[close] We are back with the next installment of the Difficult Reads Book Club (DRBC), this season featuring Virginia Woolf's St. Ives' Trilogy (Jacob's Room, To the Lighthouse, and The Waves). As many of you know, we've previously tackled Infinite Jest, Ulysses, and Gravity's Rainbow. Of course, these were all in preparation for a trio of the toughest selections of modern literature ever committed to paper. As before, our first meeting will be a brief discussion of the author's life and these books. We'll meet on September 25 at the Wild Detectives at 7:30 p.m. On that day, begin reading Jacob's Room--you need not have anything read before the first meeting. Because there are so many different editions of these books, I've divided up the reading by chapters and sections rather than pages. For that reason, the amount of reading may vary widely from week to week, but usually the reading is not over 100 pages (the second section of To the Lighthouse is only 20 pages in my book--a good week to catch up!). We will meet every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the table out front of the Wild Detectives. We are skipping the week of Thanksgiving so you can tell your relatives all about the rigors of reading Woolf in a group setting. Then, we'll return the following week for a discussion of the final section of The Waves and a Woolf Pack Party on Saturday December 7 at 3:30 p.m. As per usual, the party will be a costume party, so be prepared to wear your hair in a low bun and don a cardigan over a floral maxi dress (or get creative!). There will be awards for all finishers and a special award for best costume.
