35559 I've a couple of U books that I've been semi-hoarding:
Ex-Wife by Ursula Parrott (author, oldish title)
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1) by Michelle Hodkin (title, oldish title)

but not much more right now. :(
Oct 08, 2024 03:19AM

35559 it's an either/or, sadly :(

would we rather fill in the page count (given Wheels starting soon with its novel approach to encouraging length) or the setting?

I'm slightly minded to setting, I guess, knowing Sammy's proclivities!

35559 so.... I'm reading Cat's Eye, 512 pages, but also taking place in a cold climate (Canada, much is made of the snow and cold)

Thoughts on placement?

35559 Hello everyone! Welcome to this latest edition of Wheels, which is a case of back to the grindstone of dull reality after the mayhem of Hunger Games!

As always the first rule of Wheels is to have fun and be kind! (is that two rules? maybe, but they are equally important and go together!)
Most of the rest of them are tried and tested, but there are a couple of wrinkles this time, so do reread the official rules at some point.

The TL; DR is:
- points per page; books must be at least 100 pages (or an audio / wordcount minimum for "special" categories
- we'll be spelling out a word each round, using author, title, series & character initials (plus narrator and/or translator when applicable)
- books must be started after the countdown (info in team sheet), and finished in the round in which they are used

NEW!!!
Each reader has a personal book cap, based on their sign ups. The cap is in the official team sheet; going over the cap will result in PAIN, DAMAGE and DESTRUCTION, so we aren't going to do that! We'll have an overflow sheet for any excess books in each round, to tetris for maximum points

Bonus Points!
- for longer books
- for older books
- for BOMs

Admin
- captains are the only ones who get to add books to the official team sheet in post 1
- lovely Danielle will be working up a team sheet for everyone to add their books too, and that will be added to a post clearly marked
- you should be able to see the team sheet, but no write access
- if you don't want to add your books to the planner that's fine, just post a completion post with all the letters & reasons
- don't forget to add your books to your shelf. preferably only when you have started reading
- you are expected to check into the team at least once a week, so we know you are still about and playing. A quick post with progress report on your book (or latest TV binge) is fine. more frequent chats even better!
- if you have to reduce your reading / are going to go quiet / etc etc do let us know so we don't worry unduly (either the thread or directly as a PM to one of the captains or even to the mod account)

Anyway, onto the fun stuff:
- what useful letter books have you been saving all year for use in Wheels?
- what fun books are you looking forward to?
- how many books are you going to clear off the older shelves of your TBR?

35559 Sorry for the late post, got caught up with stuff yesterday, and ran out of time 😞
35559 Day 5: IX - Afterword

19. The last sections of the Artic story are hard reading. Why do you think Bradley included these sections, in general, and extended the story after Graham was abducted?

20. What was your reaction to the big reveal and unveiling of what was going on?

21. The ending is ambiguous. What do you imagine happening? Would you read a sequel?

22. In the vein of books being retold from another POV, who's POV would you want to read?

35559 SEVEN meetings?! that's not cool! I have a team meeting in the graveyard slot on Fridays, which is a nice wind-down to shutting off, but apart from that my day today is pretty clear. and it's a Friday, so mighty few drop-bys. Monday, however, is looking rammed :(

Tee hee! Brothers K would be a good one!

We were hoping that the bonus points would be helpful for the classics stuck on everyone's TBR. Fingers crossed

35559 I can say that the current BOM - The Ministry of Time - is a LOT of fun. I've also got Saint Death's Daughter (Saint Death, #1) by C.S.E. Cooney on the rack. Those are prob both before the challenge starts.

Coming up: Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? by Lizzie Damilola Blackburn ; A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher ; Ex-Wife by Ursula Parrott ; Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar ; We Will Not Be Saved A memoir of hope and resistance in the Amazon rainforest by Nemonte Nenquimo ; Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell
35559 DQs Day 2, III - Chapter Four (subbing for Judith)

5. If you were sent 300 years into the future from your current time, do you think you would be able to cope?
Do you think that having a better grasp of science and science fiction than the expats in our story have would prepare you for dealing with the unimaginable advancements you might encounter?

Almost certainly not! I like the views put forward of acceptance of sexuality from the expats, and the shock that "we" have such an interest in, and judgement of, who other people sleep with.

6. Is anyone else loving the fact that this author has a wonderful vocabulary? (Or at least knows how to navigate a thesaurus?)
I had to break out the dictionary for invigilating.
Are you learning any new words? (Anyone else want to add “angry Marmite” as a category for Restaurant Wars?)

Angry Marmite is a near perfect description of Guinness (don't @me!)
I'm loving the many office similes and such like, which gives a strong vibe of her home life. And made me think - we don't have hanging green files anymore. I'm a connection to that office technology, the way people when I first started work would wax lyrical about running payroll off punch cards, or my Dad talking about the mainframe computer room...

7. It isn’t explicitly explained, but do you get the impression that these 5 expats are not the first to be given asylum? Is the Brigadier from a slightly earlier time frame?

I am SO with you about the Brigadier - totally believe he's out of time too.

8. What exactly is this Ministry? Do you have a grasp on what they are trying to accomplish yet?

No idea. But something vaguely sinister.

9. What happened to Quentin, and what was the projectile weapon that Graham drew?

The drawing: is it someone from the future actually meddling with the past?
