Happy check-in! I'm so ready for the deep freeze to end here which it is supposed to do this weekend. It's been -30 to -40 with windchills this February, Sunday might be +4. Even had the power go out for a hour or two because a fuse in the back alley froze.
Two weeks of reading:
Deep End ⭐⭐⭐ (PS body of water)
This did make me laugh out loud but not one I'll reread.
Magic Slays Dramatized Adaption Magic Gifts Dramatized Adaption Magic Rises Dramatized Adaption ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Four more to go in the series.
The Forever Girl ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Reread.
The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (ATY author three names)
The Rose Bargain ⭐⭐⭐ (ATY plant in title)
Ya historical fantasy. I liked the bargains and twists but the characters were meh. I do want to read the end to the duology.
Fahrenheit 451 ⭐⭐ (PS banned book)
The answer to the question of the week.
Spy x Family, Vol. 13 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (ATY common household item)
Love this manga series.
The Devil You Know ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (ATY country song)
I liked revisiting the characters.
The Innkeeper Chronicles: Clean Sweep The Graphic Novel, Volume 2 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS space tourism)
The inns in this series host aliens from across space.
PS 11/50
ATY 16/52 Anniversary 1/10
Goodreads 34/200
QOTW:
Well Fahrenheit 451 comes to mind because I finally read it this week. I enjoyed the movie with Michael B. Jordan but I had no idea what was going on in this book. The idea of firefighters burning books, and people remembering books in protest was great, and some of the commentary on attention spans holds true. The rest made no sense and I probably would have dnfed if I hadn't seen the movie first.

Finished Reading:
Better Than Friends ⭐⭐ (ATY comfort read)
This barely had a plot but Shalvis' writing is comforting.
Magic Bleeds Dramatized Adaptation ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Mooncop ⭐⭐ (ATY published 2016)
Boring and sad comic.
Four: A Divergent Story Collection ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (ATY cityscape)
Finally got to this. I may switch this to dystopian with a happy ending if I don't find something.
The Wren in the Holly Library ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (ATY animal in title)
Great start to a duology, part two will be published this year.
Black Klansman: A Memoir ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS unlikely friends)
This audiobook was read by the author. This was still worth reading even though I had seen the movie first.
PS 8/50
ATY 12/52 Anniversary 1/10
Goodreads 32/250
QOTW:
No research. I often judge books by their covers and don't always read the synopsis.

Finished Reading:
Magic Strikes Dramatized Adaption ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Graphic Audio versions now count as books.
Occulted ⭐⭐⭐ (PS cult)
Graphic memoir about growing up in a cult. Very slow and then it ended.
Four Ruined Realms ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (ATY cover image starts with A,T,Y)
Loved this and I'm glad that I only have to wait until July for book three.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (ATY author got back to)
I borrowed the audiobook and was able to stay focused on this.
Half a Soul ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS ai chatbox recommend)
I used the main page of goodreads until it recommended something that looked good to read. This read like Bridgerton books but a little slow to start.
PS 7/50
ATY 9/52 Anniversary 1/10
Goodreads 27/250
QOTW:
Just on goodreads, but authors aren't really active on here.

I wonder if they don’t show up unless you set a goal for the year.

I read two graphic audio productions this week that have been removed from Goodreads for not following their requirements. (Magic Bites and Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews) It's very confusing because I read through the list of reasons why they remove things and it doesn't seem to apply. Other graphic audio books by the same author but from a different series have not been removed. I found it quite funny that their rules if applied should remove all Audible originals because they require a subscription to access. I read the graphic audio from the library like most of the books I read.
Finished Reading:
Magic Bites & Magic Burns ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This series is dystopian but has happy enough endings for anyone struggling with that prompt.
Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (ATY two books with a connection different genres book one)
This works for many prompts on the PS and ATY challenges. The main character was born without a left hand. I'm using this book because I figure I can find a book with turtles for the connection.
Iron Flame ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This series fits many prompts between PS and ATY as well. Rereading this, I realized how much I had forgotten.
Pearl Volume 3 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Great series and I hope they create more. I don't have a bucket list but for those who want a tattoo this series would work.
Audacity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS forgotten woman in history)
I loved this! Thank you to the person in this group for posting about it last year in check-in.
PS 5/50
ATY 6/52 1/10
Goodreads 22/200
QOTW:
Less than 3 stars rating from Popsugar and an author you haven't read in awhile from ATY. Last year I revisited a lot of authors that I hadn't in years.

