Crystal Cove (1 new)

186083 Crystal Cove

1. In the previous installments, the magic was far more subtle than in Crystal Cove where it comes to the fore. The book has a much stronger PNR vibe. Did you enjoy this or would you have preferred the lighter touch of magic realism?

2. Jason is described as "a man without a soul". Did you originally think the author meant this literally or figuratively? What did you think of the way this aspect of his character was portrayed?

3. Justine in a natural born witch but seems to have rejected her heritage and has no control over her powers. What did you think of this?

4. Did you enjoy the romance between Jason and Justine? Was it easy to identify with them emotionally?

5. Kleypas diverges from her usual path with the sex scenes. Were they over the top or did they work with Jason and Justine's characters?

6. Some readers have compared Jason to Harry Rutledge from the Hathaways series. Do you see the similarities or is this way off base?

7. Did anyone else keep recalling the plot of Practical Magic (Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman) while reading about the Witch's Bane?

8. Justine's mother, Marigold, placed a spell on her daughter to prevent her from falling in love. Sage and Rosemary believed it was done out of love but Justine is convinced her mother did it to control her. What do you think?

9. Marigold is presented as a bitter, cold woman who is willing to allow her daughter to die in order to teach her a lesson. Do you think Marigold was always this way or did her life experiences make her like this?

10. Sage and Rosemary fulfill the mothering role that Justine is lacking from her own mother. What did you think of them and their relationship with Justine?

11. What did you think of the way the Witch's Bane is resolved? Do you believe in Soul Mates?

12. Jason's initial interest in Justine stems from wanting to get his hands on the grimoire. He eventually "borrows" the book. What did you think of his motivation and his actions?

13. Priscilla is very dedicated to her job. What did you think of her character and the lengths she was willing to go to in order to please her boss?

14. What did you think of the Fiveash family?

15. Is there a good balance between the romance and the descriptions of magic/witchcraft?
Magic Strikes (1 new)

186083 Once again we have a focus on a different mythology. In this case, it is Hindu myth. Did this contribute to the overall story or does it feel more like an information dump?

We learn many new things about Saimon in this book. What did you think of his character in the beginning of Magic Strikes? Did your opinion of him change throughout the book? If so, when and why?

The Midnight Games, a gladiator style tournament, plays a significant role in the story. What did you think of the concept of the games and the fact that Kate had participated in something similar as a child?

More information is revealed about Kate's adopted father, Voran. What did you think of him and his relationship with Kate?

Kate and Derrick still seem to share a connection even though there is no longer a blood bond between them. What did you think of Kate's reaction to Derrick's various "issues" in the story?

Kate's relationship with Jim is also put to the test in Magic Strikes. Jim is evasive and doesn't seem to trust Kate until she calls him on it. What did you think of this and how things were ultimately resolved?

Andrea and Raphael seem to be experiencing an "interesting" courtship. What do you think of their actions toward one another and their potential as a couple?

Julie is having problems at her new school and crazy Aunt Kate goes to her rescue. What did you think of Julie's problems and Kate's solution?

Jim, Doolittle and Kate want to protect Curran from the knowledge of what happened to Derrick. Was this the right decision? What does it say about these characters?

Kate and Curran seem to be taking their relationship to the next level. Did you enjoy their interactions and the direction things are going in?

More details are provided about Kate and Roland, and the origins of Kate's powers. Where you satisfied by the explanations or do you have more questions than you had before?

Kate makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect her friends. What did you think of her decision and its aftermath?

186083 My Answers

I love the Celtic mythology and believe it's presented more accurately here than other books I've read involving Morrigan. And, it was more comprehensively woven into the story.

I was on the fence about Bran initially but grew to like him and was saddened when he died. That may have been more because Kate started to see him as a friend and she keeps losing those who become close or befriend her. I wasn't really surprised when I learned his true identity as there seemed to be something tragic about him.

