I don’t read a lot of series but there are a few I’d like to finish and some I plan to start.

Short stories

I’m currently reading Fifth Business and should finish it this month. I think that will be it for this list. Books #1 and 10-13 will be carried over to next year. I did knock off a few books that I own so I’m happy with that progress!

Well, it doesn’t look like I will read the rest of these books this year but will have to push them off to next year, except for the one I DNF’d. They are still on a priority list but my library book club reads and library holds are taking a priority right now. Note to self- Do not put any more library books on hold for the rest of this year.

My plans for the rest of the year:
1) I have 1 prompt (author from Canada, NZ, or Australia) left for a 52 book challenge in a different GR group. I’m struggling with what to read even though I have lots of choices. I may go with Fifth Business by Canadian author Robertson Davies. I think it’s on one of my 12+4 challenges.
2) Nov and Dec sci-fi book club reads - Yiddish Policeman’s Union and Paper Menagerie and Other Stories. Paper Menagerie is a reread so I may not read all of it. It’s one of my favorite books so I’m looking forward to rereading some of the stories.
3) I have a A-Z title challenge that I’m almost done with but that’s my last priority, if I can work something in.
4) I have ambitious plans to read a long Latin American classic, Conversation in the Cathedral by Mario Vargas Llosa. I may not get to it until December.
5) I’ve been doing a lot of 2025 planning this month and just need to stop planning and get back to reading!

Jennifer - I’m trying!! Plus, I’ve had the book for years and just need to read it or dispose of it.

I will commit to The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon since it’s our library sci-fi book club read and I suggested it.

I’m reading An African in Greenland by Tété-Michel Koomassie to finish up a 52 book challenge in another group. It’s really good (very interesting customs and well-written) and the first book I’ve read which is set in Greenland and also in Togo, first 2 chapters.

I thought We Solve Murders was really good! It’s a fun read with lots of action and travel. I enjoyed it even more than the Thursday Murder Club books. Although, I do plan to read the 3rd & 4th books in that series.

I will commit to reading
We Solve Murders, the first book in Richard Osman's new series.

I’m finishing up Carrie by Stephen King. It’s a group read in another GR group. It’s King’s first novel.

I finished Grey Bees and loved it! I went back to the bookstore where I bought it and bought the other book they had by Andrey Kurkov and The Gates of Europe: A History of Ukraine by Serhii Plokhy, both of which I plan to read next year.

Jackie and Lea - That’s exactly what happens to me and, to compound the problem, I keep putting library books on hold. I do better if I start a book as soon as I buy it. I’m trying to read books I own so I can then sell them and buy more books with my credit! I know. It makes no sense. Right now, I’m happy if I read one book per month that I own.

I like this idea for a challenge! I might do something like it (maybe books that are not novels) in 2025. I’m curious what plays you might read. That’s a tough one for me. Essays are also.

Why am I surprised that of the 7 library books on my list, I've read 6 of them and am starting the 7th?! Maybe 2025 will be the year I finally read books I own.

I'm getting ready to start
The President by
Miguel Ángel Asturias for a group read in another group. I'm also starting a personal challenge (with no time frame) to read 30 Nobel Prize winning authors. This will be my first one for that challenge.
I think I still have time to finish this challenge! This book will be #7.

I will commit to read my newest purchase (yesterday),
Grey Bees by Ukrainian author
Andrey Kurkov. It’s set in eastern Ukraine, the Grey Zone. I feel like this is a good way to express my solidarity with Ukraine. It’s set in a war zone but before Putin’s latest invasion. I’ve read one other book, Death and the Penguin, by this author and enjoyed it.

I’m going to commit to a 2nd book, another non-fiction, this month: Cue the Sun!: The Invention of Reality TV by Emily Nussbaum. I heard about it on the Bookcase podcast this past week.

I finished my selection- A Zoo in my Luggage. It was really good and I plan to read some more books by this author, Gerald Durrell. Since it’s non-fiction, I will also add it to the non-fiction challenge thread.

Thanks Alondra! In December I’m always so ambitious for the next year and then I start reading all kinds of other stuff. I am currently reading one book, The Secret History, from this list. There are at least 3 that I still plan to read.
