201765 I just sold an article on marketing to SCBWI for an upcoming issue of their "BULLETIN." If you're not familiar with this organization, you might want to take a tour of their Website:

https://www.scbwi.org/

BTW, they have a major conference coming up in Los Angeles, CA, this July:

201765 "...she wrote the review based on what she 'supposed' happened."

Ah, yes...the "intentional error." The "intent" imposed by the reader, who believes he or she knows exactly what the author intended.

It's happened to all of us. Reviewers, as do all readers, bring a suitcase of "baggage" with them to our books...what they "read" into our prose depends on their upbringing, culture, what side of the bed they got up on, you-name-it. Some simply "don't get it." Others see things that make you wonder what they are smoking (and why they aren't sharing it!).

Frankly, there is no accounting for some reviews. I had one mystery novel that garnered 12 5-Star, two 2-Star, and ONE 1 Star reviews. The latter reflected the view of a person who just couldn't "get into the book."

It happens. You can't be all things to all people.

Anna, my wife and I would not miss any of the TV shows you mentioned. She regularly fills up the DVR with them. They are simply the best. On this side of the Pond, we favor Fargo, House of Cards, Better Call Saul, and a host of others too numerous to mention. So many opportunities, so little time.

201765 I teach mystery writing at the local high school as a guest lecturer (my YA novel, The Hypnotist, written under the pen name Alyssa Devine, is part of the school's Core Genre (Mystery) English Program; I gave 40 classes last year). If you're going to the trouble of writing a mystery, my suggestion is to make the crime a murder...preferably several!

I've changed mine, from time to time...usually to hone the category on which I want to focus. Sometime steering things towards a more uncrowded category can help to raise your book's ranking among its peers. Definitely difficult to make your voice heard above the crowd these days, no doubt about it.

201765 Here's an interesting article that sheds some light on the topic. I did not purchase the offering, but did find what was said (written) helpful.

I don't do paint well...ask my poor suffering wife of 53 years. She's only let me live this long (she tells me) because she's not "done" with me yet.

LOL...they must have heard us...the book's page just updated...the rank "fell" from more than 500,000 to a little over 16,000, with it being 22 in Short Stories.

Wonder if Amazon was having computer problems?

201765 Just received this from the Kindle Direct agent:

The Amazon Bestsellers Rank shows how items are selling in relation to one another in each Amazon marketplace. The ranking is further divided into Free and Paid lists within each Kindle Store.

We base rank calculations on Amazon sales and update them hourly to reflect newer and historical sales of every item sold on each website. Recent sales are weighted more heavily. The Bestsellers Rank is relative and may change even when there are no sales of a book, or may not change when there have been new sales. For example, if you were to sell a copy of your book and the rest of the books in the store happen to be selling more often than normal, your Bestsellers Rank may not change.

While monitoring your book’s Amazon sales rank may be helpful in gaining general insight into the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns and other initiatives to drive book sales, it is not an accurate way to track your book’s sales or pages read. Neither is it an accurate way to compare your sales in relation to books in other categories, since a particular item’s sales rank does not absolutely reflect its sales or Kindle Unlimited (KU) / Kindle Owners’ Lending Library (KOLL) activity.
------------------------------

My comment: 50 sales in a small category (literary fiction, short stories) should move the ranking number lower, not higher. Full Stop.

After eight years of publishing books on Amazon, one gets to know the smell of BS when one smells it.

201765 Has anyone pulled their hair out over delays in Amazon's updating of their books' rankings?

Have sold more than 50 books already this morning on my ENT Book Of The Day sale, and the ranking number went UP since the day started. It makes no sense at all. The people at Author Central and Kindle Direct don't have a clue and simply parrot the party line ("Well, it's based on a complex formula, it will update hourly, blah, blah, blah...")

Some support! (NOT) What's your experience?
201765 Just got this note from Ron at ENT:

Hi Ted,

Your book, The Road Less Taken: A Collection of Unusual Short Stories (Book 2), has been posted as the Book Of The Day. Here's the link:

http://ereadernewstoday.com/book-of-t...

You should send this link to all of your social media accounts so that it gets as much exposure as possible.

Also, let all your fans know about the ENT Facebook post and ask them to "LIKE" and comment on it - and please feel free to do so yourself also. More "likes" and comments on the Facebook post generates more traffic and sales.

Thanks, and have a great day!

201765 This morning, Liz Carr (Penny Minding Mom) sent me a video book review of my illustrated children's book, Rufus Finds a Home. The review, which was done by her son, Johah, also included a craft project for children.

Here's the URL she sent to me:

https://youtu.be/NkXcbjyoLks

I'm sure it will play if you click on it or paste it into your browser.

What it would NOT do is post to my Goodreads list of videos because they only accept videos in one format...the one shown in the format below (which is what you will see when you play the URL above):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkXcb...

See the difference? Just something of which to be aware before you tear the rest of your hair out (and believe me, I don't have that much more to spare!).
