154805 I haven't had time to get to it at all. I had, stupidly, at the start of the year made a lot of commitments on that Woman's group, and I haven't even gotten to participate in half of my commitments there. Seems I was a bit too enthusiastic when signing up - oops!
154805 Just checking if anybody would notice. ;) Shall I make the scope for this thread a bit longer?
154805 @ Cecily, Amy and everyone: Oh good - okay, so if we do IOAWN in November, when would you people want to do Invis. Cities?

Okay, mark the book as "to read" or "reading" as the case may be, then you will see, if you refresh, you will have a "review" even if there's nothing written in the review space. Then go "edit review" - and down towards the bottom you will see something like "more options" that you can click on, open that and you will see a box "who recommended it to me".
As you type the person's name, a green suggestion should come up underneath. Make sure you type it exactly like the suggestion.

If you did it correctly, when you click "save" right at the bottom, your suggestion will go green indicating that it is now a link. If you did not type exactly the same as the suggestion or something went wrong, the name will show in black- in other words, not a link. You may need to experiment a bit to get that process just right. :)

Have fun!

154805 Good catch on the potential progression of the log, Cecily. However, I do think he probably felt more stressed and doomed right at the start when he was still wounded and totally unsure whether he would make it for another day, let another until he finally got rescued, than after he thought of his potato-growing trick, and realized that he might actually have a chance.

Three cheers for Derek's post 21! See, I told you all that reading the book first spoils the movie for you....

Will comment more later. PC repairs almost done...

Well, there's one for now, here https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
, but I just somehow know you haven't even looked at it yet, so there could be as many as you want there to be, with the proviso that you need to comment in each preceding one. ;)
154805 For some reason my mind also went to Mars bars when I read the above comments! :D
154805 Provisional schedule here https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... , but it hasn't been updated to include all the ghost stories. Let me just get to a more comfortable keyboard and I will try to fix things up. :P
154805 Oops, have I messed up? Ack, my bad! Long ago, we thought of doing Invisible Cities, but more recently people said they'd rather be interested in If on a Winter's Night, and we already voted on it. It just shows you what a bad time I've been having with computer systems going belly up on me again... sorry, i will fix that - if you guys also want to do Invisible Cities, shall we vote on it again, or are you okay with If on a Winter's Night first, and IC later?

Heh, many of those are quite good! Poor old Obama...

Personally, I'd prefer an hour traveling through countryside than a city, the latter tends to be more boring and often frustrating - depending where you are and how you travel...

Carmilla, yaye! I suggest starting off here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
since there's also a nice link to dld the novella, and lots of vampiric background to vampires in general.

154805 Though I love history, I personally never liked biography, found them boring; but when literary groups interact, a lot of fun and games ensue - I found those interactions intriguing.

In fact, I'm starting to wonder if we shouldn't add a biography section to the group.... :P:P:P:P

Fun! Almost more so than fiction is.

Absolutely, and you can even get it for free! What a prize, huh?

154805 I've become interested in the Polidori novel now, after reading in some of your interesting links that his Vampire was based on Lord Byron, Amy!

A Brief History of Vampires"

Yep, doesn't my link work for you?
154805 Thanks for all the research and background that you're adding, Amy!

Mmmmm..... Interesting 'incident' that she experienced as a child already. I wonder how that fit in with events of later on. Let me continue and see...

154805 In the next thread, Amy mentioned that Styria is close to Transylvania, an area in the central part of Romania which is of course by now, famous for it's vampires. ;) (kidding)

But seriously, even though it is true that Vlad Tepes was very cruel - and there is no doubt in my mind that the "vampire" mythology did spring up around him - I can't help wondering why he was specifically linked to vampires as such.

If only I had more time, this would be the perfect opportunity to finally read A Brief History of Vampires that I had been given as a birthday gift long ago.
154805 What a nice excuse for an outing, Ruth! ..and now you can momentarily set The Martian aside and quickly do Carmilla - it's indeed very short and can be quickly completed - I've just simply had no time to read because I have serious PC issues to try and sort out currently....
