2059 "Defenders of the Reich: The Luftwaffe’s War against America’s Bombers" - Some German Luftwaffe commanders weren't all that happy with how some of their colleagues performed during the Schweinfurt raid:

"In a mood of equal frustration, Oberstleutnant Priller was moved to register a complaint with Galland's staff about the combat effectiveness of III./JG 1, whose Bf 109s, led by Hauptmann Olejnik, had intercepted the bombers just as the escorting fighters, at the limit of their range, turned back over the Belgian-German border. Olejnik recalled the situation leading to 'interminable discussions'. Priller had noted how JG 1 failed to make a concerted mass attack, preferring only to pick on lone 'stragglers' - they were 'easier' prey. Priller denounced such tactics as those of 'corpse looters'."

Drastic drop in supplies for the German army in Italy. Good to read that the sacrifice of so many airmen had some effect on ground operations.
2059 Thanks for posting those details, Mike, much appreciated.

2059 "Defenders of the Reich: The Luftwaffe’s War against America’s Bombers" - The author mentioned that at the start of the Allied daylight raids that a number of German aircraft factories formed their own factory defence flights:

"Focke-Wulf chief test pilot Flugkapitan Hans Sander recalled:

'Between test-flying aircraft, we Focke-Wulf test pilots had to fly service fighters in action when our factory was attacked by Allied bombers, and we knocked up quite a score in the process, although we lost several good test pilots in this way'."

2059 "Defenders of the Reich: The Luftwaffe’s War against America’s Bombers" - The Luftwaffe started developing tactics for the best way to bring down a heavy bomber like the B-17:

"When a pilot was executing a head-on attack, it was calculated that, on average, it required 20 hits with 20mm shells from an MG 151/20 to bring down a heavy bomber. As the fighter closed in on its target, the combined approach speed would be approximately 805 km/h ay 183 m per second, and this allowed only a half-second burst from the fighter before it would forced to break away in order to avoid a collision with the bomber."

2059 "1942: When World War II Engulfed the Globe" - The last quote from this book, in regard to how deadly it was for Russian civilians caught on the frontlines between the Germans and Soviet forces:

"In one instance, a peasant made the decision to join the partisans, who suspected his motives and shot him as a German spy. When security forces learned of his fate, they executed the peasant's wife and five young children as a 'partisan family'."