Finished Reading:
Ice Guy & Cool Girl, Vol. 2 ⭐⭐⭐
The Son of Neptune ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS neurodivergent author)
This one had a food truck. It's funny how you don't notice things until there is a prompt.
Fourth Wing ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rereads don't count for prompts, so naturally this book fits many. I'm looking forward to book three being published on Tuesday.
PS 4/50
ATY 5/52 1/10
Goodreads 16/200
QOTW:
It bothers me when the title doesn't fit, or when there is one sentence to make it work.
@Nadine I'm not bothered by land beside water being a beach, but I am annoyed with the book cover for Book Lovers where there are two people in a boat????

I hope all in the difficult weather areas of the states are safe.
Finished Reading:
Pearl ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS same name book one)
Great graphic novel about being Japense/Hawiian in Japan during Hiroshima.
Blackmoore ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (ATY manor)
This started to drag a little at the end and not be as happy a book as I was looking for. I prefer Edenbrooke.
She Followed the Moon Back to Herself ⭐⭐⭐ (ATY poetry)
The Ice Guy and the Cool Girl, Vol. 1 ⭐⭐⭐ (ATY 4 members not family)
Cute manga.
The Lost Hero ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (ATY breakfast club)
Glad to knock off a prompt I dislike with a great book. This is the start to the next Percy Jackson series.
A Business Proposal, Vol. 7 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Only three more volumes to be translated.
Pearl, Vol. 2 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Great story and artwork. This series would work for the cult prompt. It's too early in the year to allow myself more than one comic from a series for prompts.
Lady Susan ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS classic I've never read)
Had I realized that this was epistolary, I would have read it much sooner. Lady Susan is quite the character, and wonderfully different from Austen's other characters.
PS 3/50
ATY 5/52 Anniversary 1/10
Goodreads 12/200
QOTW:
I create a shelf for the year of mostly new publications but a few others that I want to accomplish. 2024 has 10 left that I didn't get to.

Pearl, Vol. 1 comic collection following a tattoo artist/hitwoman for the yakuza (two other volumes)
There are lots of other books too.

It's been an emotional rollercoaster this last week of 2024 so reading took a backseat.
Finished Reading:
Galatea ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Re-read
Kingdom of Sea and Stone ⭐⭐⭐
YA fantasy sequel. This duology didn't have insta love so much as insta friendship which was weird.
A Business Proposal, Vol. 6 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Kdrama
Pearl, Vol. 1 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (PS same title book two)
So I found many books called Pearl that looked interesting to read. This comic series is about a tattoo artist who also is a Yakuza hitman.
QOTW:
I finished most of my challenges. I exceeded my published before I was born goal, but I was two books short of my read book in my house goal.
PS 50/50
ATY 52/52 ATY Summer 36/36
ATY rejects 10/11 (I just couldn't push myself through The Night Tiger)
DBC 34/36 (This was just to see how diverse my reading was without trying)
I'm good with what I didn't finish because I was very close. For 2025 I just need to pick prompt/goal books a titch more than reading whatever I feel like so I don't have to push myself at the end of the year.

I've made peace with my last couple of extra goals not being met by the end of the year. Now I'm just reading whatever calls to me.
Finished Reading:
The Games Gods Play ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Greek mythology following a woman cursed by Zeus. Chosen one for a Hunger Games situation. The duology ender is published next year.
Mr. Villain's Day Off 05 ⭐⭐⭐
Cake Wrecks: When Professional Cakes Go Hilariously Wrong & Wreck the Halls: Cake Wrecks Gets "Festive" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Re-reads to cheer up.
Portrait of a Scotsman ⭐⭐⭐⭐
A good series to read for prompts next year. This book's main character is left-handed. Book one or two deals with a politician.
Monstress, Volume 9: The Possessed ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wow the Goodreads search engine cannot find this book for the link easily. This series is still so good.
QOTW:
I don't really have anything picked this year. Onyx Storm isn't published until the 22nd so everything else is killing time.
