[close] The Sydney Short Bookclub (formerly the Glebe Short Bookclub), was started on Meetup.com in 2015. For years we met nearly every two weeks at pubs around Glebe and Pyrmont. With the black swan that is Covid-19 we have decided to try out some online meetups till the world is a little safer. The digital format is brand new for us and we are still finding our way with this style of bookclub. Since inception, books have been <200 pages. That includes novellas, short stories, famous letters, poems, plays, and other texts. We avoid chick lit, romance, and mainstream books. We have covered a lot of classic texts from the Russian Greats to other literary greats such as Fitzgerald, Atwood, Steinbeck, LeGuin, Camus, Salinger, Voltaire, Seneca, Kafka, Woolf and many others. In 2018 we introduced the concept of DDs (dialectic discursions). DDs are topical discussions focussed on a particular issue. DDs usually have just one or two key texts, sometimes members suggest extra links but the key texts are the main focus of the conversation. We have also run special events such as philosophy lunches focussed on texts such as Sapiens by Harari, and ideas of DeBeauvoir, Sarte, and the Stoics. We know that online will not be as fun as in person, but with Covid setting in for at least several months and many people either self-isolating or social-distancing, we thought we should try and carry on.

[close] For all the book worms who need to prepare for university! Or just for those who want to read some more classics! We read novels, poetry, plays... the lot! There will be a new text every fortnight for you to devour and options will be posted in a poll before each new challenge. Prepare for some intense, but exciting reading!

[close] In this group we will be tackling the complete works of William Shakespeare, one play per month, in whatever order I can justify at the time. I'll be posting a general discussion, as well as a deep dive into a specific passage, for each play on my booktube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5qBKZan4C7SMcuy5VIPFMQ). [close] This book club is ONLY for books that are WRITTEN VERY WELL and have a GREAT STORY LINE. We ask that each member shelve at least 2 exceptional books that they've read but may shelve as many as they want. I spend a lot of time trying to find those EXCEPTIONAL books and have to wade through many poorly written books to find them. If you have this same problem then join our group and add to our group bookshelf ONLY the books you believe are EXCEPTIONAL. This group can encompass any genre of book, fiction or non fiction. As long as you believe that it is a book someone MUST read before they die. This group is not about getting a lot of members, it's about getting a lot of great books shelved on our bookshelf. That way when your feeling in a reading slump, you can come to this group and find an exceptional book listed on our bookshelf that you know will be written well and have a great story line to it. If you put a book on our bookshelf, please create a shelf for it so other people can easily pick out a book from the particular genre they like. Note to author's: You are all more than welcome to join our group but please do not shelve your own books. You probably wrote a great book but let others say its great. Please only shelve the books (other than yours) that you think are exceptional books.
