(view spoiler)[I am just so speechless! This was a re-read for me but I used both audio and my hardcover book. I think the audio enhanced my enjoyment of the book but it was a 5-star rating both reads! I just felt TRUE heartache and learned some things about the war that I didn't even know. I think it's disgusting how the government lied (and still does?) to the citizens about something like that. There might be some things they need to be kept private, but not when it's just to cover their own butts! (hide spoiler)]

Through Ch. 25

(view spoiler)[I repeat what's been said in the book: What is wrong with the world???!!! I can still (sadly) say that today regarding too many aspects of it.

I felt AWFUL for Frank coming back and being SO mistreated! My gosh, she SAVED liives! She wasn't over the killing women, infants, children, Vietnam soldiers. I don't see how people could spit on ANYONE let alone someone like her who only want to do something that fulfilled her, served her country, and (she thought) would make her parents proud. For THEM to treat her how they did, especially her father, that was the worst!

And now she's lost Rye too. What else can that poor girl go through? Just so, so sad!

I think she is a heroine for doing nothing else other than holding the hand of a dying person. Being there on someone's deathbed is NOT easy!!! I think Frank is an angel! (hide spoiler)]

Through Ch. 17

(view spoiler)[Yeah, I was so sad that Jamie died. He was an important man in the Army, saving so many lives. Leaving a little one behind with no father.

I think Coyote was a nice break, but I'm also not sure if they'll be good together if they stay together afterwards. I am wondering if he really broke off his engagement. I hope so. I (to this day) can't understand how people can mistreat people who served our country. Especially back then during the Vietnam War when they were sending SO many "boys" over there. I worry that if they do stay together even though they'll know/understand how the other feels, I'm not so sure if they (especially Coyote) can be there for each other if either or both comes back with PSTD which is most likely.

I am glad that Frank found her calling and that while it's a horrible job having to see so much pain and death, she's good at her job and I'm happy that she feels fulfilled by it. (hide spoiler)]

Through Ch. 10

(view spoiler)[Dang! This book is SO hard to read! I lived during this time (in 1996 I was 16) and I so remember all of it...the flag-burning, the bra-burning, the protests, etc. But I wasn't so much into my world and what everything meant. I just thought those things were stupid. Anyway...

Frankie was in for a rude awakening. I couldn't believe that her brother was killed and they were notified just as she and her mom were talking. She hadn't even left for Vietnam yet. I wonder if the Army really had more lax rules for RN's going to Vietnam. I think the 2 year experience rule was better. Jeez, I don't think anyone can imagine what they'll really see and go through. ALL of it is heartbreaking but the scene with the little girl in her dead mother's arms tore me up!

Now Jamie is severely injured and she's SO into him. I can see why someone would step out on their partner (even though I disagree) when they're feeling so alone and worlds away from affection, but I'm glad they didn't have sex. I hope Dr. Rob can fix him but I don't have high hopes. (hide spoiler)]

Stopped at The Heart of the Matter

(view spoiler)[I don't know what to say about this book. I have the hard copy but I've been listening to the audiobook and I think I've lost a lot. I love how the chapters are song titles. I learned what Deep Cuts are. I couldn't figure out what "cutting" had to do with the book and its theme. lol But I finally figured it out. There's just SO much information overload to me. I don't know I guess I'll see how I feel by time it ends. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I am conflicted. I do like how she and Joe met and how their relationship is going. Zoe is clued in to how Joe feels and how Percy really feels too. It's cute how she is so clueless. I like both of their characters, Zoe and Percy. (hide spoiler)]

Through Part 5

(view spoiler)[OMG I love how smart and intuitive Ana is! The clues she gave Din were so spot on and logical in a weird way. lol

I loved Malo in this book and how well Din and Ana complemented each other. I'm looking forward to book 3 for sure! (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[So weird and yet cool how Ana can taste where things have been. lol I would love that ability to make my eating more interesting. lol (hide spoiler)]

Through Part 2

(view spoiler)[ I hadn't given much thought to that smile of Ana's that Alaina mentioned, but I have to agree when I think about it. Almost wicked. lol And the experiments were insane! I wasn't expecting anything of what I got but I loved it all, even the craziness of it. I just love her and Din's relationship. (hide spoiler)]

Through Part 1

(view spoiler)[I don't know why but when I read about heads or heads rolling and those types of things in books it makes me laugh and think it's silly. In a movie though, it's creepy and I can't look. Anyway, I sure as heck wasn't expecting anything like that.

I'm done with the book as noted previously but going to try to make some brief comments as my left hand is still not 100% but it is better, thankfully! (hide spoiler)]

I had x-rays and labs done to rule out things like lupus and gout and some others that I can't recall. It appears that I have osteoarthritis that is exacerbated by such things as gripping (holding books, iPhone to read an ebook, etc.). I am better but not 100% yet. At least I am able to type with both hands as of today but I'm not going to push it! Thanks for your concern. :)

(view spoiler)[I loved this too! I love good metaphors, and there was also idioms and one thing I also love, personification. The rumor, for example, dropping them off on a dirt road. All so fun.

I was surprised that Hana had originally planned to turn Kei over to the Shiikuin. I'm glad they found each other in the end too. :) (hide spoiler)]

Part 3 / 340 pages

OMG! The soulless children...how horrible that would be. Burying then alive...Ugh! And Kei being pulled into the ground "by a flurry of hands." Jeez, the creep factor. Then she tries digging him out by clawing at the ground and SHE gets pulled in. FREAKY! Just awful!

Part 2 / 180 pages

(view spoiler)[I agree. I just love the whole thing. I love both of their innocence about the other's life/world. I was cracking up when she told him they had to sleep in the same bed to get to her grandmother's place. lol And the scene about dating. She had no clue about what it was and that was just too cute. Innocent too. I loved it. Then their kiss. lol Oh my gosh. She gave that first kiss. I love the writing and the beauty of the writing itself as well as the way she describes her world to him as she shows him, but it's hard for her to visualize his world. (hide spoiler)]
