I’m planning to read it! I bought it several years ago for my husband since he likes Zola. I watched the TV series which I really liked but haven’t read the book yet. I’ll see if I can start it this weekend.
I’m ~25% through War and Peace. This is my 3rd time in 5 years of starting it and this the farthest I’ve gotten! I’ve decided to not be concerned about completing reading challenges this year and focus on finishing some long books. I really like this one now that I’m past the Battle of Austerlitz. That part was a little tedious. I’m committed to finishing it! After this one, I have the 2nd half of the Count of Monte Cristo to finish.
Well, it was 88 degrees last week and today it’s snowing! I don’t think we’ve had snow (at my house) since October and only trace amounts of rain. I’m glad to finally see some precip!
Welcome to our newest members Audrey, Mannat, and Valona! So glad to have you in our group!Mannat - I second Rosemarie’s recommendation of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It’s one of my favorite books ever! Another American classic I recommend is Lonesome Dove.
Congrats Samantha! I’m thrilled for you! Keep us posted on how the job goes. It sounds really interesting to me!
Luís - Great! This is one book I feel very confident recommending! I recommended it to my husband and he also enjoyed it. I saw the 1981 mini-series way before reading the book and will always picture Cathy as the actress Jane Seymour!
God luck Samantha and the rest of you dealing with dangerous storms! Stay safe. I got to celebrate St Paddy’s day early, last night, enjoying a local Celtic band. It was great to get out & listen to music, and see some friends! I’m going to break out my flute this weekend and play some Irish tunes. I have this huge Irish song book. First, I have to find the book! 😂😂😂
I won my first GR giveaway since forever! I used to win them all the time and then nothing. Unfortunately, it’s not something I’m super interested in right now but I’ll still give it a try. It’s non-fiction - The Fate of the Day: The War for America, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston, 1777-1780 by Rick Atkinson. I read a history book last year about the time frame leading up to the Civil War, which was surprisingly (for me) really interesting.
I also found a graphic novel Armed with Madness: The Surreal Leonora Carrington. I put that one on hold. A graphic novel about an artist makes sense to me! I’ve made it 40% through the short story collection. They’re strange also, no surprise. Lots of animals behaving as humans. I really like the narrator. I’m hearing some of the same themes/ideas as in The Hearing Trumpet. One of my favorite lines in The Hearing Trumpet was at the beginning when Marian is wondering what type of physical exercise they will be doing at the Institute and she’s concerned that it might be ice hockey. I thought that was hilarious! It’s such a bizarre idea for women in their 90s living in Mexico to be playing hockey. It did make me think about how we don’t always try to understand what concerns, rational or not, that an elderly person may have about doing something. The more I’m thinking about the book, the more I like it. I haven’t written down any thought yet since I’m still processing. Maybe tomorrow!
Book Nerd - I found The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington on audiobook on Hoopla. It’s only 4.5 hrs. I’m going to give it a try. I also found an autobiography (in Spanish) Una vida surrealista by Joanna Moorhead which I’m going to try to read. She sounds like a fascinating person!
I finished it late last night. I’m going to try to write a review today. That was a very weird book. Every time I thought it couldn’t get any weirder, it did. But, I did enjoy it! l‘ll comment more later. I’m going to have to go back through it and take some notes and read some reviews.
