35559 Good Morning from Texas!
As all I'm hooked on reading challenges and this will be my 6th Tower challenge as well. I mostly "read" audiobooks as it allows me to get chores done on my days off from work. I'm an Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist and work 2 days a week. Which allows me ample reading time!
I'm married and have 3 boys (YA) , 3 dogs and 2 cats. We live in a small town an hour outside of Dallas, Texas. Originally a Yankee, I grew up in Buffalo , NY.

Can't wait to get started reading for this challenge and getting to know you all better !

My Uno Shelf is: TowerMuse
35559 I’m in for the read

This will be my first by Stephenson but I’ve been eyeing most of those titles ☺️ I tend to pick those quick ones first 🤣

I hope everyone has a safe and happy remainder of their summer!

Hey Erin,
I'm an Occupational therapist and have worked with stroke patients over the years (over 25 years). do you know if he will be getting OT? They can issue him a splint for his hand to prevent contractures. Also , you and/or mom can perform stretching exercises to that hand... and continue to encourage him to use that hand, even if it's awkward or only an assist.
Please feel free to message me if you have any questions. Been thinking of you...

35559 Erin I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. I hope he resolves and gains more movement/function, it’s still early and therapy will help a ton. Sending positive vibes ❤️

35559 hey gang, I added 4 books to our list. I am not sure if any are repeats, because our used books are hidden. I checked our main spreadsheet, so I think (hope) all will count!
Hope everyone had a good and productive weekend :D

Jul 02, 2021 09:32PM

35559 I definitely speed up my audiobooks! I usually start at 1.25 and once I’m more familiar with the story I increase the speed . Sometimes I go up to 2.5 (middle school/ YA books)
Depending on the genre too. 😆

35559 Erin your so good! I haven’t had a chance to look at tasks, those look great! I appreciate your help in finding places for my books ☺️
35559 DQs Day 3 Chapters 16 - 23

11. Gramma Pearl shared many wonderful legacy stories with Daunis. I loved the reference Daunis makes regarding the storm and the thunderbirds bringing loved ones from the other world to check on them. As a result, Daunis has happy memories about storms versus being afraid and she consistently refers to Gramma Pearl when deciding what to do. Do you have any advice, stories or traditions passed down from family that you often think about?
Something that you would share with your legacy...if so, share if you are comfortable.
~~~ I liked the thunderbirds story, it was good way to keep children from being afraid of storms. The only "wives tales" or stories I can think of are always the typical. For thunderstorms, "God is bowling" And of course, counting between lightning and thunder to see how far away storms were.
12. "The FBI is interested in learning what caused the group hallucination. I want to know if the kids are okay." Daunis obviously thinks the FBI isn't investigating for the right reasons. I observe all the time that young people have a different view on things than more experienced/older people. Who's right? What do we learn from situations such as this? Other thoughts?
I think teachers have the best insight on how teens/kids think. I do forget so often how naive and gullable I was at that age. But as a mom of an 18 and 2 19year olds, daily I am reminded of their narrow experiences and how much they can't apply facts to life experiences, and I mean this in the most positive way. From something as simple as mailing a letter, to registering for college classes.
13. Heather is clearly not liked amongst the girls at the beach party...why do you think Heather approaches Daunis about buying drugs? Do you think this has something to do with why she turns up dead, washed up at Duck Island?
I think Heather assumes that Daunis dabbles in drugs because of her best friend's boyfriend Travis.
14. In chapter 20, Jamie asks Daunis about the meaning of 'Firekeeper's Daughter'. It's her job to lift up the sun every day. What do you think about this explanation? Do you find additional meaning in this as it relates to Daunis and her role in the plot of this story?
It was an interesting explanation, quite an ontaking though for a young girl to feel like she has such a responsibility. Unfortunately , Daunis does seem to load herself down with too many worries in her life. From family to friends and now a murder/drug investigation. A bit unrealistic if you ask me...
15. Daunis finds Heather during her mushroom sleuthing on Duck Island. During her thinking she has an 'ah-ha' moment regarding her Uncle's journals. When she goes to look for them, she's quick to assume that they don't exist because of the connection to the FBI and the confidentiality required...do you think she's right...thoughts?
I think she will have to use some more sleuthing skills to find them.. I have a feeling they wouldn't be in plain sight either way.
35559 DQs Day 3: The Tree That Is Our Life - Wild and Free (59%)
11. Regarding the system error, that occurred when Nora tried to return to the library after that speech. Do you think Nora could have trouble returning to the library from one of the next lives that she visits?
It definitely made me nervous for Nora. I am thinking each time she tries to return it will get harder and harder. Maybe one time she won't return?
12. But you will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life. (p. 151) Do you think Nora is going to "find the meaning of life", "be happy forever in a parallel life", or "will want to die and leave the library forever"?
I'm thinking Nora will just learn to settle for a life, but of course that can't be how the book continues, right? so as I'm hoping for a happy ending I will say she will "be happy forever in a parallel life"
13. Are you surprised about Nora meeting Hugo, another Slider, as he calls people like them in the in-between?
Yes! I thought that was a neat little twist by the author. Although it did make me sad that he had been "sliding" for so long.
14. For Nora it's a library, for Hugo it's a video store. What do you imagine would your variant of the in-between be? (And obviously you are not allowed to say library now, because I'm guessing most of us would go with that answer. Be creative and let me know what else you would feel comfortable with.)
Ok, so it isn't a library but it would be a BOOKSTORE, HA! I can browse through a bookstore for hours just looking at book covers and authors.
15. We finally get to see Nora's life as a rock star. In what direction do you think this will go? Is it going to be the life Nora is happiest with and stays the longest/forever? Or do you think that she's going to leave it rather soon again?
I rather think her rock star life will be the most dramatic and tragic... not many happy rock stars right?
