I simply won't succumb to the idea of a worldolopolis. I don't live in that world. I therefor do not acknowledge that it is the dominant paradigm. Sanity will prevail eventually. Dammit.

I can sympathize with them. I ran a music company with my ex husband and it was incredibly expensive and time consuming to produce albums, market and distribute them. I began to see why artists only get 10% royalties on their sales. Record companies take all the financial risk and have to deal with the crappy end of the business, while musicians are out getting laid, getting high, and having fun playing music. I think the book industry is much the same. Publishing companies are creating physical objects which they have to store and sell. Entire lives and livelihoods are built up around them. Power and money and survival. To retool the entire industry, and to flush down the toilet a whole set of jobs (printers, storage, distributors, retail venues, paper makers, etc)... well, it's a huge change. If you want to see how insane people can get around it just look at what has gone on inside the record industry. Hopefully no one will get shot in the book business. Ha ha ha... book gangstas.

wow... I guess I'm not surprised that it's instantly so politicized. The world is changing fast fast fast. But if all electricity suddenly were unavailable... I still have my old paper books. And a tree to sit under.

So, has anybody tried this new gadget out?
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00154JDAI/?...I don't read well on line, and I love actual books, but I'm starting to become tempted nonetheless, mostly out of curiosity. Any cautionary tales? Cranky comments against e-reading? Excitement? Beuhler?

Hi Leslie... thanks for dropping in!

I find loud noises soporific, apparently.

I watched the programs on the History Channel last night about Einstein and the Big Bang. Anyone else see them? So fabulous!!! I fell asleep during the Big Bang though.... I hope they show it again!!!

YAY KEPLER!!!!! That launch WAS pretty damn exciting!! It worked and nothing broke!!! I can't wait to see if it finds a blue-green planet like ours. How exciting would that be?? Someplace new we could screw up. Oops, I mean, inhabit.
: D

NB... for the record my business partner, who raised five boys in California who all went to public schools, and then she worked as an attorney here inside the school system, agrees with you about the root cause of our public school ills. She says that the Teachers Union is a huge part of the problem, and that a main part of the rest of the problem rest with liberals. So, there you go, she's fairly liberal, so you have someone in agreement who is from another camp.
For myself, I have to say my view is that the entire system has become needlessly labyrinthine and complicated. There is some serious paring down that needs to happen. She also agreed that too much of the money goes to the management and not enough to the school, so I was also right.
Now if we could just get the public school system to do what we tell them.

that's why I have my SCUBA gear.

Well there you go. The Gnostic Christ is very similar to a radioactive vagina. I wasn't entirely wrong. :::::puts on her giant condom and clicks away repeatedly:::
heh.

Todd... I hate to be the one to tell you but.... your avatar looks like a giant, glowing vagina. I'm too afraid to click on it to find out if I'm right.

Hi Kate, welcome to Axis.
Yeah, I have to agree with Sherrie. That sounds fishy to me. But then again, people can get away with anything until someone makes them stop.
The whole health care situation makes me quite nervous. I feel lucky to have a great doctor. Now if I could just get some health insurance.

by the way, why do you think I'm arguing with you? Come on, the Turettes thing was hysterical. Admit it.

NB.... Bison Stroganoff with Apricot Yogurt. Leftover Kraft Macaroni and Cheese re-baked with canned salmon and frozen corn, topped with Ketchup. Whole wheat, organic, sugar-free Pop Tarts, unwarmed, straight from the package. With frozen grapefruit juice.
I've never been to the Middle East, NB, but somehow I manage to be capable of both gathering information about it, weighing the information, and forming opinions based on my own value system.
Gee, that chip looks heavy.
