143739 The winner of our poll for November is Tomorrowland by Joseph Bates. This is a volume of unusual short stories, so feel free to skip around if you aren't feeling a particular story.

Also, this book is available in Metro's collection of always available e-books. To find it, visit metrolibrary.org, click on downloads and streaming, then under eBooks and Audiobooks, click on Always Available eBooks. You may have to make an account in order to download the book, or you can just read it as an e Pub file. These books don't show up in the same place as the regular e Books you may have checked out before.

143739 Hello!
Metropolitan Library System now has a selection of always available ebooks. You can download and read these titles without having to place a hold if one is being read by another library member. Here's the link:

143739 Whoa! I don't know how I missed that--I think I must have been paying more attention to some other parts of the story.

143739 Playing catch up! I know there have been a few titles that I wasn't able to finish in a timely fashion, so I'm sure there are some of you who are in the same boat. Also you may have joined more recently and would like to investigate some of the books we read long ago. All the discussion boards are still open, and you can feel free to post in any of them. To see what we've read make sure to look at the Bookshelf section for any that may catch your eye.

If you've finished Nature of the Beast this is the perfect time to dig back into our archives and see what you may have missed.

143739 I think so, probably.

143739 I've been listening to the audiobook, because I have a million other books I want to read as well. It's read by one of the actors from Downton Abbey and he has a very distinctive voice. I won't get too far into the plot at this point but it really spirals out into some surprising areas.

One thing though--I cannot concentrate on audiobooks! I don't know why but I find my mind wandering no matter how good the reader is.

143739 Here's a question from the FAQs on the author's website:

Is it important to read the books in order?

Well, it's not essential. Each book is written to be self-standing, and most newcomers to the series have no difficulty picking up on issues that are explored in more depth in past books. Indeed, it's vital to me that readers know the characters have pasts, and the particular book they're reading is part of a continuum - a glimpse at their lives at that moment. If anything from the past is important, I'll explain it. Otherwise, some issues are alluded to, but only as a means of showing the characters have lives.

Having said that, there is a strong, and growing, character development arc throughout the books. I think of the books as having
two streams - one is the plot - the crime. The other is the personal life of the characters. The first will, for the most part, be
contained in a single book. The character development, though, gets deeper and deeper across the series.

The short answer? It's not necessary to read previous books - but it is recommended.

143739 Don't worry about feeling behind, just go at your own pace. I've read the first few pages--there are a lot of characters to keep straight at this point.

143739 I'm pretty sure it's one of those series that you don't have to read in order.

143739 Talk about it here!

143739 Well it looks like our winner is The Nature of the Beast by Louise Penny! Enjoy!
Aug 12, 2016 08:16AM

143739 We've read a couple of Gillian Flynn books already, I think Dark Places and Sharp Objects.

143739 I like the author too, and she seems like she sees through some of the weird things the adults around her are doing.

143739 I'm a couple chapters in, and I can't help but think...why didn't they use birth control? There are a lot of options and it would have saved the family a lot of grief.
