Great! You don't have to sign up with one book, it's just that whoever reads the maximum pages wins. But the books should all be Correta Scott King Award winners.
I started reading this a few days ago, and I am almost halfway through the book ( I read too slow). The message it gives is really, really important in today's world. As we all know, the BLM movement, upon which this book is based on, returned to headlines last year due to the killing of George Floyd. These incidents keep happening again and again. That's why books like The Hate U Give are so important. They change our perspective and educate us towards equality and justice.
I would also like to point out that the book is not at all sermonising. It doesn't preach. It just shows you what's happpening and leaves you to form your own opinion about it.
Some white people have got offended by it, but I think that's the beauty of this book. It shows that racism is not just limited to white people hating on the black. The hate goes both ways. White people started it, but the blacks too want their revenge, and that's why they go hating on white people. It's totally normal to have feelings of revenge when you have been wronged for so long. There's no point in getting offended by it.
The Hate U Give has been chosen as our second BOTM for February. We have chosen this because February is black history month. Discussions for this book will be held here.
I am the discussion leader.
Hi! February, as we know is Black History Month. Keeping that in mind, we are conducting a one-week black history month readathon lasting from Feb 21 to Feb 28. For the readthon, you are supposed to read books that have won the Correta Scott King Award. The award, which is named after Martin Luther King Jr.'s wife, is given to the best portrayal of African American life in children's and teen's literature.
You can sign up here and feel free to ask the mods if you have any queries!
