When Rossandra White walks into her Laguna Beach home one day to find that her husband of twenty-five years has disappeared—leaving behind only a cryptic, hastily written note on the kitchen counter as an explanation—she knows he'll come back. It’s not the first time this has happened, and she trusts that their marriage, though tumultuous, will endure. But she soon learns ...more

Similar to author Rossandra White, I spent my childhood in South Africa and now live in Southern California. Again, similarly dogs play a central role in my life. It did not surprise me that it was the bonding relationship between these incompatible humans and their dogs that I found to be the most emotionally moving (yes, I actually sobbed!). Yes, there are those perplexing Mars versus Venus issues that plague so many well-intended love-matches; where the man is non-verbal and withdrawn and the ...more

Someone once told me that releasing a first book is akin to hanging one’s soul on a meat hook in a display window for all to see (something like that), and I had to admit that was a pretty good assessment. So when I first received Rossandra White’s debut work, Loveyoubye: Holding Fast, Letting Go, and Then There’s the Dog, I remember thinking it was rather brave of an indie author to release a memoir as her first book.

But White carries her own in this fantastic tale that opens to the morning rhy

This is an entertaining memoir by Rossandra White. It is an easy and quick read. The book opens with a note from her husband, which simply says "Gone to Mexico. Adios." This is the second time he has just up and disappeared without so much as a word. Her marriage is on the rocks, her mentally and physically disabled brother--who lives in South Africa--is unwell, and so is her little dog. It seems her life is crumbling around her. She has to face her demons--sticking a band-aid over things just i ...more

When Rossandra White invited me into her world through her memoir, Love You Bye: Holding Fast, Letting Go and Then There's the Dog, I was quickly engrossed in the drama playing out in her southern California home. Surprisingly, I next found myself on the continent of Africa, exploring the many facets to her story. Not only does she tell the stories of her childhood vividly, she places that time in the historical context of apartheid and the changing politics of the places she lived.

Rossandra White is saying a kind of “Goodbye to all that” in a well-crafted account of life, love and loss. The book is beautifully written, painfully honest and achingly familiar, This is the best kind of non-fiction: written by someone capable of writing really good fiction.

There is ample and telling detail factual detail (she refers to her journal, which must have helped keep the memories sharp) dressed by a vivid imagination. When introducing two of her major characters, Jake and Sweetpea (h

This is a no holds barred memoir of the ending of a long time marriage; the devotion & diligence of staying connected to family who live far,far away; and as the author puts it: "and then there's the dog." Each of these life events could be a memoir unto themselves but as often happens in life, they occurred in concert. The beauty of the book is that White weaves these stories together in virtually seamless fashion, and the reader hangs into her words for the ride.

As someone who lived throu

Rossandra White tells her story simply, honestly, and lyrically. From the first page, she carried me along on her journey, not chronologically, but organically, as her then-present life resonated with the past. Usually, I would be impatient with a woman who stayed with a narcissistic man who lived his life without regard for his wife and family, but the author tells her husband's story with generosity and love, with sympathy and candor, and made this reader understand why she spent years trying ...more

Against the enchanting backdrop of Southern California and South Africa, Rossandra's marriage since twenty-five years dissolves despite her earnest efforts to save it. Honest and heartfelt, this book made me long for places I have not yet visited, to see for myself the rich foliage of South Africa: "purple gladioli as big as my fist; magenta, orange, and white bougainvillea blooms the size of teacups; and lawn on steroids, all of it seeming to grow as you watch." And the dogs! I have to get myse ...more

Compelling, revealing, tender and at times so insightful that I felt myself move through its pages. Rossanda White weaves a compassionate and insightful look at the tragedy of rejection as her marriage ends in divorce, and her committed devotion to her family, which includes the dogs that bind her with her free-spirited husband. At once poignant and amusing, it is the tale of strength with a glimpse into the complexity of blending roots from South Africa into the casual disengagement of life in ...more

When I finished Loveyoubye, I sat quietly with the book for a while. It deserved my respectful silence; a child had become a woman. The author's journey crisscrosses continents and emotional divides, traveling through the sorrows of love lost, love buried, love redefined. I was brought into her heartache with its tears and with its sweetness, through dialogue and descriptive writing that painted exotic scenes as well as imprisoned dreams. This is a beautifully written memoir, one that beckons a ...more

I really enjoyed this book! The author does a great job of talking about her life in a way that is really easy to relate to; so many times I saw myself when she was describing how she was feeling in different situations. It really is hard to let go, especially when the person you're trying to let go of keeps coming back (whether you like it or not). I also loved the way she described her relationship with her dogs; my boys are my babies and they've helped me through some pretty tough times. Than ...more

I received a copy of this book from the Good-Reads First-Reads program. I loved the story and everything about it. The woman's life certainly makes for a good book. Losing her husband and her dog to such a terrible illness. The author takes it all in stride and has amazing strength Loved this book Highly recommend.

For some odd reason I'm feeling ambivalent about the story. Perhaps the writing style isn't very attractive for me and tends to be more snappy than anything else.

I won this from goodreads firstreads.

“Like writing, publishing is not easy. No endeavor worth pursuing is. Discomfort and fear are easy outs—and ultimately dead ends. They are responses to keep us locked in the role of victim. Empowerment is encapsulated in the written word. Writing about trauma is more than simply documenting experience—it’s about illuminating life on earth. It’s about transforming tragedy into art, and hoping that somehow that piece of art may help someone else who’s gone through something unbearable and who doesn’t yet see that there is truly a light at the end of the tunnel. . . . It’s about transcendence. It’s about where we go from here.” Tracy Strauss” 3 likes
