Could it be “The City of Ember,” by Jeanne DuPrau? It’s dystopian, definitely middle school/high school. People living underground after a disaster, and a few eventually realize they can go outside again. (There was also a movie in the early 2000s.)

Also, the words you mentioned reminded me vaguely of the book, “When I Am an Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple.” Edited by Sandra Martz. It contains a poem of the same name, as well as other poetry & prose. That’s probably not it, but I thought I’d mention it.

Just an idea:If you google ‘find poems by lines’ there are some free websites that help locate the titles & some give the full verses.
Not sure if your missing dedication might be from a poem, but maybe it’s worth a shot?
It worked for me, when I was looking for something for my stepfather’s funeral, and couldn’t remember the exact lines.

PS- In The Last Starfighter, the main character does board a ship holding many different races of aliens.

Maybe...The Last Starfighter, by Alan Dean Foster, was from the 80s, but reprinted in the 90s. I haven’t read the book yet, I’ve only seen the movie. Just now realized that there *is* a book, so thanks!
It fits some of your comments: a boy goes to space with aliens, and has a translator for languages. In the movie, a teen boy beats a battle-the-aliens “video game,” (old style physical game machine, like pinball), and “wins” a trip to space, or more accurately, is drafted to join the aliens’ space war. There are no Earthling buddies who join him, though. A doppelgänger takes his place on Earth. It was a combination of scifi/action/humor.
I hope this helps!

Could it be a book from “The Long Earth” series by Terry Pratchett? There are five in the series so far, and they involve a man who has the rare ability travel through other dimensions (the multiverse theory) -other versions of Earth.Book one is “The Long Earth.” (The only one I’ve read so far, I think.) I do seem to remember an element of him being pursued.

: ) I had so many of those 45 books-on-record when I was a kiddo. No idea what happened to them.Just a suggestion: if you can’t find it in this group, or through any book site, people list things like this as “collectibles” on etsy and pinterest.
You might come across it there, and, even if you don’t want to buy it, at least you’d know the title. Good luck!

Glad that you found a few, if not the one you remember. : ) The Tasha Tudor books might have some of the same crafts you remember (corn dollies, etc). I just tried searching under “traditional crafts” and a lot of titles came up. Maybe give that a shot? Or “traditional crafts for children...”

I don’t *think* that this was a YA series. It was more likely a stand-alone fantasy for adults, or possibly the first in a series. It might have been urban fantasy.I think the main character (who has the wing problem) appeared to be in her twenties- but could have been much older/immortal.

Watercolors maybe, or other paints; possibly computer graphics? Very detailed illustrations. Bold/bright colors. Lots of scenes in the night sky, of the flying ship & surrounding areas, above & below.
Adele, thank you! For Anasazi World the cover looks promising; not sure if it’s the book, but I’ll give it a try. I’m adding the second book, too. : )
There was a story anthology series, edited by Andre Norton, called CatFantastic. There were five books in the series (CatFantastic I, II, III, IV, and V). They contained stories all based somehow on cats, in the fantasy genre. I only read one or two of the books, and that was a very long time ago... but they might be worth looking into?
Could it maybe be something by Juliet Marillier? I have only read a couple of hers, but many of her books are supposedly based on Celtic mythology. Just a guess...
