Joanna - I really like the suggestion idea, more of a guideline than actual rule. I think that's the best way to handle the number of nominations. I'll try next month ad we'll see how it goes!
Joanna and Iethe - the idea of making the cutoff the number of seconds as opposed to picking the top 5 most seconded books is really interesting. I'm still wary of voter dispersion but I think we could definitely try this out and see how it goes. Some trial and error!
It sounds like everyone prefers there being more than 4-5 books in the BOTM polls. Do others have suggestions on how to handle? Should we make it the top 8-10 most seconded books as opposed to 5? Or should we set a number-of-seconds cutoff as suggested by Joanna? As in every book with 4+ seconds makes the polls? If so, what should that cutoff be?

1) About shortening the time - I like this idea. Very easy to implement, simple to understand and follow for members. Just not sure how much it will change the outcome. I find that the majority of nominations/seconds happen in the first week to two weeks of a month (70 out of 90 comments as an example) so I don't think it'll end up being a huge change in number of nominations, but again very easy to do. This is where I'm leaning... I think.
2) Regarding limiting number of nominations - I go both ways on this. I like the idea because it may cut down number of nominations and people would nominate books they are most passionate about reading as opposed to a laundry list. On the flip side, this is harder to keep track of without being very manual, and I anticipate people "taking back" or trying to replace a nomination in favor of another which will be even harder to track. And what do we do if people have already seconded a book someone wants to swap out for a nomination they favor more? Lastly, I kind of like the nomination process being very open-ended because we get a lot of variety of contributions... I don't necessarily want to put up more guard rails around this process if we don't have to.
3) Regarding themes - I love the idea of themes, I definitely want to do more. Ironically, the nomination threads for "Nonfiction" were the longest we've had thus far. I don't anticipate that always being the case, but regardless I think we should continue to have themed months. As previously discussed in this thread, I don't necessarily want to make every month a themed month/would like to have at least every other month have no theme so folks can nominate whatever they want if themes don't align with their reading interests.
4) Regarding the timeline - I'm hesitant to change this. Right now we have nomination threads and then voting. I feel like a round of nominations, then a round of seconds, then voting is a lot. Some groups simplify the process by including every book that is seconded in their BOTM polls. I don't love this either because it usually means 20+ books are in the polls and there is a ton of voter dispersion, but I'm curious to hear what others think about this. We started tracking the number of seconds in the BOTM threads in order to cut down the number of books in the polls, but would people prefer to just have every eligible book included in polls?
As always, thank you all very much for your thoughts and feedback. Always looking for ways to improve the group and everyone's experience here. Thanks again!

Totally fine!
