139735 MOD Clarification

Team Dystopian Developers has notified me of an error when calculating their salary, and are correcting that, so the $$ earned in message 101 will be inaccurate. Please ignore this if you notice the discrepancy.

Thank you!

139735 I'm waiting on that one from the library as well Jax. If you want a thread for that one, let me know, and we can do it.

I didn't usually read horror either, but I'm making an effort to be spooky this month lol.

Oct 5–11 | Shirley Jackson

🕯 Haunted houses. Uneasy families. That creeping dread when the ordinary tips into the uncanny. This week we’re stepping into the world of Shirley Jackson — where even a summer lottery can turn sinister.

👉 Come add your voice (if you dare): Which book gave you that "everything looks normal, but I’m uneasy" feeling?

139735 🕯 Haunted Homes & Unsettled Hearts | October 5–11 | Shirley Jackson
(The Haunting of Hill House, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, The Lottery and Other Stories, Hangsaman, The Sundial)

If October had a patron saint of dread, it would be Shirley Jackson. 👻 Her work is unsettling not because of gore or jump scares, but because she knows how to slip under your skin: the eerie house that might be alive, the small town with unspoken violence simmering just under the surface, the fragile mind teetering on the edge.

Jackson’s stories live in the uncanny space between the familiar and the sinister — everyday settings, but twisted just enough that you start to question what’s real and what’s imagined.

💬 This Week’s Universal Question
Even if you’ve never read Jackson: what book (any genre) gave you that "everything feels normal but I’m uneasy" vibe?

🔥 Hot Take
The Lottery isn’t really about tradition — it’s about how quickly we normalize horror when it’s convenient. Agree or fight me.

🕺 Casting Chaos
Netflix green-lights a Hill House reboot (again). Who’s your dream cast — or would you rather see We Have Always Lived in the Castle adapted next?

Nostalgia Prompt
Do you remember the first time you encountered Shirley Jackson (high school English? stumbling across the Netflix Haunting of Hill House series? a random short story in an anthology)? Did it hook you right away, or confuse you?

🎲 Mini-Game: One Word Chain
Drop one word to describe Jackson’s vibe. (Next commenter adds another word, building a spooky "word cloud" together. Example: "claustrophobic → sinister → gothic → uncanny…")

Yes, collect a salary if you pass a salary space on your current turn. If you're at the last subway terminal, on your next turn you will begin your turn on the START HERE space, and will be able to collect a salary again (if you desire).
