35559 Day 1 Questions: June 22nd - Chapter 1

1. I love the first line of this book, “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” What do you think? Did it draw you in right away? Do you think it sets the tone for the book?
It did make me more interested in the book and at least I had an idea on what the book was all about because the summary didn't reveal much information about the plot.

2. Why do you think the Gunslinger is chasing the man in black? Will he catch him? What will he do if / when he does?
Maybe the Man in Black is some kind of criminal or murderer. I think he'll be able to catch him since he said that his footprints are more recent the farther he followed him. I only have the barest idea of who they are so I have no idea what the Gunslinger'd do.

3. What do you think of the world building or the world the story is set in? I find it interesting that there are so many differences and yet some similarities to our world, like the singing of “Hey Jude.” It feels a bit like our world has seeped into theirs.
It sounds post apocalyptic, but with a historical setting. All I've seen (or read) is the desert so I'm not sure about the world, but it did have a feel of our earth, mostly from the songs.

4. What or who do you think the man in black is? He certainly seems to have some special powers, but with evil undertones. Any ideas yet?
Nope, no clue at all. I can only guess. Murderer maybe, or someone hoping to rule the world

5. Why do you think the townsfolk were so anti-gunslinger? Was it just because of what he represents as a gunslinger, because he’s a stranger, or because of the man in black? Some other reason?
Could be a mix of all three of them or maybe gunslingers have gathered up a bad reputation, but I think it's more of the man in black's influence.

6. What do you think of what happened in Tull? Was there another way for the gunslinger to leave the town without the destruction that occurred or do you think it was necessary or predestined? When Brown asked him if he felt bad about it, the gunslinger said, “Why would I feel bad?” Do you think that’s just because of his training or maybe he believed there was no other way or maybe he just lacks empathy for the death of others?
I don't know much about their world, so I'm not sure. It's a bit extreme to have to kill everyone, but he probably thought it necessary to do so if he wanted to stay alive. His lack of any emotion may be that he's used to killing since he is a gunslinger. He didn't know the people well so that could be a reason. Plus, technically it wasn't his fault if they were charging at him like rabid dogs with weapons. There was nothing else he could've done. There was too many of them to focus on just injuring them.

7. What do you think of the story so far? Anything you particularly like or don’t like?
I don't know what to think of the book. I still have little clue on what's happening. I'm having trouble getting into it. Things seem detached and the world can be unsettling.

35559 July 2 Discussion questions & comments
Chapters 1-6

1. Have you read anything by Ruth Ware before? Why did you decide to join this read?
No, I haven't read anything by her until now. This book has been on my radar for a while now as I love mysteries and I've seen many other people read this.

2. I have the impression that Lo suffered panic attacks and slight claustrophobia even before the break-in. Do you think there's much more to her past than we've been told so far?
Yes, I also had that impression. And judging by Judah's reaction to her in his house, that wasn't the first time so I'm assuming he knows about it too. Maybe she'd meet someone from her past and recall some bad experiences?

3. Theories on the break-in? Does a burglar wear latex gloves and lock the occupant of the house in their bedroom while ransacking the place? How would he know she didn't have a phone in her room? Seems there's more going on here than a simple burglary.
He probably planned the burglary for a while, if he really knew that her phone is usually in her purse. If he didn't, then he's pretty lucky. There could be something more to it, but it could be for spooking us from the very start. Like a taste.

4. I can't quite imagine the boat. She said it isn't much bigger than a yacht and yet the descriptions make it sound quite large. Your thoughts?
I can imagine the individual rooms, but as a whole, it's hard to imagine. But she did say that the rooms are also pretty small, so maybe furniture and decors are small in size.

5. Ok stupid question, but would you borrow mascara from someone?! (What a way to get an eye infection!) And also on this very expensive ship full of rich people the lady gives her Maybelline mascara which is a realtively cheap brand. A clue she doesn't belong there perhaps?
I generally would never borrow any kind of makeup from anyone, but she's a desperate journalist wanting to look her best in front of rich people. And that's a sneaky clue! I didn't think much of it.

6. Have you ever been so overly tired but not able to sleep? Do you think Lo is paranoid due to her lack of sleep and anxiety or is there someone watching her?
Not really, no. If I'm completely worn down, I'd fall asleep almost immediately. And yep, I think that's one of the reasons, that she also has nightmares about the burglary.

7. Do you like the writing style? Is it an effective way to build suspense by using the emails to give us a glimpse in the future before going back to present day?
I'm ok with it. I was a bit confused at first because things on Lo's side and Judah's side weren't correlating like with the emails. And then realized that there was something going on and I wanted to know just what is going on in the ship.
