Chapters 45 - end (view spoiler)[ The Contest ended as expected but with a much more dramatic conclusion than I expected. I shiver to think what Celaeron is going to be asked to do in the next four years.
I am not a fan of love triangles but this was handled well with the 2 men remaining friends throughout. Both have good points but the Prince still has some growing into a man to do. Chaol now has a tortured mind to deal with having made his first killing. It will be interesting to see them both develop.

Chapters 34 - 44 (view spoiler)[ Well, we've discovered the human connection to the beasts and I had figured that out.

Nehemia has revealed some of her hidden secrets to Celaeron and I hadn't figured that out but wasn't surprised.

And we also found out why Queen Elena kept appearing to Celaeron and saw a gory battle between the beast and Celaeron.

So mainly we have the final battle for the King's Champion and a confrontation with the King. Off to the climax. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 24 - 33 (view spoiler)[More contestants are dying and it seems there is some kind of assistance being given maybe human.

Celaeron has visited an ancient crypt and met the spirit of a half fae Queen Elena. The clock tower seems to be a portal that Elena fears will be opened to terrible beasts. Elena needs Celaeron to win the contest to become the King's Champion and then to save the world from the beasts but she doesn't explain how. This is becoming more otherworldly.

The Prince is drawn to Celaeron but she has a hidden anger towards his family and I think it is going to be tied to her heritage when she opens herself to her early childhood.

Rebels from Princess Nehemia's country have been massacred. I hope that she doesn't become a tragedy in this story. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 15 - 23 (view spoiler)[ The tests have been going on for a time and there are a few different ways contestants have left or been eliminated but the unforeseen method is the brutal mauling of 2 of the contestants. They seem like beast attacks but no one has figured out what is happening. I can't guess what it is.
The Prince is walking a fine line while King is away. He at time seems sympathetic toward innocent victims of his father's reign but also not sympathetic to rebels or those beneath him. Clearly someone to stay wary of at this point.
Interested in finding out how Celaeron was betrayed and ended up at salt mines. (hide spoiler)]
