Books are registered on the site and then tracked as they travel from reader to reader through various methods of sharing.

The word "bookcrossing" (n. the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise) was added to the eleventh edition Concise Oxford English Dictionary in August 2004. The term was coined originally by Ron Hornbaker, when he created the BookCrossing site in 2001.
