Perhaps my mystery could be which cat of mine puked in the hall? I suppose something as ordinary as that could be twisted and built upon. If it weren't for that extra leap forward, I wouldn't have passed the window in time to see a stranger leaving my driveway. If I hadn't seen the stranger, I might not have made the connection between him and the phone call that came next, that would change the course of my life. (Anyone reading this, feel free to use this as a writing prompt exercise)(less)

Forget poetic prose and descriptions that immerse your reader. Focus on who is saying what, what bombshells are dropped, what revelations are exposed. Then when you revise, you can fill in the rest. For me, it keeps the story going. Some people might work things the other way around, and that's okay too. Don't force yourself to write like one of the greats, just blurt out the bare minimum because you'll go back and build on it.(less)
