154447 I was researching them today and found this, people may be interested to know.

It is certainly an expensive investment, but if it pays off it as is mentioned then that would be grand.

154447 Christine is right.

In Canada you need to use the ones from the government anyways (I think)! They are free, but you have to send them a copy of your book.

It makes me smile that somewhere in the grand Canadian archive there is a copy of my book. They asked for it!

154447 Design is a funny thing. One of 'those' things actually, much like Writing in fact. Everyone and their mom's dog says that they can write a book, but as you know by now, writing is hard work and Mr. Wiggles couldn't actually write his book and see it through to the end, despite his best barks saying otherwise. Design is the same way. Maybe you can, maybe you can't. There is only one way to find out!

Give it a try!

Here is the first step to that.

Sketch!

No computers allowed. Computers make you 'technical' and that isn't the brain meat you want working! So sketch ideas, look at other covers in your genre, and sketch more ideas. Sketch like 100 rough ideas, then sketch 100 more, take your favourites, maybe 6 or so, and refine them, then refine them again, then again! Show them to friends, revised them, show them to others, and the finally bring them here and show those six ideas to us.

If sketching doesn't work out, then you will know right quick if you can handle the rest of the design process or not.

There is no shame if you can't btw! :D
Even though Mr. Wiggles couldn't write a book, his Quiche is to DIE for!

154447 Well dang son. That is lookin' tight!

It is hard to read the blurb. That is my advice to consider. The trees are too white compared to the text, and I am having a hard time reading it, especially in paragraph starting with 'and then there'. Perhaps a darkening of the trees would be useful. :)

Yes I quite like my 'slashie'. "I'm a professional graphic designer / purveyor of Elfrotica. Gets them to double take every single time.

154447 Fiction is magic, unicorns can prove it.

Unicorns are real - not because in a magical forest somewhere a unicorn is standing next to an apple tree, but because people know what unicorns are.

Even if unicorns are not real, fiction makes them real. Even if they are pretend, we know what they are, which makes them exist. We all know what a unicorn is, even if we have never seen one, we know they are real.

Fiction is a special thing. It can make unicorns exist. Fiction is magic.

It depends on if the copyright was allowed to dissolve or not by the holder / the current owner of the copyright. Age doesn't necessarily mean something is public domain, you would still need to check. :)

154447 Zoltán wrote: "- If you just quote a line or two (like 'She softly sang "Tralalala..." while rummaging across the heap.'), then you have a good chance that it will be within fair use."

This is not what fair use is, in fact, I am afraid that is pretty much the textbook definition of unfair use. So please, don't ever do that.

Fair use would cover someone who say is a music critic, and in their review of a band's live show they said "My favourite part of their show was when they sang Tralalalala and the crowd joined in!" This is covered because they are reviewing a piece of music, and that line is part of what is being critiqued.
