen character, can be hard for some people to enjoy.
Keli wrote: "She is a terrible writer and cringey enough without sex scenes. I can't imagine the horror of added genitalia...."There's mostly been kissing, which involves detailed descriptions of tongues behind teeth (as in his behind her teeth) (as in "this is a sexy, sexxxxxxy kiss, and this description is super hot stuff"). I wish I were joking.
There's no rush on the steampunk! and IIRC, The Subtle Knife starts off with Will, not Lyra, so we catch up with events from Northern Lights in-book.
which of us is finally going to find a Steampunk they want to read?!I feel like people aren't writing steampunk anymore...
That's fine, I guess.I strongly do NOT recommend Iron Flame for anyone hoping for anything other than ridiculous angst (friendship and relationship), ridiculous pining and kissing and ridiculous (postponed) sex scenes....
ETA: forgot, you also need to be braced for even more super specialness from the heroine.
The best dragon has vanished from the book so far too...
Sophie wrote: "Right the 'romantasy' genre and I have issues. I like romance and I like fantasy. I quite happily read smut/erotica. What I object to is having a decent fantasy world and plot being derailed by incredible levels of teenage angst (even if the characters may be functionally immortal) and graphic sexual scenes. I like this things separately, but they are different categories of mood read for me and I struggle when the 2 are combined.."Agreed! I'm reading the second in the Fourth Wing series right now and I was HATING on the fake angst that the author created in order to build tension. And now she's half way through, so it's the "right" time for them to bang uglies and I am now HATING on the sex scenes... and the rest of it is all so stupid.
but it has dragons on the cover, which fits a couple of other challenge prompts, so there's that....

not Mel..... do you really want to risk me? - no!Sonia, if you're about still - go for it :)
otherwise I'll wait an hour and then spin for us - which should motivate someone to rescue us from that nightmare!
here's a question.....I'm now reading Memory, in which Miles is recovered from death (he was fully dead, had to have new heart and lungs and such grown whilst his body & brain were in cyro)
Count as "undead" even though he's in no way a zombie???
