Rossandra White, a fourth generation South African, spent the first twenty-three years of her life in Zambia, where she had a baboon for a pet and learned to tell a log from a crocodile. She’s the author of the recently published novel, Monkey's Wedding, set in Zimbabwe, as well as the memoir, Loveyoubye: Holding Fast, Letting Go, And Then There's The Dog. She lives in Laguna Beach with her two Staffordshire Bull Terriers, with whom she fights for space in her bed. When she’s not writing, she's at the gym or hiking the hills behind her home in Laguna Beach. ...more

For me at least. Perhaps it was the intent with which I began. It wasn't a conscious decision. I just woke up one day with a compelling need to write a book. Sounds crazy, but there it was. What I didn't know was that I had a burning need to "take fuller possession of the reality of my life" (to quote Ted Hughes). Writing has done that for me. Through gathering and shaping words to the page, along with putting my heart and soul into it, I have a better idea of where I'm going.(less)

It’s About Time (don’t you think?)

It has been awhile, since I posted anything here, hasn’t it? Books written, published and sold, well, still selling, here and there. And then there’s my third novel, Mine Dances, sequel to Monkey’s Wedding, finished for the most part, but I’m going back through it. Holy moly! Who wrote that crap? Me. Way back before my memoir, Loveyoubye, which was actually the last book I wrote. There’s some famo

“For those who write memoirs, memory is not a mere recollection of facts; it is a ragbag we pick through, salvaging scraps to craft into literature. We take half-remembered events and stitch them together to form a larger story that will, we hope, resonate with others and help them make sense of their own”—Erika Schikel”

“Like writing, publishing is not easy. No endeavor worth pursuing is. Discomfort and fear are easy outs—and ultimately dead ends. They are responses to keep us locked in the role of victim. Empowerment is encapsulated in the written word. Writing about trauma is more than simply documenting experience—it’s about illuminating life on earth. It’s about transforming tragedy into art, and hoping that somehow that piece of art may help someone else who’s gone through something unbearable and who doesn’t yet see that there is truly a light at the end of the tunnel. . . . It’s about transcendence. It’s about where we go from here.” Tracy Strauss”
Rossandra White, Loveyoubye: Holding Fast, Letting Go, And Then There's The Dog

“Memoir writing draws on all aspects of who we are, body, mind and soul. We are challenged to dig deep, to remember, and once again inhabit the skin of who we were and what we have learned. Writing memoir is an act of testimony, witnessing, healing. When you write a memoir, you draw upon layers of your consciousness and discover your true nature, your essential self, and are transformed the process.” Linda Joy Meyer”

“Maybe, life is a kind of waking dream.
Maybe, it's a double-dream with a false awakening.
Maybe, the dream only becomes lucid and truly luminous given the fuller perspective of life after one's own wake.
Maybe, the pictures never stop.
Doesn't the existence of dreams and higher consciousness during the years of blackouts of a lifetime, whether longer or shorter, give us a valid premise to hope that another highly spiritual state may await our passing?”
David B. Lentz, For the Beauty of the Earth: A Novel
