175537 Beautifully done story, J.F.--one of your best, imo, and your best are very, very good.
175537 Ice rescue technician? Sounds daring, dangerous and adventurous, Jot!
175537 Agreed, J.F. and Tom. Carter wasn't perfect, but a very long, long step up from what were slugging it out in this most recent election. And I was just reading a book "Confronting the Bomb" on the history of people's movements against the developments, from 1945 to the '00's, against nuclear bombs and nuclear war; it goes into some detail re the risktaking and actions of both Carter and Gorbachev in stopping near-horror/near-disasters in the early-mid '90s. ---Actually, reading the optimism of the book, written several years ago, is, n light of the past few years' direction/s, depressing (I presume some of you here have read either Ellsberg's The Doomsday Machine or the more recent book by Annie Jacobsen, Nuclear War: A Scenario.
175537 And a good New Year to you too, Jot. And to all of you here!
175537 Thanks, J.F. I rebooted the router and this worked. THANK YOU.
(On the other hand, a couple of other things have, recent weeks, worked and then, the next week or so, something else or same thing not worked, so I've no idea whether something more basic wrong ...or not. But again, thank you.
175537 I've written one but am having enormous rounds of trouble with my provider (Verizon) or wifi-windows interface--what's wrong changes each time I or karma/serendipity fixes it--so am not sure when/if I can get this in. If any of you know serious net-connection guru leads (or *good* net provider network), please let me know--thanks. (I think you folks must know someone, if anyone does.)
175537 Seriously good story, Greg.
175537 Interesting story, Tom. Maybe build it out more, certainly into a full-length story, maybe even into a novella/novel.
175537 I hope your home--and your family--are all right, Jot.
175537 Thank you so much for sharing this info with us, J.F. !
175537 Jot wrote: "Not sure what you mean. I'm guessing it is an advertisement banner you are seeing?"
Yes, it is, Jot. It's no big problem, anyhow. (Tonight's is a big banner for a Koontz novel across the page top, takes up 20 or 25percent of the page, is all.) See Greg's comment, below, and my reply there.
175537 Agreed, Greg. I've had to deal with that on a couple of sites I use for edit-jobs information. No, the one on this group's site is just a high-up banner on the opening/landing page and not terrible.Greg wrote: "If you go to the group (before selecting a discussion) it appears above the Microstory Contest banner. I just scrolled past it and didn't notice. At least it is not like a mapping tool I use where ..."
175537 Not sure where to post this, but . . . is Goodreads now requiring the posting of those ugly ad banners at the top of groups' pages/sections? They detract, and insistently.

175537 Good work, Jot--both the story and in keeping this site and competition going so well for so many ! You should be very, very proud of both.
175537 Tom: yw; or you had in view some other meaning for that signifier, lol?
175537 Jot wrote: "Situational morality? Hmm"
---In philosophy, it's ethics that allows for varying one's answer/s to ethical conundrums (say, for instance, "Is it acceptable to bomb civilians in an enemy nation?") in accord with the circumstances/facts/scope/characters of the particular situation. One might answer, for instance, "Maybe try offering terms, or even an ultimatum, first?" or, for example, "Only if you know that enemy will otherwise do severe harm [or even: at least as severe harm] to you" or other qualifying/delimiting phrase/conditions.-- The answer, that is, requires having knowledge of the situation and taking the situation (plus one's more general universe of ethics answers) into account in answering the etchics question.
---Since you asked.---
175537 A real "sounds just like what happened when we had to" tech classic, Tom. And strongly paced. Give it a final polish-edit and send it off to the biggies.
175537 Well-crafted, well-detailed, finely paced piece, Greg. Congratulations!
Justin, what a beautifully honed and original tale, and fine characterization! Congratulations to you.

175537 Such a terrific story, Justin! First rate!