Re Harry...and his complete name! I definitely think the blood is not only revealing but can make her vulnerable in some way.
I agree with all you've discussed and BW, I'd love that kind of confrontation:)

I'm in the camp of her continuing to hold out. We know that he's a ladies man, used to having anyone he wants and then moves on. The longer she holds out, the more interested he will become and get to know who she is, falling for her as a person. Otherwise, she's just another notch that was a little bit of a challenge. I'm loving the dynamic:)

This was a favorite for me, too. I was actually caught off guard at first by Kate's devotion to Julie. It helped me to understand Kate better through their relationship and for that reason thought it was very important to the storyline. Julie will end up grounding her, giving her some sense of purpose.

186083 1. Magic Burns contains numerous references to Celtic mythology. What did you think of this theme? Is it confusing or does it contribute to the mystery?

Kate finds herself in pursuit of the archer who stole the pack's maps (and also killed her bounty). What did you think of Bran's character? Were you surprised to learn his true identity and his ultimate fate?

More details are revealed about Kate's past, particularly her mother's death. What did you think of the revelations? Are there things you want to know more about?

Kate and Curran have an interesting love/hate dynamic. What do you think of the direction their relationship is taking?

Kate finds herself caring for a young girl. What did you think of Julie and Kate's feelings of responsibility toward her?

There are numerous forces at work in this book and each has their own agenda. What did you think of the various groups (i.e., Bran and Morrigan, Morfran and the Formoreans, the Oracle, Red)?

What did you think of the twist regarding Andrea's character?

What did you think of the conflict between Bran and Curran?

186083 In the prologue, it becomes clear that Curran has stood Kate up for their naked dinner. Was Kate's response appropriate or an overreaction?

When Kate and Curran confront each other of the naked dinner debacle, neither seems willing to accept the other's explanation. Did you feel that they were justified in their assumption? Did you suspect that someone may be working behind the scenes to keep them apart?

Kate ultimately decides that she wants Curran and initiates the mating dance by breaking into his rooms at the Keep. What did you think of this and Curran's inevitable retaliation?

It seems that Saimon is up to his old tricks again with Kate. What did you think of his blatant attempts at humiliating Curran - were his reasons justified? Was this a wise decision on his part?

Some reviewers have commented that while they enjoyed the development of Curran and Kate's romance, they felt that it came at the expense the Erra plot, which was not as tight as compared to the stories in previous books. Do you agree with this assessment or was there an appropriate balance between the romance and the storyline?

Just when you though Kate's personal life couldn't get any weirder, her crazy aunt Erra arrives to throw a spanner into the works. What did you think of Erra's character and the motivation for her attacks on Atlanta?

It turns out that Kate has a guardian angel (Naima the shapeshifting crocodile). What did you think of her character and the fact that she was hired by Hugh D'Ambray to protect Kate? Do you agree with Kate's assessment of Hugh's agenda or do you think something else may be motivating his actions?

Kate and Curran have an intense heart to heart about their family histories. What did you think of the scene and the revelations?

One of the significant themes in this book is what makes someone human. Saiman believes that a person's humanity is self-defined while Ted views the Shapeshifters as inhuman and believes they should be exterminated. What do you think of the different points of view and the way they are presented in the story?

What do you think of the racism and discrimination within the Order and the different ways Kate and Andrea respond to it?

Andrea and Raphael have a falling out over Andrea's loyalty to the Order. Was he out of line or do you think he had a legitimate gripe?

Kate and Andrea seem to be at odds at the end of the book, at least, Andrea seems to be AWOL after the battle. What do you think is going on here?

When Curran is lying in a coma, the pack debates Kate's role as the alpha female. What did you think of the various clans (Cats, Boudas, Wolves, Rats, Jackals, Nimble, Heavy), their attitudes and the politics within the pack?

Kate's special brand of diplomacy is shown to full affect at the Council Meeting. Did she handle this correctly or was it a mistake to kill the Jackal alphas?

When he awakens, Curran views the actions of the pack against Kate as a personal betrayal. Do you agree with this?

What did you think of Curran's "gift" in the epilogue? Do you think Kate and Curran will be able to work out their control issues?
