1069810 I haven't. I think I read the novelization of the film when I was little, but I'm not counting that. I read the Little Princess by Burnett and really liked it.

1069810 Books in the public domain are easy to find online.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Mark Twain
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss
Jane Austen
The Bronte Sisters
The Monk by Matthew Lewis Gregory

Or if there's a book on the Overdrive that's more contemporary that catches your attention.

1069810 You bring up really good points and I agree. I felt a little disappointed as far as the ending went. I am curious about what happens next, but the ending didn't feel...what's the word...cohesive? Believable? It felt rushed and out of place.
I didn't care for Lee's character; I didn't feel too bad when he got shot because his character was so flat. You do bring up a good point, though; maybe he'll have more depth to him now that he's been reborn with flaws.
And why didn't she just wish Maggie back if she's so capable? She could just wish up a new Maggie, but would it be the same Maggie? Maybe she didn't wish her back then because she wasn't aware of her powers and really thought there was no bringing her back, but now that she knows, what is the excuse that she can't bring Maggie back. Maybe if she does wish Maggie back, she'll be breaking the deal and Lee will die, again? But like you said, she's going to the spring to wish her back anyways so that's still breaking the deal. I don't get it.
I laughed, too about the door because I was thinking the same thing. You have all of these powerful creatures trying to break a door down and no one can do it? Hahaha! I don't buy it. That whole scene when she's fighting off George B. was there for character arc and drama.
If you aren't able to get a hold of the Night Circus we can hold off or pick a different book. Surprisingly, my town is shut down except for the library. I don't know what the logic is there, but whatever; I'm not going to complain. If there's a book you want to read instead and that you have easier access that's an option or we can also consider books in the public domain if you're into classics.

1069810 I have to admit, I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It isn't my absolute favorite thing in the world, but I wouldn't mind continuing on the series. In fact, I'm really wanting to know what happens to Lee now that he's stuck to the house forever and what Louisa discovers on her trip to the spring in Waterford. It's interesting that my first instinct of Mr. Morningside be the actual Devil was right; midway through the book, I doubted this, and then it ended up being true. Yet, he doesn't seem like the Devil that has been traditionally portrayed in media. I knew Mary had to be Maggie, but I wasn't expecting her to be an entity entirely created by Louisa. Looking back, it makes sense, though; there were even clues that I didn't realize were there until now. What did you think?

One thought I had was maybe he has Chijioke capture souls in birds and he keeps the birds because they give him power. I also really like Mr. Morningside and Louisa's interactions. Chijioke feels like more of a static, almost flat character, but I feel like he has a lot to offer. The realization that he is a Ferryman was a huge development with his character. I hope Louisa will have more interactions with Chijioke as well.

1069810 I'm dying to know what Mr. Morningside is. Chijioke is a Ferryman, Poppy is a Wailing Bairn, not sure what Mary and Mrs. Haylam is. I'm starting to think Louisa is a changeling, but I'm not sure what that entails; does she have superpowers or what? I have a hunch that Lee is not all that innocent. Maybe, in the end, there'll be this huge plot twist and Lee is actually the worst human being alive (a bit of a hyperbole, but you get the idea). I'm just very suspicious of Lee; maybe he has something to do with the Lost Order (pg. 254) or maybe Mr. Morningside has something to do with the Lost Order. And how the heck is Mary related to Maggie?!

1069810 This is a very late response, but I did read your comment when you posted it. I'm mulling over a few different ideas for our April book so I'm flipping around through our past discussions. Due to COVID-19 panic, everything is shut down here, but my campus library and the public library are still open though I believe they have reduced hours and its a grab and go no loitering type of deal.
I have a dark fascination with murderers; mostly, I'm interested in their upbringings and what's going on in their brains. In many cases, serial killers can be linked to crappy parenting and/or brain injuries. I think that's really interesting that your mom's brother has firsthand experience with Dahmer and his personality during adolescence. I always assumed that Dahmer was quiet but not shy. Shyness implies a certain social phobia I guess you could say. It would make sense that a serial killer wouldn't be adept at handling social situations and yet psychopaths are known for being charismatic. John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy were notorious for being charismatic. I think that's why Dahmer always interested me; he seems to function on his own different level. Anyways...I'm ranting. Thanks for sharing your story with me!

