35559 DQ: 18 May - Sugi and Chikako's Hotel for Pets & Between Friends

9) Considering Satoru seems to be quite perceptive overall, do you think he knew about Sugi’s less charitable feelings about him, both in the past and during this visit?

I am sure he suspected it but was less likely to want to believe it.

10) So far, the chapters have all been combining Satoru and Nana’s journey with Satoru’s past with several other people, as well as their backgrounds. How do you feel about this interlude (chapter 3.5) focused entirely on the man and his cat? What does it add to the story?
I think this is an important part to the book , giving us a bit more insight into their relationship.

11) For the first time, we got a hint of what’s going on with Satoru when the dog said “he smells like he isn’t going to make it” in chapter 3, and this came up again in chapter 3.5. So it sounds like Satoru is ill… was that your prediction for question 4?
Yes, I suspected it all along as he has been so secretive with what is going on.

12) Squabbles between cats and dogs were really present in these sections. So: Are you a cat person or a dog person or both (or neither)?
I love both for different reasons.... Dogs are just so much more lovable (at least mine are) and they really seem to love no matter what. My cats are so easy and laid back, you can have a bunch and they aren't ever as needy as dogs. However, I seem to always get the finicky type, "please only pet my head lady!"... I had a sweet ginger cat who disappeared ... he was the sweetest I've had and I'm hoping someone has him in their house and is loving on him.
35559 DQ: 17 May - The Unsentimental Farmer

5) I really like reading the cat's thoughts. It can be quite funny. Do you think these are convincing cat thoughts?

I do like our cat Nana and absolutely agree with the cats thoughts. The only part I don't believe as strongly is how well Satoru can read his cat's thoughts.

6) In this chapter we are introduced to Yoshimine, another potential owner for our cat. What do you think of him and his backstory?
He seemed to have lead an interesting life. And definitely doesn't seem like an animal lover or pet owner.

7) Do you think Yoshimine would have been a good owner for Nana ?
No, I think Nana is way too particular for this fella. I think he would take great care of Nana, but wouldn't really love her/him as much as needed.

8) Yoshimine has already a kitten called Chatran, and Satoru makes fun of him for naming his cat with such a cliché name. What is for you the most cliché cat name(s)? In french it is quite common to call a cat Chaussette (meaning sock), Mistigri or Felix (actually a cat food brand).
Ha! I love this question! We also call cats socks, I had a sneakers. Other common names in US: Ginger, Garfield, Snowball, Tabby, Bella, Kitty, Oreo, Sophie, Tiger, Midnight, Mittens, Boots, Minnie... that's all I can think of right now.
35559 DQs 16 May: Prologue - The Husband Without a Wife

1. How are you liking the way the story is written with its alternating POVs ? Is there a POV you prefer ?

I think it suits the story well. I'm good with the change in POV, it seems pretty obvious in who is narrating.

2. Through the flashbacks we get to know Satoru's personality a bit more. What do you make of him so far ? What did you think about his way of helping his friend Kosuke?
Satoru seems to be a kind person, one to keep to himself. I'm assuming he has a history which has molded him this way.

3. Talking about Kosuke, what's up with his parents ? It seemed to me that Kosuke was genuinely convinced that his father would agree to keep the cat (Hachi). What did you think about his backstory ?
They seem so odd. I wasn't sure if it is the culture possibly? Different cultures are warmer or colder to animals and people. Maybe it is acceptable in this culture?

4. Why do you think Satoru can't take care of Nana anymore ?
I'm assuming he is dying... unfortunately. But I cannot imagine another reason that he wouldn't straight away tell his friends.

35559 BOTM question....

I was able to borrow The Travelling Cat Chronicles audiobook from my library. The loan ends before the start date. Can I read it before we start and still participate? Or should I try to return and re-borrow?
