Goodreads 2020 Reading Challenge: my target is to read 60 books
Total books read so far: 15

Jan 13, 2020 05:25AM

118012 Last year, I had an amazing reading year – discovered new books and got around to some books I’ve been meaning to read but hesitated.

This year, I’m continuing my trek on myths and old stories, along with art but now heading towards human history and philosophy. To help me get there I’ll also read contemporary and classic fiction (including poetry and plays). Mostly, the contemporary will be modern retellings and fiction set around the World Wars. Some of the classics will be Jane Austen and Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

In the next few weeks I will list some of the books I will be reading in 2020 in messages 2 – 14, in the meantime, here’s a quick guide:

Message 2: Summary for months Jan 2020 – June 2020

118012 I hope to read sometime this month the world’s desire by Andrew Lang & H R Haggard. It's an inventive sequel of Homer's The Odyssey but I'm not sure if it counts as a historical fiction.

I'm currently reading this along with Hindu Myths A Sourcebook by Anonymous and The Letters of Vincent van Gogh by Vincent van Gogh

The latter I am reading 2 editions simultaneously, the second one has all VG's letters, I've just realised how many all means. This is the longest book I've read, I'm now giving myself to the end of the year to finish it.

118012 Hi, I’m pencilling in to read the below in the remainder of the year.
If it appeals feel free to join me. Thanks.

In first half of July The Barretts of Wimpole Street play based on life of Elizabeth Barrett Browning
In second half of July Sonnets From the Portuguese

July - the odyssey Walter Shewring (Translator)
Sept - the odyssey translation Emily Wilson
Nov - Ulysses the short version

update
I've just realised it's not obvious I don't mind if you read different versions / translations of Odyssey or Joyce's Ulysses.

118012 The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #2) by Douglas Adams kind of different to the first one, I found it less funny but quirky

Oh wow, that sounds like fun! I don't know that I've ever read a script before, but this was a funny movie!"

It was very funny.
And Dreadfully Ever After sounds way more fun than Anna Karenina (one I've been meaning to read - some time soonish-ish). Did you get to the end of it?

Stephen Fry has the voice to bring out the comedy in Hitchhiker's. I read the first one last year, and am planning to read the rest, well this year-ish :)