1069810 I have a feeling she has hidden powers as well. I didn’t know about fair folk lying. The protection circle scene was kind of lost on me :( but I’m glad you picked it.

1069810 Whew! What a week. I binge read half the chapters this afternoon and it was sweet! Have you noticed that the images that appear in between certain chapters have portraits of items/people that correlate with events that will happen in the following chapters? I think Louisa is dark fae and I’m convinced Mary is Maggie somehow someway. I don’t think Mr. Morningside is literally the devil like I originally though; my theory is that he was cursed, which is why his feet are backwards and he can’t really leave the basement/house. I am dying to know what is going on in the attic? Or is it the fourth floor? So many questions so little time.

That's awesome! That's amazing that you overcame some of your anxiety; that seems like a pretty big deal. I hope you can have your sister there with you. When you can pick out at least one familiar face in a crowd it offers some comfort. I really wish you all the luck. Do you know what you would like to major in?
The coronavirus didn't feel very real to me, but now that they are switching us to online classes and the school I work at may also switch to online, it all feels very real to me now. I'm in my mid-twenties and fairly healthy so I'm not concerned about my health and I'm not worried about my family members. However, the way some of the people around me are panicking is making me feel a lot of anxiety. I'm trying to remain calm, but that is really hard to do when my whole town is freaking out. My biggest worry is that someone will get hurt due to mass panic. I don't bring this up to make others worry; hopefully, I haven't worried anyone else. I'm just in this moment right now where the world feels like it's closing in. I think if we talk to each other about these things the world will open back up. Even as introverts it's important that we get external support and I really appreciate you being here.

1069810 As someone that works in education and is a student, my week has been crazy due to rising alarm over the coronavirus. My college has just announced that they are switching to online for the rest of the semester. I have noticed that people are under a great deal of stress right now. I personally believe that right now it is very important to maintain good physical and mental health to the best of our abilities. I wanted to reach out just to see how you were doing as well as create a space for anyone to talk freely about anything really. And if anyone is feeling stress, anxiety, depression, etc. over current events or in general you are by no means obligated to comment, just know that this group will be here for you if you need emotional support.

1069810 Ya, I'm not a fan of Lee. He seems like your typical pretty boy. Chijioke seems like he has a more reasonable character. Should there be a romantic relationship in this story, I like Chijioke more than Lee, but I also wonder about Mr. Morningside himself. He is described as being only a little bit older than Louisa. I don't know; there are so many questions at this point in the book that nothing feels certain. Although, I really do think there is a connection between Maggie and Mary; I don't think Louisa would have reacted the way she did when seeing Mary for there not to be something.

1069810 I have to be honest, I wasn't a fan when the book started out and was struggling to get through it, but as soon as they got to Coldthistle and Louisa met with everyone I started to get giddier. I really want to know what happens, especially if Mary is actually Maggie or if she's like a doppelganger or something. At the very beginning of the book, Louisa calls her boss the devil and I am curious if he is legitimately the devil.

1069810 Thanks! I've read two of yours also. I liked Bridge to Terebithia and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. I remember watching the movie Bridge to Terebithia with that one kid that plays Peeta in the Hunger Games. The movie wasn't my thing, but the book was good.

Books I've Read and Hated: A Separate Peace, The Jungle, All the Pretty Horses, Savage Desire

Genres I refuse to Read: There isn't a whole lot that I wouldn't read either because I like to explore new ideas. However, I tend to steer clear of more political genres. Reading political books are informational (as long as they're based in facts), but aren't my idea of relaxing. I used to read YA a lot in high school, but kind of grew out of it. I don't mind it, but I don't consume it the way I used to.

What are your top five books you've read?
What are your top three genres?
What books have you read that you've absolutely hated?
What genre(s) do you refuse to read?

1069810 The Dixie State Library posts a list of book recommendations from staff and students on their website. To encourage students to visit the library and check out books, they put your name into a drawing when you check out a book that is one this list. The more books you check out the more times your name goes into the drawing. The prize is lunch with the dean of the library and a textbook (up t0 $70) is purchased for you. I love this idea! And it also gives me ideas for my summer reading list.
