35559 I wanted to add two more recommendations since I like novellas:
Binti: The Complete Trilogy and American Hippo. Both can be read as a single book (and counted for TTs) and are great stories.

35559 Joyce wrote: "I've got a question. I am further along in the Discworld series than the books of the month. Do they still count as BOM points?"

No, only those three count as BOM with the extra points. I will be rereading all three for this challenge. However, as the tasks were made from the books, you may find some of the tasks fit the specific Discworld book.

35559 Thank you Snowtulip, the BOM is a reread so it should not be bad but that makes me less stressed. Also, I saw you added Elatsoe to the SS. I love that book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

35559 Also, if anyone wants to sign up for backup for BOM questions for Equal Rites, I would be very grateful. You would only be necessary if something happens where I can't write questions for my day. It is the week of my PhD defense and Judith can't write any as she has read the book too recently. You have to have someone signed up for backup before days are picked and can't add someone later.

35559 Feel free to start claiming tasks on the tracking spreadsheet for planning. Just as Judith noted, be aware of how much you personally read. My usual guideline is don't claim more than you read in a week or two (be that one book or 10).

I have a few library books that I am getting grumpy emails from the library about that I am trying to read between now and May 15 when fines start back up.
35559 Just adding I have my PhD defense on May 25 so can I not have that day.

35559 Redshirt, the three I am trying to get to are:

I Am Princess X - not actually a comic but MPG Graphic Novel so needs to be read before TTs
Aya: Life in Yop City - actual comic
The Down River People - I have an ARC and actual comic

Also, love Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

35559 Keely, I read Goodnight Mr. Tom as my summer reading before starting freshman year of high school. I have not thought about the book in ages.

Snowtulip, we seem to have very similar reading tastes so I will move Migrations up my TBR as I enjoyed your other two recommendations quite a bit.

Also, on a side note, my first graduate degree was from NCSU so yay to more NC folks (I was in Raleigh for 4 years).

Truitt, which series of S K Dunstall's would you recommend starting with? Also, I tend to like books that can stand alone even if they are in a series, like the Wayfarer series.

Finally, seconding if you have any questions feel free to ask in the thread. We know TTs can be confusing, and I never mind checking word counts on books so you don’t get told we can’t use it after the fact.

(On that note, I have at least two comics I need to read before TT starts).

35559 Answering Questions:
What does it mean by a days' worth?
BOM are split into sections and the person who has that section has to post some questions. Answering one set of questions for a section of the book is a day so you have to answer at least three sections. It means you do not have to answer all the questions.

Can a single book be utilized for the story, bingo, and page numbers sheets on the Gdoc?
Every book is used for page numbers and then one other category: tasks, bingo, or story

I've read through this page, but if anyone has any pointers on where to start, I would greatly appreciate it!

Now that we have everyone, Judith or one of us co-captains will discuss the general rules for books. Then, the big rule to start with is don't start books before the May 1 start date and we can help you figure it from there.

35559 Yay, Murderbot!! I recommend it to complete strangers and friends (hence why Judith knows I love it). It is tied for my all-time favorite series. I cannot wait for the next one in a few days. My other favorite recommendations are The House in the Cerulean Sea and The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet series (I adore the most recent one).

Recently, I have also enjoyed Winter's Orbit and The Thirty Names of Night.

35559 That is great, everyone, and I agree with Judith that the majority of points are page points. Also, for anyone who played TT before, the page points are now standardized (100-1000 pages), so no more points per a page for giant books. If you need any help checking word count for Children's/Middle Grade or plays etc., feel free to ask here.

Also, most books will fit anywhere, but if you like to read to challenges, which I think is fun, the tasks are the most specific and are a good place to start as a team.

Skandia, I am partial to both Mort and Guards! Guards! as starting points. I think the Guards series is the strongest but I am looking forward to rereading the Witches series, as I am older since some of that may have gone over my head as a child. If you like YA, start with The Wee Free Men, which is also a brilliant audio book. Actually, I like all of them as audio books, and I am not generally an audio book fan.

35559 I support the three BOMs for the points but I enjoyed and personally started with The Color of Magic, though that is a less popular opinion. (Also, I think I was in middle school the first time I read Discworld). It is July's BOM but the Guards series are my favorite sub-series and that is a good place to start too.

35559 My library too. It means one of us can claim it for the book with two titles task.

Also, if you are a slower reader or want to take your time, once we officially start TT on May 1, BOMs can be started early as well. I would suggest this for the last BOM since it starts less than 10 days before TT ends.

35559 Perfect timing, I was just going to come post on Books of the Month (BOM). I will also post this at the top of the thread. They do not start until specific dates as listed below, but I know lots of people, including me, need to get in the library que.

The BOM are for the larger NBRC group but since the points are really good, most everyone will be on a TT team. There are three each month: one YA, one adult, and one Discworld. We know the ones for May and all three Discworld ones. The nominations are open for June (see link below), and I will post the June polls when they open.

BOM Points:
Writing a day's worth of discussion questions = 40 points
Participating in a current BOM = 20 points

Participation means answering at least three of the DQ days over the course of the BOM discussion
Points stack, i.e. if a player is picked to write a set of questions AND answers at least three of the question sets they will gain 60 points
There is no limit to the number of team members who can get participation points

You have one month from the start date to read and answer questions.

May - Equal Rites ( Discussion Thread - starts May 22), The Foundling (AKA The Lost Orphan - Discussion Thread – May 2) and Dumplin' (Discussion Thread - May 16)
June - Mort (June 22), TBD, TDB
July - Guards! Guards! (July 22), TDB, TDB

June Nominations
YA June Nominations
Adult June Nominations

If you have any interest in the books, it is a great way to get points and read new books. The 20 points really add up if team members participate.

35559 Hi all, My name is Lexi (she/her/hers). I live in Massachusetts, USA (EST) ,and I’m defending my PhD in the end of May in Zoonotic Diseases. Then, I will likely be moving to somewhere else. I especially enjoy fantasy/sci-fi and mysteries and am trying to read authors from a wider range of countries this year. This is my 4th TT plus I was an alt for Wobble.

My shelf is: TT2021

I have read all the Discworld books if anyone has any questions on that front.

Also, just a reminder that all books must be started after TT starts, so lots of time to finish any that you have already started.

35559 One of the Good Ones by Maika Moulite
One of the Good Ones by Maika Moulite
The Hate U Give meets Get Out in this honest and powerful exploration of prejudice in the stunning novel from sister-writer duo Maika and Maritza Moulite, authors of Dear Haiti, Love Alaine.

ISN'T BEING HUMAN ENOUGH?

When teen social activist and history buff Kezi Smith is killed under mysterious circumstances after attending a social justice rally, her devastated sister Happi and their family are left reeling in the aftermath. As Kezi becomes another immortalized victim in the fight against police brutality, Happi begins to question the idealized way her sister is remembered. Perfect. Angelic.

One of the good ones.

Even as the phrase rings wrong in her mind—why are only certain people deemed worthy to be missed?—Happi and her sister Genny embark on a journey to honor Kezi in their own way, using an heirloom copy of The Negro Motorist Green Book as their guide. But there's a twist to Kezi's story that no one could've ever expected—one that will change everything all over again.
