154447 GUYS! It's already released! Now go get it and find out Who Wrote Alice Hatter

154447 I'm sad to see the "Only Darker" title go, but the title should definitely reflect the story you've written, not the one you thought you were writing.

That being said, I like "Writing Alice Hatter".

154447 Touché. Now, where did I put that delete posts sword?
Aug 28, 2016 03:43PM

154447 Grrr. Not sure if I should blame posting from the phone or just blame you (can't be my fault). Ok, I decided, it's your fault, Christina. Don't try to deny it or I'll tell Mom.

154447 But, it's not written in third person! I has to be written in third person!!

Oh, wait, you're thumbing your nose at the rules, aren't you? Well played.

Also, I agree, you should make the quote easier to read.

154447 Suuuure it didn't, Christina

154447 Zzzz ... Zzzz ...

Kidding! It does lack the funny and original that is present in the works of yours that I've read, but it is well written and damn impressive.

154447 This question has been asked and discussed many times. Check the link below that has my reply from the last time someone asked as well as links to additional threads.

154447 First off, you really should start your own thread so this one doesn't get derailed.

With that said, the cover of my first book was darker than it looked on the screen, so I lightened it myself, resubmitted the cover, and it looked like I wanted it. Createspace isn't going to change the settings on your cover to lighten it, they're just going to print the files they receive. You wouldn't expect them to go in and change typos for you, would you?

I'm not sure how you got your cover, but you'll need to lighten it yourself and resubmit.

154447 There are several good threads in here where this has been discussed. I'll (briefly) give my own opinion and then link a few of the threads that should give you a lot to consider.

Price depends on a lot of factors, but two that are most important to me are genre and length. A novel works well at $2.99 and novellas are better at $0.99. I have a hard time buying anything over $3.99, especially if it's someone I've not read before.

Check these out for a much more thorough discussion.

154447 Typically after I've sent my book out to beta readers, then I start to think seriously about the cover.

154447 Last thing I'm gonna say on this topic. If I notice whether or not a book has author/book title headers then I'm not enjoying the narrative, and may not even finish reading it.
Mar 10, 2016 05:48PM

154447 And I have to make a comment about Christina's post! I have a lot of Stephen King novels and all the ones I checked had the author name/book title headers. But that doesn't mean I'm going to start using them!

154447 Ah, sorry! Again, I went and looked at my paperbacks for reference. Most of them did have author on one page and book title on the other. BUT there were discrepancies between them where some were centered, some left justified, and some right justified. The fact that I had to look though means I never noticed.

In my own book the only thing I used were page numbers. That's it. And no complaints.

154447 I meant to comment on this when you posted about it last time, but, well, I got distracted. Anyway, your question about headers got me curious, so I looked at some of my paper books. For the ones that started a new chapter on a new page, they did indeed leave off the page number. However, the fact that I had to physically look to see that should tell you that it didn't make a bit of difference to me while I was reading it.

For my own book, I put page numbers on every page starting at chapter one and ending at "the end", and no one has said a word about it. I take that back, my kids complained that the page number should be at the bottom center instead of the top corner. I told them they are weird.

Bottom line: do what looks good to you and causes the least amount of headaches. Most of your readers will likely not even notice.

154447 I spent about ten years (off and on) writing my first novel, which I did not publish. Then about five years on the second (also not published), and around two years on the third, which I did decide to self-publish.

How about the rest of you? How long did it take you to put "THE END" on that first book? And did you publish it?

154447 I think you're doing yourself a great disservice if you allow a single review to question your writing choices. Dropping the reader in the middle of things is a stylistic choice, as is opening with an info-dump. Neither is right or wrong, and you'll find fans of both approaches. Personally, I don't mind being thrown into the middle of things. Then again, an info-dump done well can be a beautiful thing as well. Just write the book you'd like to read and you'll find fans.

154447 My crafty wife made a Christmas ornament with a floating image of my book cover inside and the published date on the back. Love it! I've posted it everywhere.

The Internet has ruined my brain. If I had just thought about this for more than five seconds I would have figured it out without Google's help. The capital "B" should have clued me in.
