I’m listening to Animal Farm.

Thank you John for the encouraging words! I know I can use some right now.

Luís - Great! This is one book I feel very confident recommending! I recommended it to my husband and he also enjoyed it. I saw the 1981 mini-series way before reading the book and will always picture Cathy as the actress Jane Seymour!

Mari8Ami - I loved East of Eden, too! Grapes of Wrath is also good but very depressing.

God luck Samantha and the rest of you dealing with dangerous storms! Stay safe.
I got to celebrate St Paddy’s day early, last night, enjoying a local Celtic band. It was great to get out & listen to music, and see some friends! I’m going to break out my flute this weekend and play some Irish tunes. I have this huge Irish song book. First, I have to find the book! 😂😂😂

Welcome to the group Sunny and Jakob!

Karin - That’s wonderful news about your brother! ❤️

Rosemarie- Thanks! I decided to start reading it tonight. II’s actually pretty good.

So glad you found our group Sylvia! Welcome!

I won my first GR giveaway since forever! I used to win them all the time and then nothing. Unfortunately, it’s not something I’m super interested in right now but I’ll still give it a try. It’s non-fiction - The Fate of the Day: The War for America, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston, 1777-1780 by Rick Atkinson. I read a history book last year about the time frame leading up to the Civil War, which was surprisingly (for me) really interesting.

I also found a graphic novel Armed with Madness: The Surreal Leonora Carrington. I put that one on hold. A graphic novel about an artist makes sense to me! I’ve made it 40% through the short story collection. They’re strange also, no surprise. Lots of animals behaving as humans. I really like the narrator. I’m hearing some of the same themes/ideas as in The Hearing Trumpet.
One of my favorite lines in The Hearing Trumpet was at the beginning when Marian is wondering what type of physical exercise they will be doing at the Institute and she’s concerned that it might be ice hockey. I thought that was hilarious! It’s such a bizarre idea for women in their 90s living in Mexico to be playing hockey. It did make me think about how we don’t always try to understand what concerns, rational or not, that an elderly person may have about doing something. The more I’m thinking about the book, the more I like it. I haven’t written down any thought yet since I’m still processing. Maybe tomorrow!

Book Nerd - I found The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington on audiobook on Hoopla. It’s only 4.5 hrs. I’m going to give it a try. I also found an autobiography (in Spanish) Una vida surrealista by Joanna Moorhead which I’m going to try to read. She sounds like a fascinating person!

I finished it late last night. I’m going to try to write a review today. That was a very weird book. Every time I thought it couldn’t get any weirder, it did. But, I did enjoy it! l‘ll comment more later. I’m going to have to go back through it and take some notes and read some reviews.

Leona - I got to experience the fun dust storm (sometimes referred to as a haboob) here in Albuquerque. It was pretty bad, but worse east and south of us! We had 60 mph gusts. Almost no visibility. The mountains completely “disappeared”. I-10 in southern NM was shut down. East of me, on the other side of the mountain, they turned off the electricity for several hours for fear of forest fires starting (like in CA). I don’t think that’s ever been done here before! Fortunately, nice weather returns tomorrow!

I saw a book on display at the library today, which I checked out. The Real Jane Austen: A Life in Small Things by Paula Byrne. Has anyone read it?

I went for a Sandia Mountain hike yesterday morning with my 2 brothers. It was the first hike I’ve done in awhile! It was a beautiful morning with fantastic clouds (which made for great pictures!) I think the trail is likely snow covered today. No snow at my house, just rain. We are very thankful for any precip right now. Hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

Welcome Talah, Milja, and Ben! I hope you all find some great classics to read and discuss with the group.

I have the same edition Kathy. I’m on page 33 and am really enjoying the humor.

My husband and I went to the zoo on Friday. It was a beautiful day! I was in short sleeves and got a bit sunburnt on my face and arms. (It’s time to start wearing sunscreen again.) We saw something we have never seen before - the Komodo dragon coming out for her weekly walk with the zookeeper! It was very cool! This is the only animal they do that with and it was her first walk of the season, now that’s it’s warming up.
