20116 I hope you enjoy it Scott and it takes your mind of the issues outside your front door.
20116 I decided to read; "The Anatomy of Glory: Napoleon and His Guard" as my theme book since it was a birthday gift in 1998, its about time I read it :)

Nice one Betsy, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Charge! Great Cavalry Charges of the Napoleonic Wars by Digby Smith Charge!: Great Cavalry Charges of the Napoleonic Wars by Digby Smith
20116 I have to make a choice between these two titles for this month's theme:

Riflemen The History of the 5th Battalion, 60th (Royal American) Regiment - 1797-1818 by Robert Griffith Riflemen: The History of the 5th Battalion, 60th (Royal American) Regiment - 1797-1818 by Robert Griffith

The Anatomy of Glory Napoleon and His Guard by Henri Lachouque The Anatomy of Glory: Napoleon and His Guard by Henri Lachouque

Or I could try and fit them both in :)

What do others have in mind for their theme book?

20116 Hi everyone, the August theme read page is open and ready for comment and discussion. The theme is any book or books of your choice, which can include novels, that covers a Napoleonic unit history and/or Napoleonic Cavalry:

20116 Those are pretty staggering statistics MR9, no wonder many young men equated a posting to the tropics as more like a death sentence!
20116 Me too MR9 :)
20116 A very interesting post MR9. I think that's the first time I've heard of Britain purchasing slaves for their army.
20116 I have a copy of "Death before Glory" waiting to be read MR9. I hope its a good book, keep us all posted.

Perfect response!

20116 I do like this quote; "He once granted an officer leave to spend forty-eight hours in Lisbon on the grounds that that was as long as any reasonable man might wish to stay in bed with the same woman..."

20116 That's a very good question MR9 and I don't have an answer off the top of my head. I will try and check the first volume of Rory Muir's two book-set on Wellington and see what he has to say.

20116 Sounds like it will be an excellent read MR9, nice addition to the French section of your library :)

20116 That's a good one MR9 and to be honest I have no idea, its not a subject I have looked at.

Two interesting books, nice additions to your library :)
20116 I tend to agree with that observation in regards to Napoleon's family, they did seem to be a bunch of money-grabbers a lot of the time!
20116 Interesting post MR9, that Stendhal had a very critical eye and a sharp pen eh!
