128924 No June title--I thought you'd might want to suggest something since you've been away for a little bit!

I don't have any but the basic TV service now, so I've not seen the things you mention. I tell myself I need to expand my TV choices, but don't seem to be getting around to it.

I'm not sure what MSW is...

128924 I have the old and much of the new Fr. Brown series. I've watched this one of the old version (not sure if the new one did this story...) It was hard at first to see where it was going, but all is explained in the end!

128924 Father Brown knows everyone and every thing! I assumed there was nothing wrong as well, but the psychology of what Fr. Brown says was interesting.

128924 Actually, I think I ignored it. But now I'm looking it up.

128924 I thought the philosophical back and forth between Brown and Flambeau towards the end was a bit too much. Though it did enlighten Fr Brown, I doubt many of the readers understood it.

128924 The Flambeau in the current TV series isn't a bit physically like the Flambeau in the stories!

128924 I think this might be one of the first Fr Brown stories, given that he is present but not identified early in the story. It is clever!

I think Valentin does appear in other stories, though not a ton, to my recollection. Flambeau does appear a lot of times, though, and he does sort of change his criminal ways, if that is not too much of a spoiler.

128924 So glad you'll be back! Any requests for June to welcome you?

128924 Father Brown does travel a bit but is in England mostly. This just was a story where he wasn't.

I know there is a TV version of this story in the 1974 series which I have and which I'll try to watch today. There might be one in the current series as well, but I'm not sure.

Though I've read this before, I'll have to finish the story before I can comment further!

128924 I suggest The Blue Cross and The Eye of Apollo.
May 05, 2020 03:58AM

128924 I'll look up two more and let you know!

128924 Father Brown sounds good. As I said they are all short stories, so any of them will work for me. One a week? And thanks for hosting.

128924 Did we all get the mystery collection from Kindle? If so, we have a lot of choices. I like the idea of some short stories. Here are a few suggestions:

Sherlock Holmes: There are four novels but 56 short stories in the collection. Perhaps some of those?

Any Father Brown fans? I think the whole collection is in Kindle and they are all short stories.

R. Austin Freeman wrote the Dr. Thorndyke stories which are very old but quite tricky.

Open to other thoughts as well.

128924 What happened to us? I hope you are all all right!
Apr 26, 2020 03:44AM

128924 I have a lot of them as well. Including the Sherlock Holmes ones. If any of you want to host, then pick a title and I'll probably be able to get it, especially the classic mysteries!

128924 NicoleG: No I didn't. I didn't hear of it or otherwise I would have ordered it.

Of course, I have all of Christie, plus Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio Marsh. Most of the Cadfaels, the Diva series, Nero Wolfe, Patricia Wentworth (Miss Silver), The Cat-Who series. A lot of others which are escaping my memory right now.

128924 There is a bit of talk at the end about upcoming parties to plan...

128924 Glad you are doing well, though I expect to be hunkered down for a while longer.

I think I mentioned that I've been teaching classes for a life-long learning group here in Pittsburgh, on mystery books. Corona put a stop to in-person classes, but starting in the summer, I will be doing my Golden Age Mystery class via Zoom. Registration for the summer just started and the class is already full with six people on the wait list!

Given that we can't get library books, perhaps we could consider something we already have in our stashes for discussion.

128924 So how is everyone? The page has been quite for a few days and we haven't heard from Tina.

I hope everyone is OK
128924 The sergeant seems really bad. I've not read further since yesterday but hope to finish soon.
