186083 Crystal Cove

1. In the previous installments, the magic was far more subtle than in Crystal Cove where it comes to the fore. The book has a much stronger PNR vibe. Did you enjoy this or would you have preferred the lighter touch of magic realism?

2. Jason is described as "a man without a soul". Did you originally think the author meant this literally or figuratively? What did you think of the way this aspect of his character was portrayed?

3. Justine in a natural born witch but seems to have rejected her heritage and has no control over her powers. What did you think of this?

4. Did you enjoy the romance between Jason and Justine? Was it easy to identify with them emotionally?

5. Kleypas diverges from her usual path with the sex scenes. Were they over the top or did they work with Jason and Justine's characters?

6. Some readers have compared Jason to Harry Rutledge from the Hathaways series. Do you see the similarities or is this way off base?

7. Did anyone else keep recalling the plot of Practical Magic (Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman) while reading about the Witch's Bane?

8. Justine's mother, Marigold, placed a spell on her daughter to prevent her from falling in love. Sage and Rosemary believed it was done out of love but Justine is convinced her mother did it to control her. What do you think?

9. Marigold is presented as a bitter, cold woman who is willing to allow her daughter to die in order to teach her a lesson. Do you think Marigold was always this way or did her life experiences make her like this?

10. Sage and Rosemary fulfill the mothering role that Justine is lacking from her own mother. What did you think of them and their relationship with Justine?

11. What did you think of the way the Witch's Bane is resolved? Do you believe in Soul Mates?

12. Jason's initial interest in Justine stems from wanting to get his hands on the grimoire. He eventually "borrows" the book. What did you think of his motivation and his actions?

13. Priscilla is very dedicated to her job. What did you think of her character and the lengths she was willing to go to in order to please her boss?

14. What did you think of the Fiveash family?

15. Is there a good balance between the romance and the descriptions of magic/witchcraft?
Magic Strikes (1 new)

186083 Once again we have a focus on a different mythology. In this case, it is Hindu myth. Did this contribute to the overall story or does it feel more like an information dump?

We learn many new things about Saimon in this book. What did you think of his character in the beginning of Magic Strikes? Did your opinion of him change throughout the book? If so, when and why?

The Midnight Games, a gladiator style tournament, plays a significant role in the story. What did you think of the concept of the games and the fact that Kate had participated in something similar as a child?

More information is revealed about Kate's adopted father, Voran. What did you think of him and his relationship with Kate?

Kate and Derrick still seem to share a connection even though there is no longer a blood bond between them. What did you think of Kate's reaction to Derrick's various "issues" in the story?

Kate's relationship with Jim is also put to the test in Magic Strikes. Jim is evasive and doesn't seem to trust Kate until she calls him on it. What did you think of this and how things were ultimately resolved?

Andrea and Raphael seem to be experiencing an "interesting" courtship. What do you think of their actions toward one another and their potential as a couple?

Julie is having problems at her new school and crazy Aunt Kate goes to her rescue. What did you think of Julie's problems and Kate's solution?

Jim, Doolittle and Kate want to protect Curran from the knowledge of what happened to Derrick. Was this the right decision? What does it say about these characters?

Kate and Curran seem to be taking their relationship to the next level. Did you enjoy their interactions and the direction things are going in?

More details are provided about Kate and Roland, and the origins of Kate's powers. Where you satisfied by the explanations or do you have more questions than you had before?

Kate makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect her friends. What did you think of her decision and its aftermath?

186083 My Answers

I love the Celtic mythology and believe it's presented more accurately here than other books I've read involving Morrigan. And, it was more comprehensively woven into the story.

I was on the fence about Bran initially but grew to like him and was saddened when he died. That may have been more because Kate started to see him as a friend and she keeps losing those who become close or befriend her. I wasn't really surprised when I learned his true identity as there seemed to be something tragic about him.

Re Harry...and his complete name! I definitely think the blood is not only revealing but can make her vulnerable in some way.
I agree with all you've discussed and BW, I'd love that kind of confrontation:)

I'm in the camp of her continuing to hold out. We know that he's a ladies man, used to having anyone he wants and then moves on. The longer she holds out, the more interested he will become and get to know who she is, falling for her as a person. Otherwise, she's just another notch that was a little bit of a challenge. I'm loving the dynamic:)

This was a favorite for me, too. I was actually caught off guard at first by Kate's devotion to Julie. It helped me to understand Kate better through their relationship and for that reason thought it was very important to the storyline. Julie will end up grounding her, giving her some sense of purpose.
